create Calagator::Event 1250471854 Semantic Data Mining and Deep Learning Datasets @DAMAPDX Roll back

description nil Dr. Dejing Dou leads the Advanced Integration and Mining (AIM) Lab at the University of Oregon. In this talk, we focus on the use of formal (Semantic Web) ontologies in two data mining and deep learning tasks, using health datasets as the data domain. We will show how Semantic association mining allowed discovery of indirect (hidden) associations within the datasets (in this case, among diseases and drugs within electronic health records). We will also show how Ontology-based deep learning was used to predict human physical activities within a health social network. For more information and to register: https://damapdx.wordpress.com/2017/04/20/may-2017-semantic-data-mining-deep-learning-in-health-datasets/ <h3>Schedule</h3> 8:30 – 9:00 am – Sign In <br> 9:00 – 10:15 am – Presentation <br> 10:15 – 10:30 am – Break, Chapter Announcements <br> 10:30 – 11:30 am – Presentation continued <h3>Cost</h3> Costs cover continental breakfast and speaker travel costs <br> - Free for Members (and employees of corporate members)<br> - $15 for Non-Members <br> - $5 for Students with valid student ID <br> See our corporate members at the link above <h3>About DAMA Portland </h3> The Portland Metro Chapter of the Data Administration Management Association has been serving the Portland data community since 1984. create Calagator::Event 1250471852 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting Roll back

description nil We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations. **This month's meeting is on the 27th floor.** ##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm ###Main Presentation TBA ###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat. "We'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. We'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding." **Please Bring Your Laptops** After presentations we'll have more socializing time. ##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!** ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 5th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 27th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking. ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!*

create Calagator::Event 1250471846 LIT-Lab PDX (Legal Innovation & Technology) - Meetup with International #NewLaw Leaders Cat Moon, Jeena Cho, & Alix Devendra Roll back

description nil <p>I'm very excited to announce an impromptu May 8 Meetup with three internationally recognized leaders in the NewLaw and LegalTech movements: Cat Moon, Jeena Cho, and Portland's own Alexandra Devendra! </p> <p>These forward-looking lawyers will lead a panel discussion ranging from hot topics like the blockchain and AI in legal, to less buzzworthy (but perhaps more important) concepts like what legal teams can learn from the ResponsiveOrg and Holocracy movements, why a meditation practice can help you deliver better client value (and how to start one), how to innovate using the tools of design professionals, and why diversity is the key to achieving better outcomes.</p> <p><b>Cat Moon</b> (<a href="https://twitter.com/inspiredcat">@inspiredcat</a>) teaches legal design thinking and agile project management at <a href="https://law.vanderbilt.edu/academics/academic-programs/law-and-innovation/">Vanderbilt Law School</a>, her alma mater. She is a contributor to the ABA’s <a href="http://www.lawtechnologytoday.org/author/caitlin-moon/">Legal Technology Today</a> blog and writes there and elsewhere about legal technology, blockchain, kanban and agile project management, design thinking, diversity/inclusion in the law, and work/life alignment. Cat also is co-founder, COO and CDO of <a href="http://www.legalalignment.com/">Legal Alignment</a>, a legal tech startup developing an AI-powered, interoperable platform for legal workflow and project management. She just wrapped up an international conference on Blockchain in the Law and the first <a href="http://www.mclegalhackers.org/">Music City Legal Hackathon</a>. </p> <p><b>Jeena Cho</b> (<a href="https://twitter.com/Jeena_Cho">@jeena_cho</a>) is the co-author of <i><a href="http://theanxiouslawyer.com/">The Anxious Lawyer, An 8-Week Guide to a Joyful and Satisfying Law Practice Through Mindfulness and Meditation</a></i> (ABA). She is a regular contributor to <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/jeenacho/#3b265cfd5a6a">Forbes</a>, <a href="https://bol.bna.com/author/jcho/">Bloomberg</a> and <a href="http://abovethelaw.com/author/jeenacho/">Above the Law</a> where she covers resilience, work/life integration, and wellness in the workplace. She regularly speaks on women's issues, diversity, wellness, productivity, mindfulness and meditation. She also co-founded <a href="http://shapethelaw.com/">Shape The Law</a>, an unconference for lawyers, with Alix Devendra and Mary Redzic.</p> <p><b>Alix Devendra</b> (<a href="https://twitter.com/alixdevendra">@alixdevendra</a>) is an attorney and legal design consultant based here in Portland. She <a href="https://devendra.design/">helps lawyers</a> make their work product more effective using typography and other principles of visual communication design. She is the co-author (with Cat Moon) of the forthcoming <i>Designing Your Practice: A Design Thinking Approach to Legal Services</i>. Alix also consults for legal-tech startups, who value her experience in both law practice and design thinking. She travels internationally to speak and facilitate workshops on legal design.</p> <p><br>We'll be at a new location this time, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/BackPedalPDX/">BackPedal Brewing</a> at NW 15th and Flanders. They are opening especially for us and their (excellent) beer will be on tap--please plan to support them!</p> <p>Finally, we're looking to grow this group. Please forward this invitation to anyone you think would be interested in these topics, including listservs or other groups you're a part of.</p> <p>Let us know if you have any questions; we hope to see you on Monday May 8!</p> <p>--John & Zac</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250471832 Designers Taking Action Roll back

description nil Design has an extensive impact on how social movements are activated. Designers are engaging in campaigns and social issues at increasing levels, and non-designers are learning and implementing design practices for a more effective movement. Design is employed to shape activism, including everything from establishing a voice and brand, to empathizing with an audience and rapidly prototyping to maximize your impact. Kicking off this monthly event will be speaker Natalie Sundeleaf Sept, who has found her passion at the intersection of activism, engagement, art, and design. Natalie will discuss how designers, makers, and artists react to times of change through both resistance and forward thinking. Natalie calls herself a meeter and a maker, and turned her energy into activism when she worked on Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Post-election, Natalie returned to PDX and organized What Now, a powerful event at Revolution Hall discussing the future of the Portland community with 1500 passionate attendees. Taking place at the Center for Architecture the morning of May 5th, this presenter will help convey to attendees the power of design in social activism. Complete with breakfast and coffee, the kickoff of Design Museum Mornings is not to be missed! #DMMornings __________________________________________________ Design Museum Mornings is a monthly event series brought to you by Design Museum Portland. These events are meant to inspire you before your day begins and bring you closer to the Design Museum Portland community. Each event will include a short presentation by a local thought-leader, free breakfast, and great people to wake up with. These events are hosted and sponsored by various generous businesses of the Greater Portland area. If you are interested in hosting one of these events, please check out our host page for more information.

description nil Have you ever wondered why some approaches work well in one context and not so well in others? In order to improve our chances for success, we need to understand the nature of the situation we are working with in order to take appropriate action. Failing to recognize the nature of the situation at hand results in misinformed decisions with potentially catastrophic consequences. Cynefin is a sensemaking framework that helps people understand their context and situation in order to take appropriate action. In this meetup we will review the basics of the Cynefin framework and discuss other options for continued learning. create Calagator::Event 1250471821 Refresh Portland — The Shady Web: How CSS is your brand’s body language Roll back

description nil Navigating the web has turned into a treacherous exercise. Between sidebars, popups, scroll overs, and pre-checked boxes, you have to avoid the content you don’t want to unearth the content you do want. As these practices in distraction and diversion become the norm, marketers are pressured to follow suit. Just because marketers can, does not mean that we should. We need to do better. We shouldn’t have to resort to cheap tricks and bait-and-switch tactics to generate sales. Together we will look at the difference between influencing genuine user behavior and tricking people through the use of CSS patterns and interactions. Learn how you can add motion into your digital properties in a way that builds trust with your users and gives them what they need, and nothing more. Our Presenter, Heidi Olsen Heidi Olsen has navigated through the treacherous world of web development for the past 9 years. Her goal is to make the web less shady and more thoughtful. You may find her browsing Twitter, blogs, and Slack channels in search of finding better approaches to our digital space. Heidi is currently a Senior Developer at eROI, a full-service creative agency in Portland, Ore. eROI partners with innovative brands such as Taco Bell, Nike, and Aramark to craft compelling experiences.

create Calagator::Event 1250471820 Agile in Context: How to Improve Agile Development Using the Cynefin Framework Roll back

description nil Have you ever wondered why some Agile concepts work well in one context and not so well in other contexts? With so many tools, techniques, models, methods, practices, and principles available, how do you decide which ones are appropriate for a given situation? Agile methods, practices, and principles are successful primarily because they are effective heuristics. Heuristics are anything that provide a plausible aid or direction in the solution of a problem. All heuristics work by exploiting the structure of an environment, so heuristics work well in some environments and less well (or not at all) in others. We need to understand why and where Agile methods and practices work - and where they don’t - in order to adopt, tailor, use, and improve them. Cynefin is a sensemaking framework that helps people understand their context or situation in order to take appropriate action. The Cynefin framework can be used to select Agile heuristics appropriate for the environment (e.g. use Scrum here, and Kanban there) rather than defaulting to a single, recipe-based approach for all situations. Agile heuristics are especially important and useful for complex and complicated environments, where practitioners must work continuously to understand their context, and then respond quickly and flexibly to meet rapidly-changing needs. Agile in Context helps practitioners understand not only how, but also why Agile methods and practices work across different contexts. Understanding Agile in context increases the chances for successful adoptions and highlights areas where new methods need to be developed or repurposed from other disciplines. Treating Agile as a set of heuristics will also reduce recipe-based, dogmatic approaches that are fairly pervasive in the community at large today. Learning Outcomes: By the end of the session, participants should be able to: -- describe what heuristics are and why they work -- describe the Cynefin Framework -- use the Cynefin framework to identify and select heuristics to improve Agile development -- find additional information for continued learning Optional Pre-Work: A Leader’s Framework for Decision Making https://hbr.org/2007/11/a-leaders-framework-for-decision-making About the Speaker: Dan Walsh is a Founder and Principal of nuCognitive (www.nuCognitive.com). He has over a decade of expertise in accelerating product development, driving culture change, and transforming organizations. As a recognized leader in Lean Startup, org transformations, and complex adaptive systems, Walsh helps clients to resolve complex, intractable problems resistant to traditional methods. He is an advocate for the integration of learning with work, the cultivation of cultures where people thrive, and the application of heuristics to deliver holistic solutions to customer problems. Dan Walsh has a BS and an MS in Chemical Engineering from Texas A&M. He also has an MS in Systems Engineering and an MBA from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

create Calagator::Event 1250471816 Women Who Code Portland - Networking Night @ Second Story Roll back

description nil <p><img src="https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/3/a/b/5/600_460215029.jpeg"></p> <p>On Thursday, May 11th, <b><a href="https://secondstory.com/">Second Story</a> </b>will host Women Who Code Portland’s monthly Networking Night in their new design studio.</p> <p><br><a href="https://secondstory.com"><b>Second Story</b></a> is a network of experiential design studios working across the cultural and brand landscapes to elevate the art of storytelling. They build stories you can step inside of.</p> <p>The theme for the night is <b>Make It Happen: Improvising, Collaborating, Prototyping</b>. The format of the night is an “around the world”; after the welcome, we will break into 3 smaller groups and each smaller group will attend every session offered. The night will be centered around how the team at Second Story works collaboratively, how they create prototypes that help them push the boundaries, and the leadership styles that make it all possible. </p> <p>We hope you’ll join us. <b><a href="https://secondstory.com/">Second Story</a> </b>is absolutely thrilled to host us in their new studio!</p> <p> <b>Program</b></p> <p>6:00 - 6:30pm – Doors Open + Networking</p> <p>6:30 - 7:40pm – Welcome + Around the World Sessions</p> <p>7:40 - 8:00pm – Networking   </p> <p> <b>Session #1 - Improvising To Become Better Collaborators</b></p> <p>Second Story is a highly collaborative studio making work that none of them could possibly produce on their own. Needless to say they have to be excellent listeners and collaborators. So that means they have to practice. <b><a href="https://twitter.com/laura_allcorn?lang=en">Laura Allcorn</a>, Creative Lead and Sr. Experience Designer</b>, will lead a brief improvisation workshop that helps you brush up on our listening and collaboration skills. If the thought of this makes you nervous, please know this isn’t a performance and trying to be funny will be frowned upon.</p> <p><b>Session #2 - Getting Real Fast</b></p> <p>Prototyping is a necessity at Second Story. Their project teams will share how they prototype and why they do it. You’ll get a behind the scenes look at examples from projects with major museums and brands. Along the way they’ll share key learnings and show you how they evolved the experiences created.</p> <p><b>Session #3 - Exposing Unconscious Bias</b></p> <p><b><a href="https://twitter.com/kelseysnook?lang=en">Kelsey Snook</a>, Creative Director</b>, will facilitate a discussion about women in leadership roles. She will share the Second Story approach to tackling unconscious bias with their Make Some Room campaign, an effort to increase inclusivity in the tech and creative fields.</p> <p> <b>About Second Story</b></p> <p><a href="https://secondstory.com/"><b>Second Story</b></a> is a network of experiential design studios working across the cultural and brand landscapes to elevate the art of storytelling.
