Fresh Beats: Creating The World's Thinnest Boombox
Combining 1980s music culture with a retro future, The World's Thinnest Boombox is a portable Linux-based sound system featuring active electronics mounted onto an artistically designed printed circuit board. In this presentation, Joe will discuss his engineering process, the complex circuit board fabrication techniques used in the project, and the challenges he faced along the way.
Bio: (scraped from https://grandideastudio.com/about/)
Joe Grand is a product designer, hardware hacker, and the founder of Grand Idea Studio. He specializes in creating, exploring, manipulating, and teaching about electronic devices.
Also known as Kingpin, Joe was a member of the legendary hacker group L0pht Heavy Industries, where he helped raise awareness of the hacker ethos and the importance of independent security vulnerability research. He also brought engineering to the masses as a co-host of Discovery Channel’s Prototype This, which followed the real-life design process of a unique prototype every episode.
Joe holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts and a Doctorate of Science in Technology (Honorary) degree from the University of Advancing Technology in Tempe, Arizona. |

Each month we host a local founder who will give a short presentation about their company. They will focus on how it all got started, where they are today, and their plans for the future including the challenges they face to make their goals happen.
Following the presentation our host, Dave Barcos will dig into the founder's background, the company's story, and other observations. After the interview, we will have an audience Q&A session to help attendees ask direct questions of the presenter.
It has proven to be a great format to catalyze the local founders and the startups in the region. You won't want to miss it.
For more details on other North Bank events check our event calendar at https://www.northbankinnovations.org/events
Please note, that we encourage genuine networking, not hunting for sales or leads. If you are genuinely starting or working with a startup, this is the right crowd for you. Thanks for helping us keep it real.

We're starting free in-person workshops...cause we all gotta level up!
We're calling it "Startup School".
The main topic of this workshop is...
"How to Get Your First Customers".
Our 2 speakers are Pat Cheung and Andreeas Trattner, and they'll share their journey on getting their first customers.
Pat Cheung is the founder of Fanlist. He'll share details on how he landed his first 50 customers through a tradeshow. He'll walk through all the tactics he used to sponsor a tradeshow booth, what went well, what didn't, and how he did it on a budget...with a full breakdown of costs.
Andreeas Trattner is the founder of reachtools. Andreeas will speak on his journey in acquiring initial users as a bootstrapper. He will cover leveraging his network, utilizing Google Ads, and his strategy for creating a direct mail campaign in 2024, as well as the limitations of these approaches.
Space is limited...so RSVP's are required!
Optional group lunch at nearby food carts after the meetup!

FOSSY - Free and Open Source Software Yearly
Roll back
| description |

FOSSY (Free and Open Source Yearly) is a 4-day conference addressing many of the most pressing issues faced by individuals who feel trapped and mistreated by the software and devices permeating society. Over fifty exceptionally qualified speakers will talk about the ethical, legal, social, and technological aspects of how we get to a better world, where computers actually serve and empower the people who use them. Attendees of all experience levels, including those completely new to free and open source software, will find sessions of interest. Registration is on a sliding scale, and includes breakfast, refreshments, and a social event to meet and network with speakers and other attendees.
Put on by Software Freedom Conservancy, a nonprofit organization centered around ethical technology. Our mission is to ensure the right to repair, improve and reinstall software. We promote and defend these rights through fostering free and open source software (FOSS) projects, driving initiatives that actively make technology more inclusive, and advancing policy strategies that defend FOSS (such as copyleft). |

in person meetup
Portland Java User Group
Join us for the PDX JUG July Meetup where we will dive into the world of Structured Concurrency. Structured Concurrency is a preview feature in Java 21 and will simplify the common scatter-gather kind of pattern.
Tyler Van Gorder is our speaker, he has previously spoken about Virtual Threads in Java, and Structured Concurrency is a great complement to Virtual threads. In Tyler's words:
"Simplify concurrent programming by introducing an API for structured concurrency. Structured concurrency treats groups of related tasks running in different threads as a single unit of work, thereby streamlining error handling and cancellation, improving reliability, and enhancing observability."
We will briefly recap how virtual threads work and then explore how related tasks can be grouped as a single unit of work. We will cover the different shutdown strategies and examine how the programming model compares to similar functionality using a reactive framework."
Don't miss this opportunity to network with fellow Java enthusiasts, share your experiences, and learn from each other. Whether you are interested in web development, software development, or JVM languages, this meetup is open to anyone who is passionate about Java. |

Wefunder is coming to Portland as part of a cross-country train trip to meet mission-driven founders! Come meet us and learn about community rounds over a bit of pickleball :)
Wefunder is the industry leading platform for pre-IPO startup investment, sort of like a cross between Robinhood and GoFundMe. We’re on a mission to fix capitalism, boosting small business and small-scale investors by allowing anyone to invest as little as $100 in ideas they believe in. We work with all businesses – from craft breweries to curing cancer in dogs, and from a shipwreck treasure hunt to multiple companies now valued at over $500m. |

Startup Conversations in the Couve
Roll back
| description |

Amina Moreau is a chronic entrepreneur with a penchant for big achievements, having built five successful companies, sold two of them, and led one of her teams to win five Emmy Awards.
Radious is her next big thing, an online platform that outfits residential properties (like houses and apartments) with workplace amenities, and offers them up for company workdays and team meetings — rented by the day. With Radious, companies get on-demand access to unique workspaces, right in employees’ neighborhoods.
When she’s not busy building Radious, you’ll find her grunting on the tennis court. Ranked #1 in the Pacific Northwest just recently, she continues to play at a high level and finds her sense of peace crushing it at 100 MPH.
About North Bank Innovations
North Bank Innovations is an organization based in Southwest Washington, committed to building a thriving ecosystem that helps early-stage startups.
About the Startup Conversations Event
