create Calagator::Event 1250476383 OregonSQL - November Meeting - HiHo! HiHo! SQL Server on Linux, we go! Roll back

description nil Janis Griffin HiHo! HiHo! SQL Server on Linux, we go! Are you being forced to the ‘Cloud’ to reduce costs? SQL Server 2017 now runs on Windows, Linux, and Docker containers. Now SQL Server can be installed on Linux in order to provide a consistent database platform across Window and Linux servers, as well as on-premises and in the cloud. This presentation will discuss the advantages of using SQL Server on Linux, comparing architecture, cost and performance. Several demonstrations on installing and maintaining SQL Server on different Linux distributions and Docker will be shown, as well as best practice considerations for production/development environments. Also, several useful Linux commands for monitoring, managing and backing up SQL Server will be demonstrated. Finally, client connectivity and tools will be discussed – plus the new Azure Data Studio UI with the ability to add monitoring widgets will be demonstrated. Alfred Burnett Simplify Database Performance and Management Database management is complex. Database professionals are increasingly being asked to manage not only larger numbers of database instances, but multiple database platforms. Open source and NoSQL databases along with cloud adoption are all having a major impact, and DBAs are now expected to ensure the best performance and stability of this cross-platform database environment. But what if you could meet growing demands faster and with less risk? This means you’d get more time to innovate and focus on important projects. In this session, you’ll learn how to proactively manage all your database platforms from end to end. Items of discussion include: · Scoring optimal availability and performance out of Enterprise and Standard edition databases · Managing hundreds of database instances with ease · Maintaining databases both on-premises and in the cloud · Decreasing overhead by managing databases with little to no impact on performance

create Calagator::Event 1250476382 Habeas Data: Privacy vs. the Rise of Surveillance Tech Roll back

description nil You are being watched. Until recently, most of our personal activities were easy to keep private, and unearthing the details required at least some effort on the part of those seeking our information. Today, however, with the advent of social media and surveillance technologies, along with the movement of many aspects of our lives into the digital realm, our data has become more widely available and more public. Between emails, web searches, phone calls, CCTV cameras, social media posts, and online transactions, we can be tracked by private companies as well as our government. But, how much of this tracking is even legal? Cyrus Farivar’s book Habeas Data examines ten pivotal legal cases that have shaped our current rights related to privacy and also explores surveillance tools in use today. He’ll explain how those cases and tools affect our lives in 2019. Join us for a fascinating trip through legal and privacy history and into the present day to learn how law enforcement agencies and companies can collect and use our private details, often without our knowledge. Thanks to our sponsors Northwest Academy, KBOO, and Annie Bloom's Books! We hope to see you there! Schedule: 6:00 PM: Doors 6:30 PM: Presentation Speaker bio: Cyrus [“suh-ROOS”] is an investigative tech reporter at NBC News in San Francisco. In addition to being a radio producer and author, Cyrus was most recently a senior tech policy reporter at Ars Technica. He was also previously the sci-tech editor and host of “Spectrum” at Deutsche Welle English, Germany’s international broadcaster, from 2010-2012. Cyrus is the author of multiple books, including Habeas Data (2018) and The Internet of Elsewhere (2011). Praised by The New Yorker, among others, Habeas Data takes a look at legal cases that have had an outsized impact on surveillance law in America. His first book focuses on the history and effects of the Internet on different countries around the world. In 2017, Cyrus won the Technology Reporting award with Joe Mullin from the Society of Professional Journalists, Northern California Chapter for their August 2016 story: “Stealing bitcoins with badges: How Silk Road’s dirty cops got caught.” Cyrus has also reported for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, National Public Radio, Public Radio International, The Economist, Wired, The New York Times, Slate, and many others. He received his B.A. in Political Economy from the University of California, Berkeley and his M.S. from the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. description nil Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security? PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security! We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others. This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with. p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you!

create Calagator::Event 1250476376 PDX Exploit Workshop Roll back

description nil Hey everybody. That means you!

description nil We are holding our second meeting of the Founders Resiliency group on Friday November 22nd at WeWork Labs 12-1:30pm. In this supportive and confidential space, founders can speak their truth, get support and develop resiliency in the face of uncertainty and challenge. All are welcome at any stage. Bring your own lunch. For November, the group is reading The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, so if you plan on attending, please pick up or borrow a copy so you can discuss.

The fact that I have been able to get this project functional to any degree is a great credit to the FLO (Free/Libre/Open Source) community. In the process I’ve learned about many of the benefits and learning curves of FLO hardware and software. I primarily used Python, Open-Stage-Control, Sooperlooper, Ardour, Puredata and the Kxstudio repositories, and have iterated an extra portable version of the project on raspberry pi. I will share the perspectives I have gained in the process how I was able to receive AND share knowledge with Linux users both new and experienced alike. Because of this, I’ve learned much about bridging the gap between those people already familiar with Linux/FLO technology, and those who aren’t familiar – yet. Athan Spathas teaches robotics to kids and supports open source software however he can: one is as likely to find him performing on his linux based portable studio as much as find him performing on it, doing demos, or educating others about the benefits of open source technology. ATTENTION! Thanks to a new security policy, attendees will need to enter through the 1900 SW 4th entrance by 8PM, just North of the 1930 SW 4th entrance adjacent to Hawaiian Express, formerly Taco Del Mar: https://www.google.com/maps/place/1900+SW+4th+Ave,+Portland,+OR Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting. description nil "Judge a person by their questions rather than their answers" - Voltaire Do you want to solve problems quickly or be unafraid to talk to anyone? I'm going to experiment with my social skills by interviewing at least twenty strangers in public. My goal is to ask the most interesting questions and if I'm successful, it will lead to even more interesting questions. This is a great way to learn about a person or topic very quickly. I'm planning to record my interviews and share my techniques by recapping the results during the Meetup. If anyone would like to volunteer, we can practice the "Art of Questioning". If you're a student "Questioning is the ability to organize your thinking around what we don't know" - The Right Question Institute. If you're a teacher, questions can guide a student to a better answer. Either way, we can do both. Be inspired! Knowledge Mavens

Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.
