On Saturday, November 15th, Coderetreats will be held all around the world as part of the Global Day of Coderetreat, bringing people together from all over the globe. Every year, thousands of coders all over the globe join together, and Portland will have it's fourth annual event!
Come join your fellow Portland programmers to practice the art of software development together. Write code, learn from others, teach someone else, and expand your network of friends who are passionate about their craft. Show up with your laptop and favorite development tools to participate, everything else is provided. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served. The event is free, thanks to our generous sponsors covering food costs.
Code Retreat is designed to hone software craftsmanship skills and software design through repeated attempts to build an implementation of a well-known software problem (Conway's Game of Life). Developers use pair programming and discussion to exchange knowledge, and additional constraints are given throughout the day to emphasize good design concepts and practices. <b>Teach a Grandmother, Change the World (R&D for Illiterate Populations)</b>, presented by Elena Moon and Jos Vaught, Osage Orange
<i>How do you design a tablet app for poor, rural users who have never handled a digital device? What do you do when they speak no common language, and lack the ability to read in their own?</i>
Last year Elena Moon (founder and User Experience Director of Osage Orange) and Jos Vaught (Lead User Experience Designer) traveled to Rajasthan, in India, to learn from an international group of grandmothers who were learning to become solar engineers, despite a lack of literacy. Each had traveled from a different part of the world to participate in the 6-month Solar Grandmother program, hosted by India’s Barefoot College, a 40-year-old grassroots institution dedicated to helping marginalized people (living on less that $1 a day) build skills that bring solutions.
After graduation, these women will bring light back to their villages -- light that means night classes for children, reduced danger from assault and rape, and less need for kerosene lanterns, improving the local air quality. These Solar Grandmothers also become respected leaders in many cases, presenting a model for women’s empowerment to the rest of their community.
This project focused on the challenges graduates faced upon returning to their villages. Since the needed solar equipment can take months to arrive, graduates can struggle to maintain the skills they learned on campus. While highly supported during their time at Barefoot College, these women receive little initial support from the community once back home. Osage Orange wanted to learn whether a digital tablet could help ease the transition, by extending and maintaining the skills learned during training.
Over the course of three weeks, Osage Orange led a team of designers in interviewing and observing 60 Solar Grandmothers and their Barefoot teachers, both in class and back in their villages. In this talk, Elena and Jos will walk us through that process, and share what they found.
<i>Osage Orange, a human-centered design boutique based in Portland, Oregon, works with a variety of clients, from fortune 50s to startups, helping businesses research, conceptualize, and design elegant, compelling products. They work on complex problems across many industries, whether it’s an education platform for illiterate, rural poor communities, or a spaceship interface for NASA astronauts. Increasingly, their work focuses on projects which promote positive social and environmental outcomes.,</i>
<i>Elena Moon is a User Experience Consultant and the founder of Osage Orange. She has been doing a mix of research and design for the last 15 years and particularly enjoys socially and environmentally conscious projects. Her work has supported community agriculture, open source education, home energy conservation, and the deaf-blind community. She was a recipient of the Thomas J. Watson fellowship to conduct anthropology work with indigenous peoples in Australia and Papua New Guinea and has been involved with Portland's Interaction Design Association for many years, leading it from 2012-2014.</i>
<i>Jos Vaught is the lead User Experience Designer of Osage Orange. He has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s in Applied Linguistics. From 2012-2014 he served as a co-organizer for Portland’s Interactive Design Association.</i>

The "Zettabyte File System" was developed at Sun Microsystems and is now available in Oracle Solaris and various open source operating systems thanks to the OpenZFS project. ZFS is big, complex and has many knobs to turn but it is also quite amazing.
This talk will discuss the fundamental issues that ZFS is designed to address and how it addresses them. We will discuss ZFS planning and best and worst practices.

"Drupal is one of the more widely adopted CMSs. It is open source and has a huge developer base. However, I rarely hear a DBA mention having to administer Drupal with anything but frustration and pessimism. At Acquia, we have thousands of Amazon instances running Drupal databases. Most sites are quite different from each other, but some basic principles apply to all. Being the DBA for Drupal does not have to be a negative experience! In addition to covering the generic Drupal MySQL configuration tips, I will cover optimization methods for specific features like semaphores, sessions, Views, and the various Drupal caching layers. I’ll also cover the use of query cache in the Drupal context, which while normally frowned upon in the MySQL community, is often beneficial in maintaining a healthy Drupal site. "

Stubbing and careful design can carry you a ways, but eventually you need to actually test your code against those gems you’re building on. Luckily, there are ways to reduce this pain. We’ll dig deep on creating a simple environment to check your work against multiple dependencies. We’ll see patterns that help avoid pulling your hair out when those dependencies change. We’ll even search around the raw edges, examining how to verify what your code does when it lands in an environment you haven’t tested. There’s a multitude of gems out there to build on. Let’s see how we can test with them!

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.

We safely escaped the wonders and horrors of metaprogramming with Elixir Macros last month.
This month we'll be looking at another core feature of Elixir that comes from its Erlang underpinnings... Distributed applications/systems. We'll take a look at some of the patterns we've used in past meetups and how we can rework and refactor them to run efficiently on multiple machines rather than just a single host.
Side note: Afterward there will also be a small karaoke caravan to Chopsticks on E Burnside to get in a few last crowd-pleasers before Chopsticks closes for good.
For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike.
If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches.
Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns.
If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them.
Food and drinks will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning team.
Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go.
