Strata: Portraits of Humanity - Church of St. George at Akrefnio
Roll back
description |

March the 15th, 1311. On a plain in central Greece, two armies are facing each other. On one side, Frankish knights from the Duchy of Athens. On the other side, their Catalan mercenaries of the Catalan Company demanding more benefits. The Frankish knights lose the battle and perish almost to the last. One of the few surviving knights, Anthony le Flamenc, prays to St. George for holy assistance in battle. In gratitude for his salvation, the knight orders a church built, dedicated to St. George, in Akrefnio, Boeotia. This is his story. |

1:30-2:30 Identifying and Improving Confidence in your Security Posture with Christopher Kusek and Kris Rosenberg in room WIL 122
With the recent rash of high profile security attacks in the industry the question is raised as to whether your IT security is fit to handle breaches of that magnitude or whether you’re merely practicing security theater. This presentation goes behind the scenes to address whether ‘compliant’ means secure, and how to look beyond the ‘checkbox’ and how to provide a comprehensive secure environment with actionable threat intelligence to quickly identify and mitigate events as they’re occurring. |

Join us for the Feburary meeting of PdxDevOps.
Agenda:
1) Overview of Nix and NixOS by Corbin Simpson (Acquia) (second try)
[Nix](http://nixos.org/nix/) is a package manager designed to perfectly isolate dependencies and yield reproducible builds. The [NixOS Linux distro](http://nixos.org/) is built on top of Nix. We'll look at how Nix relates to the modern devops environment and how it can simplify continuous integration and configuration management.
2) "Creating Efficient Dockerfiles" by Isaac Stefanek
Docker can do many great things for the continuous integration and delivery process. One of the benefits that can be achieved using Docker is speeding up the build and deploy times. Creating Docker files that maximize this benefit can take some work, especially if you are dealing with a bloated technology stack. We'll take a look at some common best practices that will have your Docker builds running at warp speed. The examples will be focused on building NodeJS applications, but many of the concepts will be universal for any Dockerized app.
pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. The group welcomes participants interested in any related products, technologies and methodologies. The group has been meeting regularly since August 2010 for presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. Every month 15-35 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for devops – join us! |

2) "Creating Efficient Dockerfiles" by Isaac Stefanik
Isaac has been working a lot lately on streamlining his build process and have come
up with some best practices for creating Dockerfiles that create small
images and minimize the build/deploy time. The demos would be focused
on building NodeJS applications, but many of the concepts would be
universal for any Dockerized app
pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. |

Open Space at Work!
Roll back

Are you not sure how to start solving the tough problems that you and your organization face? Do you ever wish that you could leverage the combined knowledge of your coworkers to innovate? Have you ever wanted to cross-pollinate practices across your company without having to plan a conference without PowerPoint and speakers and did I mention PowerPoint? Then Open Space might be right for you. Open Space is a facilitation technique that empowers large groups to leverage the shared knowledge of the attendees to self-organize to understand and ultimately solve problems (large and small) facing individuals, teams, and organizations. Open Space Technology has been used by corporations, non-profits, and community organizations to share knowledge, work through problems, and determine how to take action. At this month’s AgilePDX, we’ll learn how two Portland companies, ShiftWise and Tripwire, use Open Space to spread knowledge across team silos, identify organizational impediments, and guide change from the bottom up, while injecting some fun and teambuilding.
The discussion leaders:
Phyllis Thompson is the Agile Process Coach at ShiftWise, where she is has participated in the company’s agile adoption since 2012. Phyllis has worked with agile teams for nearly 10 years in a variety of roles: Scrum Master, Agile Project Manager, Product Owner, and as the manager of a PMO
that rolled out an “Agile PLC” and Scrum/Agile training to more than 100 engineering team members at Serena Software, which used Scrum to develop an agile project management tool.
David began his career as a software engineer hacking on the Java Virtual Machine. After realizing that the challenges of leading people were just as exciting as crafting software that delights its users, he turned his attention to working with others to help grow individuals and Teams within the context of a larger organization. He feels that listening and communication are fundamental to understanding others and understanding yourself. By day, David is a member of Tripwire’s Agility Enablement Team. By night, he is an adjunct lecturer in the Computer Science Department at Portland State University. David likes watching things grown whether they are Teams, companies, his students, his family, or the vegetables in his garden.
As usual, pizza and pop are sponsored by the good folks at the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC). |

This Emacs Hangout will have the following agenda:
• Workshop for Literate Programming. Whether you hack in Clojure or JavaScript or something in between, we will demonstrate how to use the code blocks in org-mode to program the tough stuff using an updated variation on Donald Knuth's Literate Programming concept. We'll also cover some "Literate DevOps" (as shown [in this demonstration](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dljNabciEGg) ... or [read up about it here](http://www.howardism.org/Technical/Emacs/literate-devops.html)). Note: This is a workshop, so to fully participate, please bring a laptop running your favorite editor Emacs.
• Lightning Talks. Have something to share? Great! Each lightning talk with be around 5 minutes to show off something cool your learned, so come prepared! We don't know how many of these we'll have, but we're flexible.
• Office Hours. At 8:00, we will retire to Kell's for libations and to nerd the place up with Emacs Office Hours. Bring your latest project or issues, and get someone to help out.
We'll publish notes about this meeting at our [Github repository](https://github.com/howardabrams/pdx-emacs-hackers).
Note: Our monthly hangouts will be the third Wednesday of each month...however, we may alter this pattern for November and December. |

6:00 – Gather and settle in
6:10 – A few words from our groups and sponsor
6:20 – Mapping with Tableau – hands-on so bring your laptop
Tableau mapping 101
Introduction to using Mapbox with Tableau
Brief overview of using ArcGIS and Tableau
Tableau map examples
7:20 – Tableau Doctor
Great opportunity to ask any questions about mapping with Tableau!

Join us for our February meeting where James Churchill will be presenting "Using TypeScript Decorators with Angular".
Agenda
6:00pm Networking and Snacks
6:10pm Welcome and Announcements
6:20pm Presentation
Using TypeScript Decorators with Angular
TypeScript decorators, based on the ES2016 decorator proposal and introduced as part of TypeScript 1.5, provide developers with a way to modify a JavaScript class, property, method, or method parameter using a convenient declarative syntax. We'll start this talk by creating our own decorator, to see firsthand how they work. Then, we'll take a look at how decorators are used when creating Angular 2 components. Lastly, we'll see how to use decorators with AngularJS 1 controllers to make them look more syntactically similar to Angular 2 components.
About James
James has worked extensively with a variety of technologies, including ASP.NET MVC, Entity Framework, SQL Server, JavaScript, TypeScript, Knockout.js, AngularJS, and Twitter Bootstrap. James, a self-confessed geek who enjoys talking about programming and learning new technologies, recently joined the Treehouse team as a teacher. You can find James on Twitter @SmashDev. |

Evolving Perspectives on Women in Tech - can we have this conversation in a new way?
Roll back
description |
Join us for wine & cheese and a memorable, professionally facilitated, conversation about women in tech.
This will be a thought provoking conversation and all genders are encouraged to attend.
Some questions to consider are:
• Are you open to new perspectives?
• Interested in learning from others?
• What could you learn if you spent a day in another gender’s shoes?
• What do the genders have to say about each other?
• What’s the edgy, authentic conversation we’d like to have, but normally don’t?
We would love to have your voice in this perspective-enhancing conversation.
Cost: $20. We do take walk-ins but prefer that you register online (so we can have enough wine & cheese for you): http://www.meetup.com/Navigate/events/227512135/ |

<h2> Session 2 - An Introduction to Round Robin Databases</h2>
As technology professionals, we see a increasing applications for telemetry, systems monitoring, and real-time trend analysis. In some situations, unbounded storage of collected measurements may be impractical or unnecessary. Round Robin Databases are designed to store and maintain multiple time-series archives at varying resolutions. They employ methods that allow the storage of months or even years of data.
We will explore one such tool, RRDtool, a project started at the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis. At first, this open source tool helped with collecting and reporting on internet traffic. Since that time, it has inspired many other uses and tools. Our goal is to explore the retention decisions, downsampling of data consistent with it's business value, and how this approach is good for solving a specific class of problems.
<h3>About the Speaker</h3>
Chris Irvine is currently a Technology Consultant and founder at Threeprong.com, specializing in custom workgroup solutions, B2B integration, and performance tuning. He is a computer science graduate of Portland State University with professional experience in software development, system administration, and IT management.
Chris takes pleasure in applying technology to help solve problems for a variety of businesses and non-profits. Recent projects meet the needs of small business, workgroups in large enterprise, and also for government, in many segments and varied platforms.

### Testing REST: Functional Correctness At Scale Using AKKA and REST Assured
This month's speaker is Steve Hall who has 20 years of experience designing and delivering unique solutions to business problems. Steve is a Lead Software Engineer working with REST, big data and social solutions at Nike in Beaverton, OR.
His current project enables millions of users on mobile devices to follow and just as easily stop following any digital content that may be of interest to them. The team has found that building these systems using REST and NOSQL can scale massively. However, achieving that scale requires some unique approaches for handling the volumes of data that needs to be stored. Tonight he will present an overview of what the team has learned about data modeling in a typical NOSQL datastore such as Cassandra or Dynamo. Following that he will discuss why traditional unit, integration, and performance testing approaches proved to be inadequate, and why the team went looking for a better solution.
Having presented the problem, he will then present how the team has applied AKKA and Rest Assured to create a testing framework that proves the system is functionally correct at scale, and why it matters.
Finally, he will close with a few insights for other ways that AKKA could be useful when working at large scale. |
