update Calagator::Event 1250465027 OTBC Startup Stories: Membean Roll back

description OTBC startups have great stories to tell - and we're going to start telling them in a winter-series of events - starting with Membean. A story of bootstrapping without investors, and the challenges of tackling the K-12 education, helping students expand their vocabulary. We'll be interviewing founders Ragav Satish and Micah Elliott. Membean provides guided, engaging, multimodal vocabulary instruction with an Adaptive Reinforcement Engine that helps students retain what they learn. Their current focus is middle schools and high schools. Their online service is in use at over 180 schools. Size: 4 people. Market: SAAS for K-12 schools. Stage: Revenue producing customer base Learn how to bootstrap, from a startup that is successfully doing that today. On Oct. 22 at OTBC, Ragav Satish and Micah Elliott, founders of Membean, will talk about their challenges and accomplishments in bootstrapping a startup into revenue, with no investor funding. There will be plenty of time for Q and A. How do you start and grow a company without investor funding - and without being independently wealthy? How do you build a team when you have little or no cashflow? How do you fund development? How can you afford to grow the team with sales and marketing skills, when those additions have to be funded by revenue? Membean has done all of that, and is continuing to grow their business without investor funding. We'll explore with the Membean founders Ragav Satish and Micah Elliott how they tackled some of these challenges. Membean provides online vocabulary instruction with an Adaptive Reinforcement Engine that helps students retain what they learn. Their current focus is middle schools and high schools. Their customers include more than 180 schools. Size: 4 people. Market: SAAS for K-12 schools. Stage: Revenue producing customer base

description Are you a talented developer, designer, or care about the well-being of your life and the city of Portland? PSU-TAO Cleanweb Hack are hosting the first CleanWeb Hack and will bring together developers, designers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and students to illuminate the opportunities for creating new efficiency in energy, buildings, waste and water. The event will bring together talent and technology resources to explore the intersection of information technology (web, social, mobile) and issues related to climate change and global resource constraints focusing on energy, waster, transportation and sustainability. This will be one of the first hackathons in the country to take advantage of the U.S. Department of Energy’s new API for its building performance database. Additional DOE datasets that will be available to attendees include datasets pertaining to energy, solar, and utility rates. The Cleanweb Hack represents the first of what will likely be a regular series of collaborative efforts between the tech industry and academia in Oregon. This is also a "tech laboratory” where students will work alongside professionals to apply their knowledge. Participants will spend one day hacking in small teams to create radical new solutions across key Cleanweb sectors and will present their creations to a panel of judges. update Calagator::Event 1250464953 PDXNode presentation night Roll back

description Monthly presentation night! Snacks and drinks will be provided by Mozilla. This month: * Ben Acker will share about some awesome drawings and tales of Nodejs within Walmart Labs. * Chris Dickinson will be sharing his talk on Javascript at Urban Airship. * there's still room for a lightning talk! This would be a great opportunity for someone to share a module they've found particularly useful or heinous. Please contact an organizer if you're interested. It will be a nice variety of topics and level of talks. If anyone is interested, we could also take discussions to post-talk drinks nearby. Maybe even hack a little. Monthly presentation night! update Calagator::Event 1250464788 PDXScala Monthly Meeting Roll back

description Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group! As we've been doing for some months now, the first hour of tonight's meeting will be oriented towards people who are new to Scala. If you have questions you'd like to ask about general usage, specific libraries, or overall understanding of the ecosystem, we'll be here to help you find your way. For everyone else, we'll have plenty of extra time tonight for any other discussions and topics, so if you have something you'd like to talk about or code you'd like to show, come prepared! We'll have pizza here at 6, so come early if you're hungry. We look forward to see you all there! Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. Proposed subjects so far for tonight: * Rob says he's been working on a port of [attoparsec](http://hackage.haskell.org/package/attoparsec) (a fast Haskell parser combinator library) that he could demo for a bit. * Leif has been incorporating a [writer monad](https://gist.github.com/LeifW/6861812) into some [RDF->JSON code](https://github.com/LeifW/Treeify/blob/master/src/main/scala/Treeify.scala) he's updating to output JSON-LD.
