Nerd Nite #9 Nerd Nite #9 â Cataclysms on the Columbia: The Great Missoula Floods
Roll back
| description |
Tuesday, November 12, 2013
Nerd Nite is a monthly event that strives for an inebriated, salacious, yet deeply academic vibe. We aim to entertain, educate, elucidate, enlighten, and other things that start with âe.â Be there and be square.
When: Tuesday, November 12, 2013, doors at 6:00pm, event at 7:00pm
Where: Mission Theater, 1624 NW Glisan, Portland
Cost: $8.00 suggested cover at the door, or available online
This Nerd Nite will feature just one speaker, the unforgettable Scott Burns!
One of the greatest sets of geological events to ever have occurred in North America was the Missoula Floods. Occurring as many as 40 times during the last ice age, the floods were caused by waters released from ancient Lake Missoula that scoured the Columbia River basin, carved out the Columbia River Gorge, and swept across at least 16,000 square miles of the Pacific Northwest. At this Nerd Nite, Scott Burns, PhD, http://geology.pdx.edu/node/67, professor of geology and past chair of the Department of Geology at PSU, will focus on the incredible story of discovery and development of the idea of the floods by J Harlen Bretz and will discuss the effect of the floods on the landscape of the Willamette Valley and the area around us.
*A note on the suggested cover: Nerd Nite is completely supported by money collected at the door. We are committed to offering education opportunities to adults who want to learn, so if $8 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can.

Maseeh College of Engineering and Computer Science (Maseeh College) students take advantage of PSU's proximity and access to technology-oriented companies in the metropolitan area.
Maseeh College works hard to create Scholarship and Internship programs for its undergraduate and graduate students.
Maseeh College has a rich history that has evolved over a 45-year period, paralleling the growth of the high-technology industry in Oregon. Consequently, Maseeh College has become the leading supplier of new employees for companies such as Intel Corporation and Tektronix, Inc.
Maseeh College's well-equipped research laboratories train students for the fast-changing technology and engineering marketplace. Maseeh College growth plans included improving educational and research facilities by building a new engineering building in 2006, part of the Northwest Center for Engineering, Science and Technology.

Monthly presentation night!
Snacks and drinks will be provided by Mozilla.
This month:
* Ben Acker will share about some awesome drawings and tales of Nodejs within Walmart Labs.
* Chris Dickinson will be sharing his talk on Javascript at Urban Airship.
* there's still room for a lightning talk! This would be a great opportunity for someone to share a module they've found particularly useful or heinous. Please contact an organizer if you're interested.
It will be a nice variety of topics and level of talks. If anyone is interested, we could also take discussions to post-talk drinks nearby. Maybe even hack a little. |

Northwest Regional Women in Computing 2013
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
The Northwest Regional Women in Computing (NWrWIC) Celebration focuses on empowering and encouraging women to enter the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, particularly computer science. The conference brings together students from universities and high schools, with industry leaders from the private and public sectors to engage and inspire the next generation of leaders to play an active role in shaping the future of computing and technology.
The 2013 conference, to be held in October, is the second annual event. Our mission is to encourage women to pursue and build successful careers in computing and technology by improving their educational experience and engagement with industry leaders. With less than 30% of STEM jobs filled by women, the industry is lacking full representation of the world’s views. This lack of diversity inhibits industry’s innovation potential. Our effort recognizes and empowers women who are part of the computing industry and celebrates all who are supporters of them.
If you are the following, then you would want to come:
College professionals,
industry leaders,
Job seekers,
STEM/Technology leaders,
Thought leaders,
Professors,
Teachers,
High School STEM students(must be accompanied by guardian)
Register for an early bird special:
http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3872721414?ref=elink
Top companies and universities will be present

MaptimePDX!
Roll back
| description |
Come join your fellow geo nerds for some map hacking, geographic learning, beer drinking, and conversation having! MaptimePDX is a brand new, map-focused hack and learn event, modeled after the hugely successful weekly San Francisco meetup, [MaptimeSF](http://www.meetup.com/Maptime-SF/).
At our first hack day, we will be working through an exercise to edit and contribute to collaborative geographic datasets using GitHub and [geojson.io](http://geojson.io). There will also be a table for folks to come and hack on and talk their own projects with others!
This inaugural MaptimePDX event is being held in conjunction with [WhereCampPDX 6](http://calagator.org/events/1250464212), an unconference for all things geospatial.
**Beginners especially welcome!** Bring a laptop if you can. See you there! |

AEPDX & COLORCUBIC PRESENT: REEL REVIEW / KONTRAST
Roll back

Motion graphics and visual effects artists are converging on Disjecta Thursday October 10th during Design Week Portland. We have two events crammed into one evening with the Kontrast after party hosted by Colorcubic & Nueva Forma following the Demo Reel Review. Kontrast is an audiovisual electronic music event and creative social mixer; a chance for contemporary performance to move away from routine clubs and into more eclectic and ornate settings where the artistry of the medium can be better explored and appreciated.
Join AEPDX with our panel of 3 esteemed judges as we review submitted animation and motion reels from local studios and artists and give creative feedback. The evening will showcase a number of demo reels from individuals and agencies from around Portland. , where a demo reel is played for the audience then in a rapid-fire type of response, panelists provide constructive feedback to the creator. The event is a chance for the community to come together and show off some of the jaw dropping work done right here in Portland. The audience will vote for their favorite reels and we will award a few huge prizes to the winner.

Cloudability Fall Happy Hour
Roll back
| description |

Summer has left the building, football has taken center stage and now we're researching who has the best hay ride in town....All that's left is a cinnamon brown farmer tan, a trunk full of river rafts and too many tomatoes from the garden! Autumn is haunting us with those oh so familiar gray days and a halo of chilly drizzle. Drop by the office for a beer, 'buch and some snacks---word on the street the Dump Truck is hooking up a line of Cheeseburger dumplings...woot!
Cloudability has a new Sales guy, Andy, a new marketing addition, Arwa and we're in the throes of Trade Show Season---come blow off some steam with us! |

Read the Docs Hackathon
Roll back
| description |
We will gather and hack on Read the Docs all day. If you've never contributed before, this is a good chance since both of the main maintainers (one of which is the original author) will be there.
Read the Docs is written in Python but we could also use front end help in the form of design input and css/javascript.
There will be pizza, snacks, drinks and beer provided by Mozilla to fuel folks. |
