Prior to World War II, systems — even complex systems — expected the human to fit or adapt to the machine or system. As systems became more complex, this approach started to fail, causing loss and injuries due to "Human Error." This led to the start of Human-Centered Systems Engineering and Design, by designing machines and complex systems to fit the human, not expecting people to adapt to the needs of systems.
This is the story of how Deb Mrazek's career as a Human-Centered Systems Engineer evolved and pivoted, as did the discipline of Human-Centered Systems Engineering and Design.
Deb co-founded Curiate.co to help people cultivate the quality, profile, and value of human-centered systems design in their organizations through workshops, embedded consulting, interim leadership, and tailored coaching. She believes that only by bridging the language and thinking of business and design can the true value of design truly be realized.

Public Tech Talk: "What is an EUTxO blockchain?" by Jamie Gabbay
Roll back
| description |
The UTxO (unspent transaction output) model is the underlying data structure of Bitcoin, which has since been extended to the Extended UTxO model.
It exists in code, but what does it mean? I will give a novel mathematical model based on some strikingly simple type equations which -- for me at least -- make it easier to see what is structurally going on. I will describe how the equations can be used to obtain two further models, one which is more abstract and one which is more concrete:
* A universal algebra axiomatisation, exhibiting Blockchain as an algebraic structure and so implying a general mathematics *and* specific testable properties against which to verify an EUTxO implementation, and
* An executable Haskell reference implementation

Portland Facial Recognition Ordinance Drafts
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Last month, we had a great panel discussion about the use of facial recognition technologies, where we looked at the accuracy of the technology as well as how it affects various groups of people and their civil rights. Due to a number of issues surrounding the technology, several cities have banned government agencies from using facial recognition, and there's currently a similar effort at the federal level.
In August, the City of Portland will consider two bills that ban the use of facial recognition technologies within the City. One bill addresses use by public agencies, and the other addresses private use.
Hector Dominguez, the Open Data Coordinator at Smart City PDX, within Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, is one of the chief authors of the proposed bills and will join us this month to discuss what each piece of legislation covers and how the bans, if approved, will work. He'll also talk about the internal efforts to develop a privacy toolkit that includes privacy impact and risk assessments, guidelines, and a Privacy Champions Network.
Links to drafts of the legislation and the City Code amendment are available on the meeting registration page at:
https://www.meetup.com/Portlands-Techno-Activism-3rd-Mondays/events/271802710/
Bring your questions and join the discussion. We hope to see you there!
Speaker bio:
Hector Dominguez is the Open Data Coordinator at the City of Portland. In 2009, Portland became the first city in the United States to adopt an Open Data Resolution to encourage the expansion of the technological community by promoting open data and partnerships between City government and the public, private and nonprofit sectors, academia, and labor.
By attending this TA3M meeting, you agree to follow our Code of Conduct:

Polybase – It’s What’s for Dinner
Polybase is Microsoft’s great new replacement to linked servers. With the current version in SQL Server 2019, one can connect to multiple data sources such as Teradata, Apache, Hadoop, Oracle, and many many more. We will review best practices for setting up Polybase and its Scale-Out groups as well as showing how it interacts in an AlwaysOn Availabilty Group. When Scaling-Out (up!), Polybase is able to work harder and deliver more data. What happens when one of its node disappears? We will have a live demo demonstrating how to manage the Scale-Out group when bad things happen. In addition, the DMVs for managing Polybase will be reviewed, and finally, there will be results of the impact of using multiple nodes in the Scale-Out group on the Polybase queries! |
