At first glance, Futel is nothing more than a collection of payphones installed in publicly accessible locations, no different than the phones found on every street corner. Except one doesn’t have to pay to use them. And if the caller doesn’t have a human to interact with, one will be provided. And there aren’t any payphones around anymore, anyway.
Find out what we hope to achieve by starting a free telephone network. We will discuss our spiritual ancestors in the phone phreak and mail artist community, as well as our philosophical background in creating useful and nonuseful devices out of discarded junk, and the importance of retaining skills with obsolete interactive technology. |

ClojureBridge Workshop for Women in Software

This free workshop will be hosted by Puppet Labs and Simple in Portland, Oregon. This workshop is open to anyone who identifies as a woman, genderqueer, genderfluid, or genderfree regardless of gender presentation or assigned sex at birth. It is suitable for complete beginner to intermediate programmers who have no previous experience of the Clojure programming language.
In this workshop, we'll take you through building a sample app using Clojure. We'll meet up Friday night at the Simple offices in the Pearl to install all of the software you need, and then spend Saturday at the Puppet Labs offices in SW learning and writing code. There will be dinner provided at the Friday installfest, and breakfast and lunch provided at the Saturday workshop. Each participant needs to bring their own computer with fairly recent Mac, Linux or Windows installation. If you have questions about your hardware, email one of the organizers before the event! |

DESCRIPTION:
Food scraps comprise almost one-fifth of the amount of material our region sends to landfills every year – enough to fill 5000 long-haul trucks. These food scraps can provide compost, energy and other benefits to communities, but what are the most desirable environmental and economic approaches to dealing with this resource? What impact do food scraps have on the climate, water supplies, energy, and food security?
David Allaway, senior policy analyst with the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, will share insights for different ways of dealing with food scraps while reducing what we throw away.
This event is part of Metro’s Let’s Talk Trash series designed to engage you in discussions that help shape how our region manages its waste in the future.

<h3>Abstract</h3>
Some changes you start. Others you’re one of many travelers, sometimes by choice and sometimes by force. Regardless, how can you make the change journey successful? April Mills will discuss the important difference between driving people and driving change. Then she’ll describe four archetypes of change journeys and strategies to make every one more successful. Come listen and learn quick tips to improve your change and the changes around you.
<h3>Bio</h3>
April led a guiding coalition for change at the U.S. Navy Naval Shipyard in Puget Sound based on Dr. John Kotter’s Leading Change 8-step model. She has a passion for creating positive change, highlighting how anyone can drive change for themselves and for their organizations and communities. April has struggled with and fought against the inertia and bureaucracy of large entrenched organizations and has practical advice for change agents based on the lessons she has learned. Today she is a Change Coach and Community Steward for Intel Corporation.

PDX OpenStack Hackathon
Bring ideas for items you want to hack on and each morning we will break out into groups to hack on them.
This is a two day unconference like sprint for openstack developers. We will focus on upstream development.
At the beginning of each day we will propose topics in an unconference style and will pick things to hack on for the rest of the day.
When: March 26th and 27th, 9am - 5pm
Location: Portland; 1900 SW 4th Ave Room 8601. This is on the Portland State University campus.
Lunch/food: There are a number of food carts across from the building that have delicious lunch in all dietary formats.
Social events: We have not planned anything formal, but will probably do something after the hack day on Thursday.
