Portland Java User Group
Roll back

This month's topic: Using GWT to write iPhone Web Apps in Java
For the Java coder, GWT is currently as close as it gets to a multi-platform solution for web apps. After a quick GWT review, we will code about in the world of web apps you can run on your desktop and mobile phone, written in Java. This will be a superview presentation touching on GWT, GWT mobile libs and HTML5.
----------
Speaker: Jon Batcheller
Jon is one of the founders of PJUG, writing Java apps since 1995. He has written Java programs for a wide variety of applications from IC Design, circuit board layout, hardware/software co-design, assisted living facilit management, to a POS system for the two bars he owns.
----------
PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building).

PLUG Advanced Topics April Meeting
IPv6 Networking with Ted Mittelstaedt: Part 1
The first in a multi-part series on IPv6 networking by Ted Mittelstaedt, the author of The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide.
Part 1: Theory & management & ISP routing, as well as current events in the IPv6 realm. For example, did you know that Nortel just sold Microsoft a huge chunk of IPv4 legacy addresses for something like 7 million dollars? This has really turned the tables on the game. Up until that happened the thought in the community was that the large ISP's would be the biggest pushers of IPv6 deployment. But this is an early indicator of what's going to happen. The large ISPs are going to spend millions in vacuuming every scrap of IPv4 out of all the corners on the Internet before they will start pushing their users to go to IPv6. That is a serious problem for any small ISP that does not have a stock of IPv4 because they will be run out of numbers and new customers will not be interested in their IPv6 offerings as long as the large ISPs still are handing IPv4 out.

Windows Phone 7 Hackathon
Roll back
| description |
<p>This event is follow-on from the Windows Phone 7 Unleashed Events that were held last fall. The format is less structured, and more hands-on. Whether you need help developing, architecting, pricing, integrating ads, or are just getting started, this is the place to be. Our primary goal is to help you get your app ready and submitted to the marketplace. Weâre happy to share lessons learned from our own experiences (e.g. Alchemy and Soak Your Head). If you find yourself to have been inspired by MIX and just want to get together and hack a cool app, weâre more than happy to jump in and help you with that as well.</p>
<p>This is the place to be, whether you're new and want to learn, or want the latest info on what's coming in the "Mango" release.</p>
<p>NOTE: Devices will be available for testing your apps.<br />NOTE: A light lunch and snacks will be provided.</p>

[Beer and Blog] Paul Bingham: Friend to All, Giant of Heart
Roll back
| description |
As most of you know, our beloved film/tech/train/jazz/labyrinth/werewolf/volunteering-loving Renaissance man Paul Bingman passed away from cancer on April 3, 2011. A private memorial in his honor is planned for this Sunday, April 17, at the <a href="http://portlandartmuseum.org/">Portland Art Museum</a>âs Whitsell Auditorium. All are welcome (There will be chocolate! And a labyrinth!) but you must RSVP because there is a capacity cap. You can do that here: <a href="http://friendsofpaulbingman.eventbrite.com/">http://friendsofpaulbingman.eventbrite.com/</a>
What you might not know is that the organization planning the memorial--they appropriately call themselves Friendâs of Paul Bingman--is raising funds to cover the expenses related to the memorial. They are also raising money to donate to two of his favorite organizations in his name: <a href="http://www.nwfilm.org/">The Northwest Film Center</a> and <a href="http://www.trinity-episcopal.org/08TrinitySite/sections/parish_life/labyrinth.html">The Trinity Labyrinth Guild</a>. You can donate money via this website: <a href="http://paulbingman.chipin.com/memorial-event-for-paul-bingman">http://paulbingman.chipin.com/memorial-event-for-paul-bingman</a>
Because Paulâs interests were so varied and vast (and so are the friends he made) the Friendâs of Paul Bingman group is asking all of us help spread the word about his memorial. Not all of the lives he touched are Internet savvy, so they might not know about the memorial. They might not even know that Paul has passed. So, if youâre part of a group that Paul had been involved with, we ask that you share the news of his death and invite anyone who may have experienced his bear hugs and kindness to RSVP and attend the memorial.
This Fridayâs Beer and Blog meetup is dedicated to the memory of our dedicated friendly soul Paul, the man everyone loved so much. Weâll be accepting donations to turn over to the Friendâs of Paul Bingman group. And weâll be sharing stories about the giant with the giant heart. We hope to see you there. I know Paul will be, in spirit. |

PDXPUG: Distributing Extensions on PGXN
Roll back
| description |
This month's meeting marks the fourth installment in our "Founders Series"..
When: 7-9pm Thu Apr 21, 2011
Where: FreeGeek
Who: David Wheeler
What: Distributing Extensions on PGXN
So you've solved a common problem in PostgreSQL, a serious pain point that lots of other people could take advantage of. You want to open-source the code, and would like to package it up and distribute it where people can find it, read its docs, and download and install it.
The newest destination for distributing PostgreSQL extensions is PGXN, the PostgreSQL Extension network. PGXN offers a central index of PostgreSQL extensions and their documentation, making it easy for people to find an install extensions.
How do you optimize your extension distribution for maximum PGXN exposure? By careful packaging, thorough documentation, and simple installation. Join me for an overview of how best to achieve that â including how to build extensions compatible with PostgreSQL 9.1's improved extension support.
Beer afterwards at the Lucky Lab. See you there! |

Great software comes from getting your team’s best ideas into the product. Jim McCarthy, who led the legendary turnaround of the Visual C++ group at Microsoft, left Microsoft in 1996 to create a team dynamics laboratory to figure out how to always create a create a high performance team.
The McCarthy lab has focused extensively on this challenge, and has produced 11 rich, precise protocols (called the Core) for making unanimous decisions, supporting quality thinking, strengthening design iterations, and incorporating feedback, emotions, nobility, and passion into products.
Learn about these protocols in this motivating, challenging talk. In just a few minutes, you can pick up the fundamentals of an entirely new class of tool.
• Do you notice too much discussion and arguing and would prefer the best ideas would just get implemented now? –Learn about the Decider Protocol which guarantees unanimous team decisions with accountability and moves the team forward with a bias toward action.
• Do you accept that it is vitally important that you get the opinions of others about the quality of work products but notice that it is consistently painful to give and receive feedback? – Learn about the Perfection Protocol which solves all the problems associated with criticism.
• Do you notice that dumb things consistently happen on your team and everyone seems to lack self-awareness to some degree, including you? – Learn about the Core Commitments which provide a team constitution about commitment and accountability to the team. And learn about the Personal Alignment Protocol which allows each team member to address self-awareness around courage, integrity, passion and other virtuous behaviors.
This event is free and is at our new location, Puppet Labs. It begins at 6:30 pm with pizza, sponsored by PNSQC (Many thanks to both Puppet Labs and PNSQC for supporting agile in Portland).

"Think Smaller: How smaller, lifestyle startups are more likely succeed"
Save the date! This month's speaker is Jason Glaspey. Jason is the Product Manager at UrbanAirship, co-founder of PIE (Portland Incubator Experiment at Weiden+Kennedy) and author of "From Idea to Web Start-up in 21 Days".
Jason has done a number of successful startups and has a number of failures. He's built lifestyle startups from scratch that pay his bills, ran a blog that let him drive a different new car every week, had projects fall flat on their face, and worked in venture-funded companies like UrbanAirship.
Here are some of the things he'll be talking about:
* Defining what Success means
* Being Realistic about exits
* Discussing the failures
* Hiring out developers
* Finding partners
* Shopping out menial tasks
* Retirement means I work on what I want, when I want, with whom I want
The event is being sponsored by Cloudability. Cloudability lets you manage all your cloud billing in one place. Cloudability will be offering early access to its beta launch next month to all attendees (as well as free beer and wine.)
We have a private room upstairs in the Backstage Bar behind the Bagdad Theatre on Hawthorne St.
