Our August Tech Tuesday on the 25th will be the second part of our two-part series on accessibility for people with disabilities.
As mentioned at the June Meetup, this second evening of conversations will be focused on accessibility as it pertains to developing technologies, websites, apps, and more.
We’re lucky enough to be hearing from Megan Lawrence from Cognito again. (If you were here in June, she was the speaker who opened the evening talking about her experiences with her post-doctorate advisor who was blind.)
Megan’s specialty is accessibility and universal design. She will speaking on designing products, services, and technology for people with disabilities.
Our second speaker has yet to be confirmed. This event will be updated as soon as they are secured.
If you’re involved in product or technology development on any level, you'll definitely benefit from the knowledge and experience our presenters will be sharing.
As usual, doors open at 5:45pm and we’ll have pizza & sodas for you.
Presentation starts at 6:30pm.
We look forward to seeing you! |

Consider "The Open Source Writing Stack"

Open source makes writing and publishing much easier both online and in print — provided you know what tools to use. This talk covers those tools (from LaTeX to WordPress) and how to choose between them.
Open source tools for writing and publishing (both online and in print) continue to improve. This talk will blast through options for writing, publishing, and getting feedback — and discuss what you should care about when you’re writing. Does the GPL license on WordPress matter? What about a tool’s ability to handle Markdown? Perhaps most importantly, this talk will also cover when tools and stack questions can get in the way of actually writing.
*******************
Our speaker for this meetup is Thursday Bram, who writes about technical topics of all sorts. She’s the co-founder of Urgency Inc, a technical marketing agency.
Thursday gave this talk during the Open Source Bridge conference back in June.

PdxDevOps - Introduction To DevOps For Web Developers

Title
Introduction To DevOps For Web Developers - A description and demonstration, emphasizing Docker, including a Docker container deployment to Amazon Web Services.
TL;DR
A two-part presentation. 1) High-level introduction to DevOps what, why, and how. 2) A scripted sprint through the process of building a trivial web page, (along with its Apache HTTP server), into a Docker container, and then deploying that container to Amazon Web Services.
About This Presentation
A large number of Web applications companies are embracing strategies and techniques often referred to by the umbrella-term "DevOps". That number of companies will only grow. It is just a matter of time before you as a developer will be using those techniques, implementing those strategies. As a software developer, you need to be productive quickly when you join projects which use DevOps techniques. This presentation is a heads-up, a brief introduction to some of those techniques.
Deploying reliable Web applications and their updates, reliably and frequently, is a "hard problem". One strategy aimed at reducing the difficulty of deploying Web application software and its updates is named Microservices Architecture. Microservices Architecture is a strategy and analysis-design concept, not an implementation.
A software technology which lends itself well to implementing Microservices Architecture is "containers". There are many kinds of containers. Docker is one of the container technologies. But, Docker is not just a container, it is much more. When you understand HOW you can use Docker for project development, you will understand WHY many companies are now, or will be, using Docker.
The presentation is comprised of two parts. The first part is a very brief introduction to DevOps, Microservices Architecture, Docker, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
The second part is a live demo of how to use Docker to deploy a very simple PHP web app to AWS. We will go from "Zero to AWS" of a "Hello World" web page, live demonstrating the following:
* Install Docker on a Linux box
* Create a simple web app, (a "Hello World" website), consisting of one container
* Perform simple tests to verify its operation
* Deploy our "Hello World" website to an Amazon Web Services EC2 instance
* Perform a simple test of the AWS deploy
Intended Audience, Pre-requisites: The example web page uses trivial PHP code, but, the principles described and the demo are applicable to any programming language. Pre-requisites for understanding this presentation are knowledge of:
* Basic computer concepts, such as CPU, memory, and storage
* Basic Linux OS concepts and some common Bash commands
* Basic Web technology, networks fundamentals, and client-server concept
* Trivial HTML and PHP
About Rex Addiscentis

Demystifying test.check w/ Justin Holguin

Clojure's test.check library for generative testing is something that a lot of people talk about, but relatively few actually use. Lots of people, myself included, find that test.check's Haskell origins make it more than a bit alienating at first, and dealing with that unfamiliarity while adopting a new testing paradigm is a lot to ask.
In this short talk, I'll discuss ways of approaching generative testing in Clojure and show how generators are composed of small, simple parts. I'll also demonstrate my own library based on test.check, jen, which makes it even easier to write generators for typical Clojure data types.
Bio: Justin Holguín is a full-time Clojure developer at Puppet Labs who enjoys experimenting with new ways to write, find, and fix bugs. |

| description |
Sign up now, this event has a very limited number of spots!
Registration for this event includes all three workshop sessions. You can register for the event via <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/3d-modeling-and-printing-workshop-series-tickets-18089092964">Eventbrite</a>.
<b>Come to ChickTech’s 3D Printing workshop</b> to get the skills you need to start making 3D models on your own! For three Tuesday evenings in a row, you will be led by an experienced design instructor and focus on building a basic skill set for 3D printing design. Best of all, you'll get to print each session’s project in one of five plastic colors to keep!
Technology that will be used:
Autodesk Fusion360 and 3D Printers
<b>The Instructor: 3D printing designer Mazuir Ross (Maz)</b>
Maz sculpted the <a href="http://www.oregonlive.com/multimedia/index.ssf/2015/05/portland_3d_printing_meetup_gr.html">3D printed cow Veronin for Urban Farmer PDX</a>! To learn more about the designer check out her website at <a href="http://www.mazuirross.com/">mazuirross.com</a>. She is also in partnership with Attero, who focuses on the hardware side of 3D printing. You can find information about Maz and Attero’s operation at mazandattero.xyz.
<b>Session 1, August 25th: Make a Custom Charm</b>
The first session will overview the basics needed for successfully designing 3D printing output, particularly FFF/FDM printing. In the lesson we will create a snap-on custom charm for beer bottles/wine glasses. The creation of the snap-on charm will focus on basics of sketching and creating geometry from sketches. You'll be able to put a word or name on the charm, or even make flowers and/or geometric shapes!
<b>Session 2, September 1st: Make a Trinket Box</b>
The second session is about modeling a trinket box with a lid. The session will focus on the combining/subtracting and/or intersecting of geometry for modeling. We'll also focus on the concept of fitting tolerances needed for CAM/CNC fabrication, particularly 3D printing.
<b>Session 3 September 8th: Make a Six-Panel Hinged Cube with Custom Panel Design</b>
In the third session, you'll model a 6-panel hinged cube, including learning how to create fitted hinges. You'll also get creative with the custom designs on each panel. This folding cube can be designed with a sports team logo, a company name, anything you want. It can also be made into a desk trinket to hold pencils/pens/stylus just by cutting out a hole on the top panel.
------------------------------------
<b>By the end of this workshop series</b> you'll have a comprehensive understanding of 3D printing, 3D modeling software, and 3D design.
Part of ChickTech’s mission is to retain women in technology. We intend for this event to build community and add skills to resumes. We encourage anyone who has always wanted to get started with 3D Printing to register for this event!

Roll back
| description |
Sign up now, this event has a very limited number of spots!
Registration for this event includes all three workshop sessions. You can register for the event via <a href="https://www.eventbrite.com/e/3d-modeling-and-printing-workshop-series-tickets-18089092964">Eventbrite</a>
<b>Come to ChickTech’s 3D Printing workshop</b> to get the skills you need to start making 3D models on your own!

Random by Bart Massey
Roll back
| description |

Randomness is philosophically interesting and really important to
technologists. I will survey a bunch of random stuff, including:
Applications of randomness, including cryptography and game theory
(they’re related). A hypothetical Poker server will be a running
example.
Various definitions of “random”, including one good one and several
bad ones used by most software people.
Pseudo-random number generators (PRNGs). Hardware random number
generators, including entropy gatherers. I will show an open-hardware
open-source high speed true random number generator built by Bdale
Garbee and Keith Packard that I’ve been involved with, which will
provide 12Mb/s of random bits through a USB port for about $15.
Statistical tests of randomness and how various popular PRNGs fail.
Randomized algorithms, including my well-polished minitalk on The
Perfect Shuffle and a discussion of “Telephone Poker”.
Participants will write code for a couple of popular PRNGs and
evaluate their performance during the session.
If you want to understand randomness better (and you should), this is
the talk for you. |

Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are starting a new book [Metaprogramming Ruby 2: Program Like the Ruby Pros](https://pragprog.com/book/ppmetr2/metaprogramming-ruby-2) by Paolo Perrotta. This week we will discuss Chapter 5-6.
Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.

This month:
No talks planned yet. Lyle Kopnicky has been coming to grips with a lot of things about functional reactive programming, applicative functors, arrows, and monads lately, and would be happy to discuss these, but doesn't have a talk prepared. There are several talks on YouTube, blog posts, papers, and software tools (such as Elm) that may be worth looking over in the meeting.
See the <a href="https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/pdxfunc">mailing list</a> for details on this month's agenda.
Attendance is limited at this venue. RSVP via the <a href="http://www.meetup.com/Portland-Functional-Programming-Study-Group/">Meetup group</a>.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming, based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Lisp, Clojure, Scala, Oz, Agda, Idris, and others. The group meets regularly on the second Monday of the month for presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts.</em> |
