create Calagator::Event 1250468150 FUTEL: THE TELEPHONE OF THE FUTURE, TODAY Roll back

description nil At first glance, Futel is nothing more than a collection of payphones installed in publicly accessible locations, no different than the phones found on every street corner. Except one doesn’t have to pay to use them. And if the caller doesn’t have a human to interact with, one will be provided. And there aren’t any payphones around anymore, anyway. Find out what we hope to achieve by starting a free telephone network. We will discuss our spiritual ancestors in the phone phreak and mail artist community, as well as our philosophical background in creating useful and nonuseful devices out of discarded junk, and the importance of retaining skills with obsolete interactive technology.

update Calagator::Event 1250468105 Ruby Book Club Roll back

description Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are reading [Practical Object-Oriented Design in Ruby](http://www.poodr.com) by Sandi Metz. This week we will discuss chapters 7-8. Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Make sure to grab food before. description nil Epicodus is a 20 week, full time, in-person class on programming. You'll learn everything you need to know to get a job as a web developer or build your startup's app. At Epicodus, you'll learn how to build web applications from top to bottom with modern technologies and practices. More importantly than any particular skill, though, you'll learn how to think like a programmer, write good code, and pick up new languages and technologies in this fast-changing industry. We currently offer two courses: one covering PHP, JavaScript, and Drupal, and one covering Ruby, JavaScript, and Rails. Stop in to meet our staff, see the classroom and ask lots of questions. And if you're working on the pre-class homework from learnhowtoprogram.com we can help with that! Check out our FAQ: http://www.epicodus.com/faq.html

description nil Greetings Reagents! We had an awesome meetup at Jama with some great talks. Thanks to everyone that took time from their schedule to come out. We're still looking for some talks from the Portland community. Please let us know if you'd be interested in speaking at this or any future meetings. We have some things brewing for the May meetup that we're excited to share with you next month. Jama Software has graciously offered their event space again for this meeting. Food will also be provided by Idealist.org, please come at 6pm to enjoy some dinner and socializing. Presentations will start promptly at 6:30. == Proposed Schedule == • Observables and React (or, 'Yo dawg, I heard you like reactive programming, so I put some Reactive Extensions in your React so you can react while you React’) - (Ian Irvine) Ian takes us on a tour of JavaScript Observables via RXJS, and explores some potential use cases within the realm of React. • TBA!!! Some members have mentioned wanting to see and hear a talk on a rewrite of an app from [something] to React. Have you done this? You should talk about it! Are you interested in trying this? Try it! Then show us how it went.

create Calagator::Event 1250468134 Science on Tap - Energy from PDX Compost Roll back

description nil DATE: Tuesday, May 5, 2015 TIME: Doors at 6 p.m. event at 7 p.m. LOCATION: Clinton Street Theater, 2522 SE Clinton Street, Portland, Ore. COST: $8 online advance tickets, $10* suggested cover at the door FOOD & DRINK: Beer, wine, popcorn, and snacks available. You’re welcome to bring food into the theater with you. DESCRIPTION: Food scraps comprise almost one-fifth of the amount of material our region sends to landfills every year – enough to fill 5000 long-haul trucks. These food scraps can provide compost, energy and other benefits to communities, but what are the most desirable environmental and economic approaches to dealing with this resource? What impact do food scraps have on the climate, water supplies, energy, and food security? David Allaway, senior policy analyst with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, will share insights for different ways of dealing with food scraps while reducing what we throw away. This event is part of Metro’s Let’s Talk Trash series designed to engage you in discussions that help shape how our region manages its waste in the future. Event Website _________ Science on Tap is a science lecture series where you can sit back, enjoy a pint, and laugh while you learn. Listen to experts talk about the science in your neighborhood and around the world. You don’t have to be a science geek to have fun—all you need is a thirst for knowledge! *A note on the suggested cover at the door: Science on Tap is mostly supported by money collected at the door. It is committed to offering educational opportunities to adults who want to learn, so if $10 is a hardship for you, please come anyway and donate what you can.

Others you’re one of many travelers, sometimes by choice and sometimes by force. Regardless, how can you make the change journey successful? April Mills will discuss the important difference between driving people and driving change. Then she’ll describe four archetypes of change journeys and strategies to make every one more successful. Come listen and learn quick tips to improve your change and the changes around you. <h3>Bio</h3> April led a guiding coalition for change at the U.S. Navy Naval Shipyard in Puget Sound based on Dr. John Kotter’s Leading Change 8-step model. She has a passion for creating positive change, highlighting how anyone can drive change for themselves and for their organizations and communities. April has struggled with and fought against the inertia and bureaucracy of large entrenched organizations and has practical advice for change agents based on the lessons she has learned. Today she is a Change Coach and Community Steward for Intel Corporation. <h3>A Special Treat from PNSQC</h3> Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza and pop provided by PNSQC beginning at 5:30 pm. PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality.
