Secrets of Test-Driven Development with James Shore (Rescheduled!)
Roll back
description |
PNSQC, in association with PDX Veterans in Technology, is pleased to present "Secrets of Test-Driven Development" with James Shore.
Test-Driven Development (TDD) is an essential part of agile software development. Without it, codebases lose the flexibility they need to change direction and respond to new business needs.
But what is TDD, exactly? And how does it work? In this brief introduction, veteran TDD practitioner James Shore will show you what TDD is, how it works, and why it works. You’ll leave with new insights about this key software development practice.
This event will be hosted by PDX Veterans in Technology with networking and food sponsored by PNSQC.
The agenda is:
6 - 6:30 Networking & Food
6:30 - 6:35 Quick intro to event , thank sponsors.
6:35 - 7:05 Presentation
7:05 - 8:00 Q & A, Socialize
8p - Good night
James Shore teaches, writes, and consults on Agile development processes with an emphasis on technical excellence. He is a recipient of the Agile Alliance's Gordon Pask Award for Contributions to Agile Practice, co-author of The Art of Agile Development, host of “Let's Code: Test-Driven JavaScript,” and co-creator of the Agile Fluency® Model.
InfoQ has named him one of the “most influential people in Agile.” You can find his screencasts at letscodejavascript.com and essays at jamesshore.com.
Moss Drake will represent PNSQC to talk about the call for abstracts and the conference this year. |

Remote Open Source Contribution Night - Project & Issue Searching
Roll back
description |

→ |
Have a free night on Wednesday? Why not use it to contribute to an open source project?
With the (you-know-the-reason) forcing events to cancel, join us as we collaborate on an open source project.
This first session will be mainly a discussion as we hunt for a good project to take a look at--perhaps something people find useful and necessary but in desperate need of fixing.
Once we do we'll crawl the issues list to find one that would be a good collaboration issue.
The next sessions we'll assign roles and design a solution. |

A Complete Walkthrough: Setting Up Facebook Ads with Shopify
Roll back
description |

***Registration through Zoom https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_gjNoDEEqS56rQ3eGTx3GVg is required to gain entry to this event ***
Are you interested in generating more traffic and sales for your Shopify store during these challenging times?
You’ve probably heard that now is a great time to reach your potential customers with social advertising, with more people at home and using social media than ever before (Facebook is reporting a 70% usage increase!) But if you haven’t run social ads before, or have tried but hit roadblocks, you might be hesitant to get started.
We’ll walk you through each step of the building and launching a best-practice social advertising campaign for your Shopify store with expert guidance from Brett Fish, Founder, and Principal at SCOPO Marketing, a Facebook Marketing Partner agency. In this comprehensive walk-through, Brett will show you how to structure your campaigns, build targeted audiences, and create effective ads that connect with your customers and drive more traffic and sales for your store.
***One note - prior to the meetup (and ASAP) you'll need to create and have a Facebook Business Manager account in place (which you can do by going to https://business.facebook.com/ and following the steps, or following this help article https://www.facebook.com/business/help/1612355968988019). We’ll be walking through the Business Manager, and often Facebook won’t allow you to take certain steps unless you have an existing account for at least a few days.
Brett is the Founder and Principal at SCOPO Marketing, a Facebook Agency Partner and Facebook Marketing Partner for Technical Services that helps businesses generate more awareness, engagement, and revenue with targeted social media advertising. A Facebook-Certified professional, he has developed social marketing and advertising strategies that have generated millions of dollars in new revenue for his clients like Lucky Brand Clothing, Pieology Pizzeria, and La Colombe Coffee. |

Professors make their students write essays, because essays have become a good measure of their academic success. It is through essays that professors try to determine how well their students have learned the material. Essays give professors a better opportunity to monitor their students' progress. Based on the results, they are willing to provide assistance to improve their students' grades. Unfortunately, such responsible professors are rare. Most tutors use essay writing simply to grade and fail their students. Thus, if you do not understand the subject or hate the topic, you can do nothing about it. |

POSTPONED TO APR 7 - Agile Fluency® Game night
Roll back
description |
*Postponed to April 7 due to Coronavirus concerns. Doublecheck on April 7 in case it's postponed further.*
Come play the Agile Fluency Game! You’ll gain new insights into the benefits and trade-offs of adopting agile practices—and you’ll have a great time doing it.
The Agile Fluency Game authentically simulates 2½ years on a software development team. It was developed so experiments in the game lead to new insights about your real-world options. As you play the game, you’ll make decisions about which agile practices to adopt. Of course, you have to deliver features, too! Or what’s the point?
This is a great experience for agile team members interested in learning more about their options; managers and leaders wanting to better understand agile development; and people who enjoy modern board games such as Settlers of Catan and Ticket to Ride.

CORONAVIRUS NOTE: We've been asked if we still plan to hold this event given the concerns about Coronavirus. We DO plan to hold the event, with the following precautions:
* Attendance is limited to 16 people. (First come, first served.)
* We will not be serving food or drink or allowing food in the game room. If you bring food, we have a separate dining area where you can eat.
* Hand sanitizer and tissues will be available. Restrooms for washing hands are right across the hall.
* Do not attend if you're sick or have flu symptoms. |

*Cancelled due to Coronavirus.*

Panel and Discussion on Working Remote and Creating Community
As the COVID-19 situation evolves, many of our offices have issued voluntary, recommended, or mandatory work-from-home guidance. While some of us already work from home and some of us are new to it, we are all adjusting to new situations with partners, kids, pets and housemates. We are also readjusting to a new way of socialization with virtual coffees and happy hours.
Our panel will discuss their tactics for working at home or remotely. We will talk about how we have adjusted schedules and environments to accommodate kids and other folks at home with us. Then we will discuss ideas on how to create community and stay connected while practicing social distancing. We will then open it up for Q&A and discussion. We also want to hear from you, since this is a new situation for all of us and none of us have all the answers.

Women Who Code Portland - Working Remote and Creating Community

The good news is there are solutions. In this presentation learn:
-- What sexual harassment is and how to identify it in your environment.
-- How to respond as an ally when you see bullying or abuse in your work environment.
-- The three key things you can do to create not just a safe, but a healthy workplace culture for yourself, no matter what.
Agenda:
5:30 pm - Doors open / networking
6:00 pm - Introductions
6:15 pm - Presentation and Q&A
7:00 pm - Networking
7:30 pm - Event Ends

A: Yes.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?

A: YES—however, it is not free. The on-site parking is in Pacific Center Garage, which is located in the basement floors of our building, The entrance ramp is on SW Taylor, right-hand side of the street, between SW 6th & Broadway.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: Before 6:00pm, both Pacific Center entrances are available (SW 6th Avenue or Broadway).
After 6:00pm, for attendees who do not use the parking garage, Pacific Center access is through the main SW 6th Avenue building entrance. The building is locked to visitors after 6:00pm.
For attendees who are using the Pacific Center parking garage (this applies to cyclists who will lock their bikes in the garage, too). The parking garage is located on B1 and B2. A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Roll back
description |
Alchemy welcomes anyone interested in our program, Portland's most accelerated boot camp program to join us to learn about our program! We are currently teaching our program remotely, and live with our in person instruction by experienced software developers. So, we are doing our Open House remotely too
You need to launch Zoom on your computer and join us here: https://zoom.us/meeting/register/uJ0ud-ihqzMrpz79B42j6m1ksL1KxvZJqg
We look forward to meeting you!
ABOUT ALCHEMY CODE LAB: Learn from industry professionals in a collaborative environment with in-person instruction from experienced software developers. They share their knowledge and practices to enter the field at a more advanced level.
Be supported by teaching assistants and career coaching. A low instructional staff to student ratio of 6 to 1 means you have access to the guidance and help you need to successfully complete our rigorous training. Get prepared and ready to network and connect with the companies that interest you and need your technical skills and experiences.

PDXWIT Presents: April Happy Hour Virtual Networking Event
Roll back
description |
***Registration required at: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_DLZno98GSwyPjykrNI-LBQ. ***
Join PDXWIT and Cambia Health via Zoom for our April Happy Hour. We will not be convening in person but we are creating a dynamic and interactive Happy Hour that will allow us to connect from a safe social distance. The theme of the event will be New Normal and the conversation prompt will be What are you doing to maintain a sense of normalcy in your life right now?
We are excited to have lightning speakers Zhou Fang and Kari Fass to share tips and tricks to maintain well being and productivity during this time. We even have a surprise guest inviting us into their home for a tour of their home office.
Just as we do in an in-person happy hour, we will have a short segment at 5:30 p.m. to share important announcements and showcase members of our community. A representative from our host company Cambia Health will share what they do and what job opportunities are available at the company.
Agenda:
5:00 p.m. - Zoom Webinar Open / Virtual Networking / Sponsor Roll Call
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
5:45 p.m. - More Virtual Networking
6:00 p.m. - Event ends
