Roll back
description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-presents-february-happy-hour-networking-event-tickets-89647479023] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for Happy Hour at PGE on February 18th!
We are pausing to recognize Black History Month at our February Happy Hour at PGE. To get people talking about this, our conversation prompt for the event will be “What does acknowledging black history mean for me?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30pm to share important announcements and showcase members of our community.
Hazel Valdez and Dawn Mott will be our emcees for the evening.
A representative from our host company PGE will share what they do and what job opportunities are available at the company
A representative from Black United Fund of Oregon will tell us about the work they are doing in our community.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:00 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

Join us for Happy Hour at PGE on February 18th!
At our February Happy Hour we will be honoring a local legend here in Portland: Donna Hammond, one of Oregon’s first black female electricians. Ms. Hammond has lived a tremendous life, having dealt with significant cultural isolation within her industry.
The theme of the evening will be “Isolation at Work.” To get the conversation flowing, the conversation prompt will be “Have you ever felt isolated at work?”
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 pm to share important announcements and showcase members of our community.
Hazel Valdez and Dawn Mott will be our emcees for the evening.
A representative from our host company PGE will share what they do and what job opportunities are available at the company
Donna Hammond will share her story and highlight a local organization that is making a difference in Portland.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected.
A PDXWIT volunteer table, where community members can learn about volunteer opportunities that exist within the organization.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:00 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends

PDXPUG: Interacting with databases as API's
Roll back
description |

Speaker: Alex Theodore
As a CTO I saw everything that went into and came out of the web development process, from the "client needs" to the source-controlled code. But being skilled in database development showed me time and time again that databases (and their architecture) were often sidelined treated as after-thoughts and often times served as little more than flexible storage spaces. Yet, their contents were the very essence of value for the process/client/company being served. This strange inversion of priorities led me to develop a way of looking at databases as "outside" the application and ultimately to interacting with them as API's. In my talk I'll be presenting this concept and showing with simple rules and examples how it can be done.
Bio:
I was the product and technology founder of Fracture.me and CTO up until 2018 where I developed the manufacturing processes and ERP software that powered our production process. That got me deeply involved in database work, especially with architecture and process design and optimization. Now I work part time as a database consultant and part time building modern, minimalistic furniture for my new (small) company MillFinish.com.

We'll meet in the Ecotrust Alder Room. Enter the atrium of the Ecotrust building from either side. Feel free to bring food and/or beer up with you from Hot Lips or Laughing Planet! Walk up the inside stairs along the East Wall or take the elevator to the second floor. The Alder Room entrance is right behind the Ecotrust front desk. We'll have the gate open for at least the first part of the meeting. If it's not open, call Tanya at 503-475-7833 or just yell through the gate at us :-) |

Drawing Follow Along
Roll back
description |

In this Meetup, we'll perform an art follow along. This will help remove the intimidation giving you the confidence you can draw. In this session, we'll cover basics such as drawing with shapes, gestures, lights, and shadows. We'll be drawing instead of painting, so the only thing you'll need is paper and a pencil. I'll have extra if you need them.
Families welcome.
Be inspired!

Undefeated LSU and undefeated Clemson meet in New Orleans on Monday night to decide the 2019 College Football Playoff National Championship. Dabo Swinney and his Clemson Tigers are seeking the program's third national championship in four seasons, but the top-ranked LSU Tigers stand in the way.
Watch Live Free: http://bit.ly/fbschampionshiplive
Behind Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Joe Burrow, LSU has returned to the sport's biggest stage for the first time in 12 years. Burrow enters the contest with 5,208 yards and 55 touchdowns, sitting just three scores shy of tying the Football Bowl Subdivision's single-season record.
LSU will attempt to hand an elite signal-caller his first career loss.
Trevor Lawrence is 25-0 as a starter at Clemson, which is riding a 29-game winning streak as the reigning champions.
Bleacher Report has you covered with all important details for the contest, highlighting everything from viewing information and season recaps to NFL prospects, injury reports and key storylines.
Burrow ranks second nationally in yards per game (372) and attempt (10.9), and he leads the FBS with 55 passing scores. The senior has also scampered for 311 yards and four touchdowns, adding a valuable mobile element to the attack.
His favorite targets are Ja'Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson, who've each caught an FBS-high 18 touchdowns. Chase has 75 receptions for 1,559 yards, while Jefferson boasts 102 grabs for 1,434 yards. For good measure, each of Terrace Marshall Jr., Thaddeus Moss and Clyde Edwards-Helaire has 40-plus catches.
Early on, LSU unveiled the revamped scoring attack to great success while surviving a trip to Texas. The scheduled stiffened in October, but the Tigers held off Florida and Auburn before earning a marquee win at Alabama to open November.
LSU closed the regular season with three comfortable wins, smacked Georgia in the SEC Championship Game and crushed Oklahoma 63-28 in the Peach Bowl.
Clemson ran all over Georgia Tech in the opener before navigating a less-than-stellar September. Lawrence threw five interceptions in the first three contests, and the Tigers needed to stop a two-point conversion with 1:17 remaining to avoid an upset at North Carolina.
That scare in Chapel Hill basically served as the turning point.
After an idle weekend, Clemson became a monster. The Tigers notched eight straight wins of 30-plus points, ending with a 62-17 triumph over Virginia to win the program's fifth straight ACC title.
While always a net positive despite his interceptions, Lawrence shook the sophomore slump midway through the year. He's thrown for 1,897 yards and 22 touchdowns with zero picks in the last seven games, adding 327 yards and three scores as a runner. |

Agenda:
