Join us for happy hour at AltSource on September 17th.
In the tech industry, companies often tout all the “fun” benefits they offer to employees, but do those perks really matter to everyone? Yes, ping pong can be entertaining for a few minutes, and kombucha is great for your gut, but are these the types of benefits that make workspaces desirable for everyone? Let’s talk about it! This month’s theme will be: “Functional workspaces: from behavior to the needs of parents,” and to help get the networking flowing we will be using the conversation prompt: What’s something you need to make your workspace functional?
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 p.m. to share important announcements and showcase three members of our community.
A representative from our host company AltSource will share what they do and what job opportunities are available at the company

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

PNW's Language of Racism: Disrupting Passive Aggressive Communication Norms

What does racism sound like here in Portland? Is it subtle? Is it overt? Have I said something wrong? Have I been misunderstood? Why is racism so tricky to talk about?
This experiential engagement will explore the spoken and unspoken cultural norms of communication as key pieces to advancing racial equity in yourself and your workplace. Here in the Pacific Northwest (PNW), which includes Oregon, Washington and Idaho, we have a unique flavor of communication norms referred to as passive aggressive and conflict aversion. Based on WASP (white, anglo, saxon Protestant and middle class), the PNW regionally communicates indirect and 'watered down' sharing of information. This is significant because it is hard to manage for something if you cannot name it clearly for everyone to understand. Tone policing, vagueness, deflecting, blaming the messenger rather than engage in the content of the message, civility politics, conflict aversion etc are a few forms this takes.
Presenters Fleur Larsen and Jodi-Ann Burey, originally from Seattle and New York City respectively, will draw from their own lived experiences and invite attendees to do the same. We will identify how these regional norms impede addressing racial equity when people and institutions are not able to squarely name dynamics. White dominant culture is held together with the glue of passive aggressive communication norms here in the PNW making it really sticky to pull apart and identify racism in situations or conflicts. Together, we will name the ingredients needed to live into a better conversation and take racism head on.

About Fleur Larsen:
Fleur Larsen grew up in Seattle and learned how to relate to others based on the dominant identities she holds: white, protestant, working class, and socialized female. The norms of this region have a particular flavor of conflict aversion, indirectness and passive aggressiveness that are deeply ingrained in me from an early age. Unlearning these has been a HUGE place of personal and professional growth as she’s aimed herself at racial equity work.
Fleur started facilitating 18 years ago on challenge course programs with youth and adults. Currently, she works with several companies utilizing challenge and experiential facilitation with corporate and nonprofit groups. People often learn better by doing. Experiential facilitation engages and activates more parts of the brain. Her style is based on sharp analysis, flexible thinking, fun, purpose and results. Her work is relationship-based with connection, collaboration, and community as integral elements to reach results.
About Jodi-Ann Burey:
Jodi-Ann Burey is the Senior Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at The Riveter, a membership workspace and community platform built by women, for everyone. She leads the development of a robust programming portfolio that powers The Riveter’s mission to redefine equity in the workplace. With a strong focus on intersectionality, Jodi-Ann works to ensure all women and their allies—inclusive of any gender, race, ethnicity, age, sexuality, ability, and child status - can leverage The Riveter to develop as impactful leaders in their businesses, networks, and the world.
Jodi-Ann is also one of the founding members and co-chairs of the Seattle DEI Community of Practice (DEI CoP), an expansive network of professionals across industry committed to improving DEI practices at work. Jodi-Ann earned her Masters in Public Health from the University of Michigan and her Bachelors in Communications from Boston College. |

Rails 6 is officially released! We will round up the major new features coming your way. It is an exciting release due to some big features coming upstream from the Basecamp and GitHub projects. Amongst the many minor updates, useful tweaks and bug fixes, Rails 6 will ship with two completely new frameworks: ActionText and ActionMailbox, and two big scalable-by-default features: parallel testing and multiple database support.
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.

PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.

Have you ever gone above and beyond your job role only to feel emotionally drained? These days, emotional labor is all-inclusive. Being expected to do things for free in order to get the job done while keeping your emotions in check all fall under emotional labor. Join us at the Port of Portland while we explore and discuss ways of lifting women up and creating a support group at work.
Moderated by Priscilla Lim from Port of Portland and speakers Tanya Webb, from Puppet, Lakecia Gunter from Intel, and Tara Zaremba from the city of Seattle, this panel will discuss different types of emotional labor in the workplace, race and how it affects people of color, and cultural norms and stereotypes that are happening in the workplace.

The PDXWIT Women of Color in Tech group is a space dedicated to women and non-binary community who identify as Black, Indigenous, or a Person of Color (BIPOC). The evening will begin with pizza and beverages, and we are very pleased to welcome Bryce Adelstein Lelbach as our special guest speaker! Bryce will be giving a preview of his CppCon 2019 talk, "The C++20 synchronization library".
* The C++20 Syncronization Library:
In the decade since C++11 shipped, the hardware landscape has changed drastically. 10 years ago, we were still in the early stages of the concurrent processing revolution; 2 to 4 hardware threads were common and more than 10 was "many". Our tolerance for synchronization latency was greater; we were willing to pay microseconds and milliseconds.
Today, dozens and hundreds of threads are common, and "many" means hundreds of thousands. Concurrent applications are plagued by contention challenges that were unimaginable a decade ago. With the traditional tools we have today, programmers often have to choose between unacceptable contention and unacceptable high latency when synchronizing between threads.
The C++20 synchronization library brings solutions - new lightweight synchronization primitives that can efficiently marshall hundreds of thousands of threads:
- `std::atomic::wait`/`std::atomic::notify_*`: Efficient atomic waiting.
- `std::atomic_ref`: Atomic operations on non-`std::atomic` objects.
- `std::counting_semaphore`: Lightweight access coordination.
- `std::latch` and `std::barrier`: Marshalling groups of threads.
In this example-oriented talk, you'll learn how and when to use these new tools to build scalable, modern C++ applications that can run in parallel on virtual any hardware, from embedded controllers to server CPUs to modern GPUs.
* About Bryce:
Bryce Adelstein Lelbach has spent nearly a decade developing libraries in C++. Bryce is passionate about C++ evolution and is one of the leaders of the C++ community. He is an officer of ISO/IEC JTC1/SC22/WG21, the C++ Standards Committee. Bryce chairs both the C++ Committee's Tooling Study Group (SG15) and Library Evolution Incubator (SG18). He is the program chair for the C++Now and CppCon conferences, and the chief organizer of the Bay Area C++ User Group. On the C++ Committee, he has personally worked on the C++17 parallel algorithms, executors, futures, senders/receivers, multidimensional arrays, and modules. Bryce works at NVIDIA, where he leads the CUDA C++ core libraries team. He is one of the initial developers of the HPX parallel runtime system. He also helped start the LLVMLinux initiative and has occasionally contributed to the Boost C++ libraries.

CAT BarCamp is a free unconference hosted by the Computer Action Team at Portland State University every year.
BarCamps are free conferences where the people who show up on the day of decide what the conference is about. No scheduled talks are planned beforehand by the organizers, making the range of talks and topics covered each year entirely unique. Timeslots are posted in an accessible place and the attendants are given (fairly) free reign to post and choose which talks they would like to attend or give. From an early age, humans learn that objects can be sorted into meaningful orderings. This might be on the basis of an obvious physical feature (like "size") or something more subtle and subjective (like "cost" or "preference"). A particular cognitive skill arises from this understanding: the ability to perform a transitive inference. Although long studied as a facet of human intelligence, many other species are also able to make this inference. When considering several different experimental manipulations, the best explanation for transitive inference in these species is a cognitive representation of order that can be reasoned about and manipulated as though it possesses spatial properties. This cognitive faculty has deep evolutionary roots that predate the talent for mathematical and linguistic abstraction that humans often take for granted. Simulations using a computational model that embodies this theory suggest new directions for the study of this fundamental cognitive mechanism. |

Do you have a fresh, new SQL Server installation that you’d like to benchmark against the system you’re replacing? Or perhaps you’d like to run a workload against a test SQL Server instance to validate your monitoring & troubleshooting tools. If so, this session is for you!
HammerDB is a free, open source tool that allows you to run “quasi” TPC-C and TPC-H benchmarks against SQL Server, as well as Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. In this talk, Jeff Maaks from Fuchsia Innovation Advisors will introduce HammerDB and demonstrate its use via a SQL Server instance in the cloud. Jeff will also share some interesting lessons-learned from a recent customer engagement with a large-scale hyper-converged infrastructure vendor.

This demo heavy presentation will do a deep dive on a number of the new PoSh tools for SSRS. From deploying new SSRS installations to easily and *QUICKLY* backing up and restoring your reports, everyone will come away from this presentation ready to go to work with PowerShell!
Michael Wall has been a Database Administrator since he was asked if he wanted to be one after successfully managing the Y2K upgrade project on over fifty UNIX servers. Immediately thrust into a major Oracle upgrade project, he has since then managed multiple challenges and now is the sole DBA for a global food processing company responsible for both SQL Server and Ingres databases.
He was honored to speak at PASS Summit in 2018 and hopes to have the experience again!
He is currently very active in his SQL Server community (PACNW) both as a presenter and assisting with multiple SQL Saturdays. Having experienced the Power BI community, he has now gone back to basics and is working with his VAXen at work again.

Introduction to HammerDB
Do you have a fresh, new SQL Server installation that you’d like to benchmark against the system you’re replacing? Or perhaps you’d like to run a workload against a test SQL Server instance to validate your monitoring & troubleshooting tools. If so, this session is for you!
HammerDB is a free, open source tool that allows you to run “quasi” TPC-C and TPC-H benchmarks against SQL Server, as well as Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL. In this talk, Jeff Maaks from Fuchsia Innovation Advisors will introduce HammerDB and demonstrate its use via a SQL Server instance in the cloud. Jeff will also share some interesting lessons-learned from a recent customer engagement with a large-scale hyper-converged infrastructure vendor.

Even if you’re not planning to use JSON in the database yourself, you may come up against JSON in the SQL environment at some time. Let’s review some simple techniques to parse elements from a JSON formatted field and to generate JSON from SQL queries.

Always curious about how to bend SQL to do interesting things and totally drawn in when someone says “I don’t think you can do that with SQL”. Black Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Manufacturing careers (STEM 2.0) rarely have an opportunity to see one another at work or network with one another. This October, Black Women in STEM 2.0 will strive to change that by hosting a summit that allows them to meet and make long lasting
connections as they continue to thrive in their chosen professions.
The inaugural summit "Innovate to Accelerate — Transforming STEM" will take place in Portland, Oregon from October 10 through 12, 2019 at the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel. A pre-reception sponsored by Wieden + Kennedy and Umpqua Bank will be held on Thursday, October 10th from 5:30 to 8:00 pm that will kick off the summit of engaging panels, lectures and workshops.
