Bayesian Deep Learning

As you know this is more of group discussion meetup where we get together to discuss what we are learning, interested in, stumped by, curious about, etc...
This month I propose we talk about Bayesian Deep Learning and study the materials from Yarin Gal's presentation at MLSS Moscow 2019 http://bdl101.ml
There wont be a presentation. Instead I encourage you to read over the materials, try out some experiments and come share your findings and experiences. I have lots of questions about when/where it is useful and what kind of future it may have. I'm looking forward to hearing your questions and thoughts.
All levels of experience and backgrounds are welcome so don't be shy. We all learn from each other.
Also, if you have ideas for topics you'd like to see in future meetings please let me know. Thanks. |

Portland Linux/Unix Group: Contending With Our Culture of Discouragement
Roll back

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting
Who: You!<br>
What: Contending With Our Culture of Discouragement<br>
Where: PSU, 1900 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, October 3rd, 2019 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
The Free Software/Open Source community appears to be at a crossroads.
A brave woman declared that "enough is enough" with the disturbing statements of a pivotal figure in the community and it rightfully cost that figure a number of prominent positions. Remarkably, she wasn't the first woman to challenge a foundation leader this year and help usher them to the door.
Responses to such confrontations have ranged from false narratives to the proposal of morality-enforcing licenses for software.
One theme however, is the chilling effect that disturbing, and at times unlawful behavior in the community causes, and the efforts to content with it. Why participate in communities with *these* issues? This passive discouragement is often combined with direct discouragement and countless forms of divisiveness.
Yet we press on, and work to resolve these bugs, one by one.
This meeting will be an open forum to share your experiences with discouragement in the free software/open source community. Trolls need not attend but will be educated by a panel of experts if they do.
ATTENTION! Thanks to a new security policy, attendees will need to enter through the 1900 SW 4th entrance, just North of the 1930 SW 4th entrance adjacent to Hawaiian Express, formerly Taco Del Mar:
https://www.google.com/maps/place/1900+SW+4th+Ave,+Portland,+OR
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.
Ride shares to the Lucky Lab available
PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. |

We're hosting an unconference focused on finding ways to use AI and machine learning to improve the lives of everyone in the community on October 19, 2018 in Portland, Oregon.
Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) are predicted to affect aspects of every business, government agency and organization. In order to understand, better use and control these technologies and changes. We ran a similar event a year and a half ago and everyone got a lot out of it. Many things have changed since then and many issues are the same. Let's figure out where we stand.
This will be a great way to meet others in the community and discuss related topics of interest and concern.
Get your ticket today. There is a small fee that will go towards lunch and supplies. Any extra funds will be donated to a local non-profit. |

Double Header: Migrating Legacy Apps and Accelerating Development with Vuetify
Roll back
| description |

Converting a Legacy Swing-based Application to the Web
The goal: convert a 20-year-old legacy Swing- and Java-based fat client application to the web. The constraint: insufficient time and budget to do it in one step. The solution: incrementally evolve the application by rewriting one UI (of several) in Vue and embedding that UI within the Swing environment via the JxBrowser Chrome-based browser utility.
Mark Linehan has multiple decades of software development experience in many different programming languages, principally with IBM. He currently does both front-end development in Vue and JavaScript, and back-end work in Java. The project described here is continuing at Daimler Trucks North America.
Accelerating Application Development with the Vuetify Component Library
This talk will give you an overview of the Vuetify component library and how it can free developers from coding simple web and form components so they can focus on application logic.
Michael's work in technology spans more than 30 years, two continents, and many different disciplines, from development to marketing. Although most of his work involves full stack development, his current position focuses on front end web and email for Yes Marketing, an email-centered agency. Personal projects include a stable of travel-related web sites, and these provide a test bed for new skills and technology. The prototype app he will present today is part of his effort to expand his skill set with Vue.js
Schedule:

6:30pm "Converting a Legacy Swing-based Application to the Web"

Testing Vue Applications

Testing Vue applications can be quick and painless. In this presentation, Grant will show you how to test small parts of Vue apps using vue-test-utils and Jest. By the end of the presentation, you will be able to:
- Know the difference between unit and end-to-end tests
- Learn how to write good unit tests (BDD)
- know how to spy and stub network requests
- See how to reach deep inside your Vue application to control its behavior during tests
In short - less than one hour spent at this meetup will save you days, if not weeks of testing your application using any other tool.
Grant Stampfli is a software engineer interested in front and back end development, especially in using JavaScript (and its flavors) across the entire stack. He works at a startup called Fleet Logistics, making the world a better place by digitalizing the freight forwarding industry.

Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

THIS MONTH:
Measuring the Right Things
We’ve moved from waking someone up if a disk passed some arbitrary threshold to only paging off-hours when the business is impacted. Our lives have improved immensely because we learned how to measure the right things. Let’s take some of the lessons we’ve learned from monitoring and alerting and see if we can apply them to how we measure the humans in our systems. From who we see and don’t see as leaders to which candidates we think have the potential to be excellent contributors, let’s look at how we’ve been measuring humans and see if we are evaluating the right things.

Tiffany Longworth is a Site Reliability Engineer at Zapproved. She loves working at the intersection of systems and humans and cares deeply about ensuring systems work *for* the humans in them, not *on* the humans in them. She likes using her background as a Marine, her training as an English teacher, is a die hard karaoke-ist, and uses cat gifs as much as possible.

DevOps: 2009 to 2019
In 2009, two Flickr engineers gave a presentation at O'Reilly's Velocity conference. The presentation is regarded as one of the seminal presentations in the DevOps movement. We will revisit Flickr’s engineering practices and discuss how DevOps has evolved over the past ten years.

Join your comrade Rustaceans at the Portland Rust Hack Night!
An evening of Rust hacking and unstructured discussion at Mozilla's Portland office. All welcome, from beginners to experts.
Among other things, we'll have a show of hands for people looking for help on Rust projects, and people interested in volunteering on a project, to see if we can't pair some folks up. If you've got a project, now's the time to get it into shape for collaboration!
There will be food! Let us know beforehand if you have any dietary restrictions. |

Part hackathon, part geek social, these biweekly meetings are a time for you to come join others for insight, inspiration or just insanity.
Bring your toys for others to see, or come see what others have been painstakingly chipping away at in their spare time.
Whether it's code or chips, hacking of all sorts is encouraged. But we also like to hear your crazy ideas, so please come join us and bring your willingness to share your brilliance.
p.s. This event is open to everyone, dork or robot. No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |

Thursdays are open house night here at CTRL-H. Jon and Melinda are available during this time to give guided tours, answer questions and show you all that the hackerspace has to offer.
We don't have an opening ceremony or any formal meeting. This is a time for you to eavesdrop on other peoples projects and get support on a project that you may need help with. Bring your laptop, projects, inventions, your technical toys and your broken microwave to CTRL-H and hack with friends. |

PDX Exploit Workshop
Roll back

Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?
PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.
p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |
