create Calagator::Event 1250472118 PDXWIT Presents Intro to Bitcoin, Blockchain, Cryptocurrency Roll back

description nil Want to learn how Bitcoin and Ethereum work, how cryptography plays a key role in securing funds, or how a network of untrusted computers guessing random numbers quadrillions of times per second adds security to the blockchain? Join Scott Bigelow in an introduction to the blockchain and some common blockchain-based applications. New technologies, such as the blockchain and Ethereum, can provide new opportunities in the startup-rich ecosystem of Portland. Additionally, understanding these revolutionary new design principles can help illuminate new ways of designing your own systems. No previous working knowledge of cryptography or other supporting technologies necessary, this will be a ground-up introduction. Agenda:<br> 12:00 - Introductions<br> 12:10 - Workshop starts<br> 12:50 - Q&A PDXWIT Purpose:<br> PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events.

description nil **Speaker**: Ted Laderas (http://laderast.github.io/) - Instructor, Medical Informatics and Clinical Epidemiology, OHSU **Abstract**: Many graduate students in the basic sciences are afraid of data exploration and cleaning, which can greatly impact their downstream analysis results. By using a synthetic dataset, some simple `dplyr` commands, and a `shiny` dashboard, we teach graduate students how to explore their data and how to handle issues that can arise (missing values, differences in units). For this talk, we'll run through a simple EDA example (combining two weight loss datasets) with a general data explorer in `shiny` that can be easily customized to teach specific EDA concepts.

create Calagator::Event 1250472111 Thesis: An Elixir/Phoenix CMS Roll back

description nil For the longest time, content management systems have been dominated by PHP projects like WordPress, Drupal, and the like. But for those of us who want to build a Phoenix website, our only recourse has been to build some sort of admin and implement content management from scratch. Thesis provides an easily bolted on content editing system to your Phoenix website and provides a great developer _and_ user experience. It works with your existing authentication system and database and is only a few lines of code to implement on your site. Jamon Holmgren created Thesis originally for Rails and then recreated it for Phoenix along with Yulian Glukhenko. He’ll talk about what Thesis is and give a demo of implementing it onto an existing Phoenix website. Doors open at 6:30, and the talk starts around 7. Pizza and drinks provided by Househappy

create Calagator::Event 1250472110 The User Experience: Agency vs. Corporate and Why You Should Care Roll back

description nil Join us on June 27 as we explore several characteristics of how our partner professionals who deliver User Experience (UX) think about how what they do differs in the agency and corporate settings. Moda Health’s UX Strategy and Design Director Ed Stojakovic brings his insights from working on both sides, and within several groups in these companies. This field has many new people looking at how to work with them or join them. If you currently work with UX teams or aspire to, this one's for you. ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Ed recently left the hectic agency side of UX and big-city living of Chicago for the deep focus of UX operations at Oregon’s healthcare insurer Moda. He leads UX strategy and design for Moda’s suite of customer-facing digital products to help simplify the complex healthcare industry. Prior to this change in location and focus, he lead multi-talented UX teams at integrated marketing agencies FCB Chicago and Leo Burnett. With over 20 years’ experience serving in corporate and agency user experience and design roles, he has seen UX emerge from a bootstrap role to a formal essential role for modern organizations. He holds a Master’s in Design from the IIT Institute of Design. Follow his UX thinking at @estojakovic https://www.facebook.com/events/1214648378643860/

create Calagator::Event 1250472109 The Science of Networking with Vanessa Van Edwards Roll back

description nil What comes to mind when you think of networking? Awkward small talk? Boring conversations? The same type of interactions over and over again? We want to put a stop to dull, average, boring networking, so with the help of Vanessa Van Edwards, we’re hosting a new type of networking event--one that we guarantee will result in better conversations and more meaningful and effective interactions. Just like speed-dating, attendees will have 3 minutes per pair to answer a predetermined conversation starter shown on the screen. Once the 3 minutes have elapsed, a timer will go off and attendees will be directed to rotate so they have a new partner to answer the next conversation starter. There are 8 total rounds. SCIENCE OF NETWORKING Following the speed-networking, Vanessa will present on the science of networking and communication. In this talk Vanessa will delve into how to communicate, influence and connect with others. Communication science, personality research and body language can also help attendees understand how to decode emotions, uncover truth and increase the trust. Participants will be able to use these tips both inside and outside the office. This science-based talk will be lively, entertaining and have actionable tips. Specifically, Vanessa will cover: - Increase Your Confidence for Networking, Negotiating and Interviewing - Power Nonverbal for Pitches & Presence - How to Make a Lasting First Impressions Event Breakdown: 5:15pm – 5:45pm Registration, appetizers 5:45pm – 6:25 pm Speed Networking 6:30pm – 7:15pm Presentation 7:15pm - 8:00pm Networking/Cocktails on Ecotrust Roofdeck ABOUT OUR SPEAKER Vanessa Van Edwards is the lead investigator at the Science of People, a human behavior research lab. update Calagator::Event 1250472011 PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Happy Hour Networking Event Roll back

description ** Please RSVP on Eventbrite ** Join us for happy hour at PricewaterhouseCoopers on June 27th. With summer upon us, we wanted to take a moment to celebrate the end of the school year. We’ve all been students and many of us are parents, so we know how important education is and wanted to build our June event theme around it. The conversation starter this month is “If you were a high school student today, which class would you want to take?” While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community. • Introduction to PwC, including what they do and what job opportunities are available. • Marie Xun Wang, Postdoctoral Researcher at OHSU, will give us pointers on transitioning out of school into the professional world. • Esbeida Ramos and Nikki Whitton, both STEM Event Coordinators at nConnect NW, will talk about preparing the future workforce. During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking: • An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. • Table Topics to help break-the-ice. • A section for job seekers and those hiring, to ensure people get connected. PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. description nil ## About Magic Night Magic Night is a hands on, team oriented, Javascript coding lab, welcoming of all experience levels and backgrounds. We get together because coding is fun; fun to solve hard problems, and fun to work together. We organize into small teams to code up creative solutions to a common challenge, then after 3 hours of building, present to the group. ## This Month Your mission, should you chose to accept it, is to generate a program that plays a game of rock 0, paper 1, or scissors 2. no random functions allowed! the program should be entirely deterministic. (in other words if your program plays against the same opponent program more than once the sequence of moves should be the same.) your program will receive a list of your opponent's previous moves, your previous moves, and the round number; there will be 1000 rounds per match. The tournament will be round robin format, the program with the greatest number of victories will be declared the rock paper scissors champion.

create Calagator::Event 1250472104 Build a Bad-Ass Pipeline! Workshop Roll back

description nil What is a sales pipeline? Why do I need a sales pipeline? How do I use my sales pipeline? One of the things I hate about some of the workshops or seminars I have attended over the years is that I walk out with great intentions to use everything I learned but then I do not implement the thing or things I had learned. Why? My theory is that while in the workshops I just sat and listened, take notes and participate but I did not ‘leave’ with something that fit me. Once I got home I had to make the program work for me and personalize it for me. With this in mind I have designed my workshops to be hands-on, small and intimate. We work together as a team to design what you need not what the masses need. So my challenge to you is to walk out of my workshop with the framework for your ready-to-use personal sales pipeline. Sales pipelines are not just a visual representation of your sales prospects…it is the bible of your business. Your pipeline should be personal and represent you and your business. At any time, you should be able to it pull up your pipeline and speak clearly and intelligently to where you are at in your business. My one-hour brown bag lunch workshop is designed to help you understand the importance to having a pipeline, how to manage your pipeline and design a quickie pipeline that is fits your personality and your personal needs. Please remember to bring your laptop and a lunch! Cost: FREE Please sign up at Eventbrite website seating is very limited...for more info on me visit, annieweller.com

description nil How do we measure success? How do we measure success without data?? Many teams forget to collect data about the work. In the heat of battle, data collection seems so much less important than getting the code cut and the customer satisfied. Folks, we need all kinds of help here. How do you collect data? Is it passive? Does it just happen as you work? How much data is laying around in your workplace just waiting to be scoped up, looked at, talked about, and learned from? How much better would your life be if you had real data to base your improvement plans and your problem solving on? Please come with your pointers, and stories, and techniques for collecting and using data with low pain and high value outcomes. Okay, tell us about the high pain and low value data collection experiences, too. After all, there's beer. We'll be in the back. We start on time and end on time. Please try to do likewise. RSVP's welcome but not required at [email protected].

create Calagator::Event 1250472102 AgilePDX Downtown: Discovering Your Team's Values with LEGO Serious Play! Roll back

description nil At AgilePDX Downtown in June, Paul Wynia is facilitating a fun interactive workshop with us! Teams are tricky things, they get even trickier when a team fails to come together as a cohesive group of individuals. One of the steps to getting through the Forming/Storming phases and onto the Performing stage is creating a set of team values and defining how those values translate to behaviors. In this fun, interactive session we'll explore team values with LEGO Serious Play. Using these methodologies, we ensure that all team members are engaged, have a voice, and can influence the final outcome while at the same time reducing the stress and conflict that can occur. Speaker Paul Wynia is an Agile Coach, Consultant, and Trainer with 20 years of software industry experience. Paul is also a Licensed Trainer of the Lego® Serious Play® methodologies http://www.strategicplay.com/ and uses Agile Games and simulations to incorporate collaboration, creativity, and innovation into teamwork. He is co-host of the http://agilegamespodcast.com/ and co-chair of the annual http://agilegameswest.com/ conference.
