<p>Presentations begin at 6:30pm. We feature 2 awesome speakers that bring you the best that Portland (and beyond) has to offer in Node & JavaScript. Periodically we'll open with a brief lightning talk too.</p> <p>Open dialogue during the presentations is very welcome–we're all here to learn!</p> <p>Come a little early and say hi! The organizers will be available to help any newcomers with getting started. If you need help installing node and npm, or have questions or anything–please reach out.</p> <p>Before our first talk we'll engage in a friendly Node quiz! Prizes include awesome learning materials sponsored by Cloudflare (eg. Books like "Effective JavaScript" by David Herman, and "Node.js in Action" by Harter, Cantelon, Rajlich, and Holowaychuk).</p> <p>Our talks cover a variety of topics, presented by people with varying levels of experience. Some of our most recent speakers have been: Max Ogden, Substack, Chris Dickinson, Ben Acker, and more.</p> <p>Afterwards, if you're stoked to keep hangin' we regularly take our discussions onward to post-talk drinks nearby! We may even hack a little if the night is young!</p> <p>People who're new to programming and new friends to the Node community are very welcome! Say hi, make some noise, get to know folks, and ask questions!</p> <p>Brief note about our location:</p> <p>Please look for Nodesters standing by the door to let you in if it's locked! If you arrive beyond 6:35pm, please shoot us a tweet at @pdxnode, and we'll come as soon as we can to let you in. :)</p> |

During this Leadership Narrative lunch and learn, Tyrone Poole (founder of One App Rentals) will talk about what it truly takes to win as an entrepreneur and how failing is a part of the journey. This is a great opportunity to meet with and learn from one of Portland's shining stars. Seating is limited so register now and reserve your spot!
ABOUT ONEAPP OREGON
OneApp Oregon was started out of necessity. Tyrone Poole, Founder and CEO, was training to become a firefighter when he suffered a gruesome injury that hospitalized him. With no insurance or income, Tyrone's bills piled up and by the time he was released from the hospital he was broke and homeless. Tyrone took shelter in the YWCA, where he made it his mission to help people find housing. In his time helping people, one thing became very clear: application fees and the uncertainty of applying to properties were crippling. Application fees can cost upwards of $50, and there's no way for an applicant to know whether they meet the property's criteria. From this realization, an idea was born: one application, one application fee, transparency to all properties. OneApp Oregon was born.

Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Projects big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conversation and discussion. All are welcome, no need to RSVP - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and questions!
This month's agenda: exciting happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell.
This month our special topic is "Tools for telling stories with Data and Maps". We'll cover a wide range of tools for making charts, tours, interactive graphics, timelines, (and of course maps!), and methods and tools for wrapping all these items up into stories built for the web. It'll be a whirlwind tour and cover options from tons of different free and open sources, so if this if this is your sort of thing, don't miss it!
As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.

AgilePDX Westside Cafe: Dealing Successfully with Conflict
Roll back
| description |

Many of our agile methods can increase conflict. Collaboration means conflict. Any time we try to solve problems different opinions emerge on what to do. Transparency can trigger insecurities and conflict. Experimenting and failing/learning rapidly is not intuitive to our society and is bound to generate some friction.
The stance we take when faced with conflict can help the team create something new, or it can add to the tangle. What do you do to help yourself stay present in the midst of conflict? What in-the-moment facilitation or coaching tools do you use when conflict is bubbling?
Join us and share your stories about conflict, what you have tried and what you have learned. Hope to see you Friday April 27th for a lively discussion on conflict management within agile teams. |

We'll have some time afterwards to chat about anything/everything. Working on a project? Now could be your time to get some contributions. Want to work on something BIG? Check in with Phil &/or Benjamin. We have ideas... |

Want to implement a Jira Service Desk instance? Trying to get a botched project back on the rails? Or, want to share your war stories and prep for the next upgrade? Portland Atlassian User Group teams up with local technologists to answer your questions and share their knowledge about Jira Service Desk.
<b>Details:</b>
<i>When?</i> Wednesday, May 16, 2018 - 5pm to 7pm PDT
<i>Where?</i> Wacom Experience Center - 1455 NW Irving St., Portland, OR 97209
<i>What?</i> Learning and collaboration. Bring an appetite and good questions! Food provided for those who <a href="https://aug.atlassian.com/events/details/atlassian-portland-oregon-presents-adapt-iterate-and-grow-with-jira#/">RSVP online (help us plan!)</a>
Dylan Pederson is a technical consultant who's successfully implemented JSD instances, migrated servers, and completed upgrades for a number of clients. He'll share his process and lessons learned, including the requirements gathering process, testing, backup, upgrade, and more.
He's joined by Atlassian partner and this month's sponsor Coyote Creek Consulting. Coyote will be offering raffle items and other swag, and guess what, our basket of goodies is now full, too!
Wacom has kindly offered to host us again, thank you. Members of their tech team will also join to share their insights from their own JSD experiences. Learn to be a good client, if you're outsourcing your JSD tech services, and find out what to look for and ask so your org doesn't get taken advantage of. |

Seeking App Dev and IT Pro volunteers to teach Computer Science in Public Schools

Make sure you register here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KZYLD2G
TEALS (Technology Education and Literacy in Schools) believes that every high school in the US should offer high-quality, rigorous computer science courses. Computer science is a vital driver in today’s global innovation economy, but most U.S. high schools – including more than 75% of Oregon high schools – are unable to offer rigorous CS courses. Without CS in high schools, our students are missing out on essential computational skills that will help them succeed in any career they wish to pursue, and professional skills that could lead to an economically secure future.
TEALS seeks to change that reality. Our volunteers work directly with classroom teachers to help them build and grow their CS teaching capacity through yearlong support and training to inspire the next generation of innovators and computer scientists.
You can read more about TEALS here: https://www.tealsk12.org/
Are you interested? Want to volunteer? Register for this lunch-time event here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KZYLD2G |
