Agile Testing Open Northwest
Roll back
| description |
Sponsored by AgilePDX, Agile Open Northwest, TAO QA & Dev Forums, PNSQC:
"Agile Testing: How do WE Make it Work?"
As our organizations move toward "Agileâ for developing software, we all face the challenge of understanding how to adapt our former roles and ways of working to new work roles and processes.
How do we ensure the continued value of testing?
Join us in Open Space to share your questions, challenges, strategies, success stories, and how you've overcome stumbling blocks.
In small groups, weâll discuss topics such as:
· How is Agile testing different from how weâve always done it?
· How do we know what to test?
· How do we know what not to test?
· On Agile teams, when does testing happen and whose job is it?
· What is Exploratory Testing and why should we care?
· How do regression tests work?
· How does testing improve my design? Should it?
· How do we ensure it is cost effective?
· What do people mean when they say, "no defectsâ?
· Does Agile change how we test or does it just raise the existing issues?
Bring the topics you feel passion for and add them to the list!
Each self-organizing discussion group will create a document or other record of their discussion, ideas, questions, and insights. Weâll share everyoneâs experiences at the end of the day.
Who should attend?
· Testers facing an Agile adoption/People new to the testing role/Testers eager to jump in
· Devs who want to get serious about defect-free code
· CTOs and Managers of Test/Validation, Dev, Application Delivery
· Academics preparing new software/IT professionals for the real world
Cost to attend: $75 per person (Register early. We expect to sell out.) |

The New Tech Society was founded in the Fall of 2011 to bring together a diverse group of individuals; technologists from a variety of disciplines and industries within the Portland community. We meet one night each month to make new connections, exchange ideas and enjoy each other’s company.
If you have a need--be it solving a technical issue, finding a new job, hiring a new employee, promoting a product, service or event, or just making new friends, join us.
Please bring your friends. The vibe is low-key, casual and fun; be yourself!
It is our tradition to offer a free drink to the first 10 people to arrive.
RSVP on Linkedin, please.
See you there!

Apple iOS Devices & Computers in Business
Agenda:
6:00--6:20 Networking
6:20--7:00 No-host dinner
7:00--7:30 Introductions and announcements
7:30--8:30 Main Presentation (followed by Q&A)
Let us know if you're coming at meetup.com/itpro-70/events
Apple's iOS devices have become a revolution. Whether you use a Windows, Unix or Apple server platform, these devices are becoming the industry standard for such jobs as POS and CRM. They have even managed to overtake the long standing leadership position from Blackberry devices. Apple's MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac product lines are also gaining traction among business professionals. You see the easily recognized Apple logo consistently in TV shows and movies.
I will discuss the role of Apple products in the modern business landscape focusing on how they and their uses of the iCloud technology have 'changed the game' concerning daily computing. I will provide a series of examples of how iOS mobile devices are currently being used in the small business sector and how big business is beginning to get on board and why. Then I will outline the challenges facing IT support professionals concerning this rapid adoption of relatively new technology into long standing corporate environments and systems. These challenges include integration, security, deployment, app development/distribution and keeping up with Apple's constant flow of new products and software updates.
Presented by
James "Jamie" Pollock has more than 15 years of experience developing and implementing communication strategies, corporate training curriculums and Internet-based solutions for companies such as Jantzen, Symantec and Intel. As an independent consultant, he has assisted many small businesses in creating business plans and organizational development strategies through web development projects and direct coaching. He is currently an instructor for the MacPac Academy leading weekly classes in all things Apple and will have his Mobility Technology Competency (MTC) certification from Apple by the end of September.
He possesses a Bachelors of Science in Computer Information Systems from Roanoke College in Salem, VA and a Masters of Business Administration with a concentration in Organizational Behavior from Marylhurst University in Lake Oswego, OR.
Jamie's certifications include:

AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch: BA's on Agile Teams
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
It’s that time again, and this month we return to the topic we tabled last month in favor of discussing the recent big agile conference. This month, we’re talking about the business analyst role on the Agile Team?
“What?! A business analyst on an Agile Team?” you may say. Yes, many companies explicitly call out this role on the Team to support the Product Owner or draw from a pool of BA’s to fulfill the Product Owner function. The questions before us are many:
Is this a good idea?
What are the costs and benefits?
When does it make sense?
What about role boundaries? Doesn’t this institute them?
How come the BA would be on the Team? (some actually report into a product management function along with the PO’s.)
Why doesn’t my Team do this?
Isn’t this anti-Agile?
Well you might ask. Come down and ask it of a bunch of colleagues primed with questions and answers of their own.
Same bat time; same bat place: noon on Friday at Ringler’s (not Ringler’s Annex, keep heading east) on Burnside. Good food. Good beer. Good, straight talk. |

Roll back

Ever wondered about people who write in all capitals or in cursive? Did you know that how you write is really your brain writing? Handwriting Analysis is a method of determining personality and even physical wellness. Come to the Collective Agency to learn from Andrejka Coklyat more about what makes you and others tick!
The best handwriting sample is a letter beginning with a salutation, ending with your signature, written on unlined paper, with your favorite pen/pencil, on a comfortable surface about a neutral topic.

Computer Science Colloquium
Roll back
| description |
Title: Skolkovo, ARCCN, Software Defined Networking and OpenFlow
Speaker: Dr. Carolyn Turbyfill, Director of Engineering, ARCCN
Location: FAB 86-01
Time: 10:15am
Abstract:
What is Skolkovo? The goal of the Skolkovo Innovation Centre is "to concentrate international intellectual capital, thereby stimulating the development of break-through projects and technologies." [1] Companies engaged in innovative development are selected to become project participants and are provided with developmental assistance by the Skolkovo Foundation and its partners. The Applied Research Center for Computer Networks (ARCCN) is a non-profit organization within the Skolkovo project focused on creating enabling technologies for the next generation of computer technology. ARCCNâs vision is to develop a world class Russian center specializing in Software Defined Networking (SDN). SDN implements the control plane of network switches and routers in software running on separate servers, "to commoditize network hardware and provide a standard-based application development platform taking much of the features and functionality that exist inside custom proprietary software and driving it into an open SDN space." OpenFlow is an example of SDN. "OpenFlow offers a standard-based Application Programming Interface or API that links an Ethernet switch and a controller. This offers a model in which layer 2 Ethernet switches are low-cost merchant silicon based devices where flows are directed by a centralized controller(s)."[2] ARCCN is building collaborative relationships with international academic, research and commercial organizations.

Bio:
Dr. Turbyfill holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Her first research project in the field of Computer Science was the Wisconsin Benchmark that pioneered benchmarks by which relational database systems are measured today. She has advanced her career with milestones consisting of the first commercial implementations of leading edge products such as: the first firewall appliance, SunScreen SPF-100 and SKIP, one of the first commercial Virtual Private Networks (VPN); the first managed security service and the first round trip email marketing service. While at Sun Microsystems, she worked with CISSP, a coalition of companies, on changing export controls on encryption. As VP of Engineering at StackSafe, she led the team that developed the StackSafe Test Center, which was named the 2008 ITIL Innovation of the Year. In 2009 Dr. Turbyfill was inducted into the Women in Technology International's (WITI) Hall of Fame for her longstanding commitment to create opportunities for women in technology careers.

AgilePDX Westside (morning) - Dave Harrison -"Real World Software Development"
Roll back
| description |
At Tech Ed 2012, the biggest change over the previous years had to do with ALM and agile development â it seemed like one out of every four classes dealt with Agile in one way or another. What is all the fuss about â and how can our team use the best tools to keep developers and BAâs humming and business owners happy?
In this talk Dave will explore his team's two-year long experience with Agile development at Columbia Sportswear Company, including experiences with TFS and other tools.
Along the way weâll cover:
⢠The Software Development Hierarchy of Needs (from a great post by Scott Hanselman)
⢠Our experiences with MVC, TDD, and Azure
⢠Why the Spanish Armada didnât work and Apollo 13 did â the Cone of Death
⢠The dirty little secret behind scrum â hint, itâs not a magic bullet
⢠Jealousy as a proactive emotion
⢠Save the poker for Vegas
⢠Managing priorities across software development teams in one list
Speaker: Dave Harrison is the Development Manager and .Net Lead Developer at Columbia Sportswear. He has 7 years of Windows and Internet/Web applications development experience. Dave is a certified Scrum Master and agile enthusiast (www.rogueagile.com) |
