PDX Ruby Monthly Meeting
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
The March meeting will be held at Planet Argon, where we're going to learn about the gradual type checker for Ruby called Sorbet, from Getty Ritter and Trevor Elliott who maintain the project at Stripe.
Abstract:
"In June 2019, Stripe open-sourced Sorbet, a fast and powerful type checker for Ruby and a tool that has come to be indispensable for writing Ruby code at Stripe. We’ll discuss why and how we built Sorbet, including how specific choices and tradeoffs affected its design and adoption, as well as the experiences we’ve had in adopting, using, and open-sourcing Sorbet, and where we plan to take Sorbet from here."
Our second speaker of the evening will be the new/old organizer of PDX.rb Jonan, with a look through some rarely explored features of Ruby that may surprise you.
Come be social and make some new Ruby friends, we're looking forward to seeing you there! |

Exploring OWASP Juice Shop (with Burp Suite)

In this class, we’ll be exploring how to find the vulnerabilities in OWASP Juice Shop with Burp Suite (and maybe some other security tools if we get some time). You’ll learn to set up the environment to play with in your own time. As well as learning to practically apply the different features of Burp Suite and when it is and isn’t the most optimal tool. This will help you to reproduce security vulnerabilities or help find them for bug bounty programs.
Bio: Jordan is an Application Security Engineer at New Relic and a graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in computer science. She’s Champion ranked in Rocket League and does yoga in her free time.

Sunshine Workshop / Transparency Tool Teach-in
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Sunshine Week is a national initiative started in 2005 by the American Society of News Editors. It was established with the goal of bringing awareness to the public about government transparency and freedom of information. The week coincides with the birthday of James Madison, who was a key proponent of the Bill of Rights and of governmental checks and balances. He was born on March 16th, and this year, Sunshine Week takes place March 15 - 21.
Robin Ryan will join us this month to share ways to find hard-to-reach data about our government. She'll lead a workshop that guides us through a series of websites and other resources that reveal details that can help us shine light onto our government and keep it accountable.
This event will be a hands-on workshop, so please bring a laptop or tablet along with your ideas and questions!
We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there!
Schedule:
6:00 PM: Doors
6:10 PM: Introductions
6:15 PM: Presentation
Speaker bio:
Robin Ryan identifies as an investigative reporter and radio journalist focused on issues of social and economic justice. The Transparency Tool Teach-in is a workshop inspired by Sunshine Week, an annual convergence held to promote transparency and accountability in American government. The program is designed to show people how to navigate data-driven websites containing information on everything from money in politics to governmental spending from the hyper-local to the federal level. In the age of fake news, one immediate route to reliability means taking an active role in getting information unfiltered by editorial review.

Pitch Club is a collaborative workshop for any entrepreneur with the desire to create a perfect pitch. This event welcomes people who are practicing any kind of pitch (concept pitch, sales pitch, investor pitch etc.). Participants will receive feedback from their peers, TiE Charter Members and Investors.
TiE Women Pitch Club is moderated by ROBIN JONES and HEATHER SAMARIN.
Each attendee who intends to pitch should prepare a five minute pitch presentation (this can include a slide projection that will be presented from your computer). Directly after pitching a 5-10 minute Q&A will take place.
Those who pitch will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investors could ask. In addition, Each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch.
You do not need to to pitch to attend - many of the learnings come from just watching! |

Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?
PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.
p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |

Each Thursday, Alchemy welcomes anyone interested in our program, Portland's most accelerated coding boot camp, to stop in to take a tour of the school, meet our staff, students, and instructors, and ask any questions about an education and career in software development.
We look forward to meeting you! No appointment necessary, just stop in and we'll be ready to greet you!!!

Be supported by teaching assistants and career coaching. A low instructional staff to student ratio of 6 to 1 means you have access to the guidance and help you need to successfully complete our rigorous training. Get more out of your code school. Go beyond online and video-based programs to launch your career at an accelerated level. With a median starting salary of $76k (and an average starting salary of $86K), our graduates earn 25%-50% more than other schools.
Call 503.445.4575 or email [email protected] with any questions!
