create Calagator::Event 1250458402 Strategies For IT Sourcing Roll back

description nil In today’s business environment, Information Technology (IT) is not an option. The outsourcing of IT infrastructure is quickly becoming a critical decision for many businesses that are challenged to reduce costs, while maintaining their competitive advantage and planning for the future. Companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft are building massive data centers to provide for the needs of most businesses. While some of this is work in progress, today there are already many choices available to outsource your IT infrastructure. This course will give you the most practical, vendor-neutral perspective to make decisions on what is right for your business now and in terms of future choices for hosting your computing infrastructure externally.

update Calagator::Event 1250458170 Portland Functional Programming Study Group Roll back

description <i>ABOUT: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Scala, and others. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month. VENUE: You can enter the event space through the glass doors on 7th that are close to the intersection with Clay, or through the front door and just look for signs to the event space. There will be pdxfunc signs on both.</i> 1. Presentation: Jamey Sharp will give us a walk-through of the Haskell gzip deflate algorithm code that he and Josh Triplett developed. 2. Group coding activity: We'll split up into groups that will each try to build an FP app from scratch in an hour, and then share the results with everyone. We'll make teams with people of different skill levels, so having FP coding skills will be useful but not required. My hope is this activity will give more folks a chance to explore and learn from others how to design and implement an FP app. Sample app ideas: blog, Twitter-clone, Sinatra-like web-framework, message queue client/server, filesystem directory browser, CSV-to-JSON converter, etc. <i>ABOUT: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. create Calagator::Event 1250458399 Dr. Scott Burns - NW Major Earthquake Potential with discussion of both Haiti and Chile Roll back

description nil Portland is earthquake country. Three different types of earthquakes are possible in Oregon with two creating big threats for Portland. One is movement on local faults in the Portland area like the Portland Hills Fault. The other is the “Big One’ that could generate a magnitude of 9 along the coast and could last three minutes. Portland would be greatly affected by both. Dr. Burns will talk about the sources of these quakes and their past history and future chances and specifically will talk about both Haiti and Chile and their relevance to Oregon. Chile is a perfect example of what could happen in Oregon with the Big One.

update Calagator::Event 1250458375 SAOpdx: Parallel Java Programming for Multi-Core Processors Roll back

description Presented by the Developers Forum With over 6.5 million software developers worldwide, Java is used in every major industry segment, running on everything from cell phones to scientific supercomputers. Traditionally, it has been difficult for programmers to take advantage of the multi-core systems with their ever-multiplying number of cores. But that is all about to change with JSR-166y. Targeted for Java 7, scheduled for release in late 2010, JSR-166y adds a lightweight task framework known as ForkJoin (FJ) to the Java platform. Steve Dohrmann will be discussing the fundamentals of parallel Java programming. His talk will include the use of Java threads, an overview of the JSR-166y (ForkJoin) package, and some points on higher-level parallel programming models. If you're a Java developer, you can't afford to miss this opportunity to learn about the future of Java in a parallel world. And developers on other environments will find the overview of parallel application development and solid parallel algorithm fundamentals to be valuable in building systems that scale and provide competitive differentiation for your solutions. Meet the Speaker: Steve Dohrmann, Software Engineer, Intel Since joining Intel in 1994, Steve has worked in a variety of research, advanced development, and product groups within the company. He is currently working in a Java technology group and is focused on data-parallel programming for the Java VM. Intel will be giving away a brand new laptop for a door prize! description Jon Bach is coming to our local agile users group to tell us about his specialty, exploratory testing. Pizza at 6:30, meeting at 7. Speaker Bio: Jon Bach has been in testing for 14 years, 12 of which has been as a manager. His experience includes managing teams at Microsoft, HP and LexisNexis, and is currently a managing consultant for Quardev, Inc. -- a Seattle test lab. He speaks frequently about test management and exploratory testing, and is the co-inventor (with his brother James) of Session-Based Test Management. He’s also written a few articles for testing magazines as well as a listed co-author of a Microsoft Patterns and Practices book on acceptance testing (available for free online). Find him on Facebook, Twitter, or his presentations and articles on http://www.quardev.com, where he also has a blog. Jon Bach is coming to our local agile users group to tell us about his specialty, exploratory testing. Pizza at 6:30, meeting at 7. Talk: "Exploratory Testing: Now In Session" The agile nature of exploration and the ability of testers to rapidly apply their skills and experience make exploratory testing a widely used test approach—especially when time is short. But exploratory testing is often dismissed by project managers who assume that it is not reproducible, measurable, or accountable. If you share these concerns, a solution may lie in a technique called Session-Based Test Management (SBTM), developed by Jon and his brother James specifically to address these problems. In SBTM, testers are assigned areas of a product to explore, and testing is time boxed in "sessions" which have mission statements called “charters” to create a meaningful and countable unit of work. Jon discusses—and you can practice—the skills of exploration and demonstrates a freely available, open source tool to help manage your exploratoration. create Calagator::Event 1250458391 PDX Tweetup Breakfast - Hashtag, meet Hash Roll back

description nil We move back to the east side, courtesy of Hash Restaurant and Portland Groupon. Eva scored a half-off-breakfast thingy, $12 for $25, so by all means be really nice to her for the next week and who knows? you may get a free ride. My own attempts at adding a second Groupon to the fray were foiled by an extremely busy day and an adamant refusal to use Facebook Connect to login. I should have just bitten the bullet and done it (I eventually capitulated to get cheap acupuncture). As always, come prepared to buy your own breakfast and you can dance and sing if you are the beneficiary of coupon goodness in any way. Lots to talk about - IP8, the nascent pdxbreakfast.com, and more...

description nil How to learn to parse huge XML documents by doing it wrong for 5 years speaker: Tyler Riddle When XML documents can't fit into memory the vast majority of solutions available on CPAN are no longer available to you; when the XML documents are so large they take up to 16 hours to process with the standard tools for handling large documents your hands are tied even more. Tyler will cover his learning experiences creating the Parse::MediaWikiDump and MediaWiki::DumpFile modules which are made to handle the 24 gigabyte English Wikipedia dump files in a reasonable time frame. 1) Real world benchmarks of C and perl libraries used to process huge XML documents. 2) The dirty little secret about XS and what it means for you in this context. 3) The evolution of the implementation of a nice interface around event oriented (SAX style) XML parsing. 4) Why XML::LibXML::Reader and XML::CompactTree are your friends and how to tame them. As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.
