create Calagator::Event 1250473171 CTRL-H - PDX Hackerspace - Maker Hangout Night! Roll back

description nil <p>Every Second Friday is Maker Hangout Night here at ^H. Come hangout with us at the most happening (and productive) place in town! Hackerspace activities encompass Hardware, Software, Crafting/Textiles, all the Realities (Real, Virtual and Augmented), Infosec, Audio/Video, Cryptocurrencies, Gaming, you name it - if it's technology then it's in scope. Our Hackerspace is a place where people with an interest in computing or technology can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. There is plenty of table space, bandwidth and 3D printers (for those looking to try that out). Bring your ideas, works in progress, or something to show off. We'll see you there!</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250473167 PDXnode - PDXNode Hack Night! Roll back

description nil <p>Welcome to the PDXNode Hack Night!</p> <p>What is a PDXNode Hack Night?</p> <p>PDXNode Hack Nights are your opportunity to enjoy a low-pressure JavaScript-centric environment where you shouldn't feel like you're supposed to do anything. First and foremost–just come and enjoy yourself. The night is yours: hang, hack, learn, or do whatever you’re interested in doing. 🙌</p> <p>Depending on the size and interests of our attending group, we have various paths the night could go, and may or may not attempt some of the following:</p> <p>Map Ctrl-H into Hackerspace Regions</p> <p>The hackerspace will be mapped into 'regions', and you can feel free to gravitate towards whichever one suits your interest!</p> <p>• A place for beginners who want to get going with node for the first time.<br>• A place for people who want to work on their own projects (eg. projects you want to do outside of work, but need to find the time).<br>• A place for people to just hang out and connect.<br>• A place for people to work on projects in groups!</p> <p>'Unconference'-style Team Hacks</p> <p>For team-hackers, we'll have a board up and sticky-notes available available at the beginning of the night. Anyone can feel free to write the name and/or description of something they'd like to hack on with other people–and others who're interested can feel free to go to that region and join in!</p> <p>End of Night Show and Tell</p> <p>There will be a list available to write your name, or team's name down on to give a quick show and tell of your projects at the end of the night. We're pumped to see what you've been working on!</p> <p>Some general stuff to remember:</p> <p>Help is available!</p> <p>There will be seasoned Nodesters ready and available to help anyone with questions or advice in any of the hack-zones: beginners, solo, and group projects. Feel free to reach out and ask at any time throughout the evening.</p> <p>Do what you want to do</p> <p>Above all, we hope for this to be an easy-going event for people to do what they want to do with the time we have. Make the time awesome, it's yours. 😎</p> <p>Code of Conduct</p> <p>PDXNode continues to abide by its Code of Conduct, and we ask everyone to commit to keeping to it in order for all of us to have a safe, fun, and amazing time.</p> <p>Wahoo! See you then! 🎉🎉 💻 🎉🎉</p>

update Calagator::Event 1250473156 Love Letters to Net Neutral Municipal Broadband Roll back

description Roses are red, violets are blue, we need net neutrality and public ownership too! Hope you like typewriters, this month's event will feature a lot of them. Comcast and other large internet service providers have successfully lobbied to repeal net neutrality, sell information about what you do online, and prevent localities from properly regulating them. Municipal broadband is the last line of defense against internet service provider abuses which threaten freedom of information, digital equality, and democracy itself. Municipal broadband is something many cities such as Tacoma, WA and Sandy, OR already have. In Portland we have been planning to build a municipal broadband network decades, now that our internet freedoms are under attack, it’s an idea whose time has come. 2:00 pm: Event starts 2:15 pm: Speakers 2:50 pm: Letter typing 3:20 pm: The big secret is revealed! ✨ <img src="https://i.imgur.com/GtBFrB1.png" height="300" width="500"> Roses are red, violets are blue, we need net neutrality and public ownership too! create Calagator::Event 1250473166 PLUG Linux Clinic Roll back

description nil The Linux Clinic meets once a month on the third Sunday from 1 - 5 pm at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, 97214. Bring your Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about. If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux. We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box. There will also be coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't do computers on an empty tummy.

After all, you can't do computers on an empty tummy.

create Calagator::Event 1250473156 Love Letters to Net Neutral Municipal Broadband Roll back

description nil Roses are red, violets are blue, we need net neutrality and public ownership too! ✨

description nil Hi everyone! This is the very first event in a new series of meetups for independent/alternative designers in Portland. Come on by and meet some folks! Let's talk about what we can do with a group like this. // ABOUT THIS GROUP // Work alone? Freelance? Self-taught? Only designer on your team? Only developer who cares about UX? You might be an indie designer. The goal of this group is to build community by sharing space, stories, process, techniques, and skills. We aim to help people feel more fulfilled, supported, and connected in their work. ALL people working or interested in design are welcome but most especially women, nonbinary folks, LGBTQA+, POC, and any others who are not well supported or represented in the tech industry. This is a community-driven event and so the format, process, and schedule of this series is still in flux. Things to think about: What do you need? How can we (this group) help? See Facebook event page for more details.

create Calagator::Event 1250473151 Healthcare in China: Challenges and Opportunities Roll back

description nil NWCC, OBI, and K&L Gates are delighted to welcome Jing Dipiero to the next event -- "Healthcare in China: Global Opportunities." Washington State China Relations Council sponsored her talk on the topic in Seattle, on Dec 6th, 2017. It was very well received. “Having been born and raised in Beijing before relocating her career to the US, Jing has acquired an uncommon depth of understanding and keen ability to navigate within the two systems. She expertly guided the audience through a history of healthcare in China. However, Ms. Dipiero’s analysis of healthcare in China compared to the US revealed that the system remains rife with challenges. As per capita income of the Chinese population rises, the Chinese government has been implementing universal health insurance that will cover 100% of 1.4 billion population with basic coverage. Such a lofty goal will present opportunities domestically and internationally for medical professionals, investors and technologists abound throughout the globe. As a company in the field of medicine, health and innovation, now is a good time to look into the possibilities made available by the increasing demand of Chinese consumers, the vast Chinese market, various funding options, and favorable government policies in support of entrepreneurship and international cooperation. Jing is the founder and CEO of DPR Consulting, LLC, an organization established by industry leaders in healthcare and global business. DPR Consulting introduces, educates and offers comprehensive solutions to Chinese patients, medical institutions, local and central government and American technology companies. This event is a collaboration between Northwest China Council, Oregon Bioscience Incubator, and K&L Gates.

create Calagator::Event 1250473142 Portland's Transportation Future: Business Stepping Up To The Challenge Roll back

description nil On January 30, BBPDX members and the general public can attend our first policy event of 2018 with regional leaders like Multnomah County Commissioner Jessica Vega Pederson, Portland Bureau of Transportation's Director Leah Treat, former Washington Secretary of Transportation Lynn Peterson, and ZGF Architects’ Nolan Lienhart. During the panel moderated by Oregon Humanities’ director Adam Davis, we’ll explore why it’s critical for businesses to engage in our region’s transportation challenges and how BBPDX members can make a difference. Over the past year, we’ve traveled with delegations of Portlanders to Los Angeles and Denver to learn about how diverse stakeholder groups collaborated to secure voter support for multi-billion dollar investments in regional transit and congestion relief. We learned about inspiring partnerships like the one from the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce that invited in regional environmentalists to work in the Chamber office on a shared vision. Additionally, at both the state and local levels, agencies are considering various approaches to address our clogged roadways including congestion pricing. Our member Luke Kanies wrote about this approach last year in the Portland Tribune. Big challenges call for bold visions and solutions oriented collaborations. We look forward to seeing you on January 30 and exploring how we can work together to create a more efficient and equitable transportation system for Portland.

Businesses who focus on transactions, contracts, and assets management are just a few of the initial sectors of the economy which will be disrupted. As the underlying technology begins to take hold, time-consuming and labor-intensive functions will be replaced by automated and “always on” smart processes. Centralized models of trust and authenticity will be replaced by decentralized services and crowd-based consensus algorithms. There will not be one blockchain but millions, each built on an application-specific architectures. Any store of information that requires exchange or validation across indirectly related entities will reside on a blockchain. Blockchains are safe, secure, and immutable — but all blockchains are not created equal. We will explore the subject by examining several current generations of blockchain implementations. <u>Topics during this session include:</u> <ul> <li> Architecture, Protocols, Algorithms </li> <li> Distributed Ledgers, Smart Contracts </li> <li> Trust / Consensus Systems </li> <li> Decentralization, Virtual Computing Environment </li> </ul> <h3>Speaker</h3> Mark Wheeler is a Blockchain technology enthusiast attending Portland State University majoring in Supply Chain Management. He has extensive experience in IT Operations working on Security, Network, and Application Server environments. Mark has worked within the education, insurance, healthcare, software development, telecommunication, and aerospace sectors of the economy. His current interests are in the field of data analytics, cloud computing, and Supply Chain automation technologies.
