| description |
Please join us for a night of conversation on self-tracking where we share ideas, tools and experiments with the Portland Quantified Self community. A special treat, Gary Wolf, the co-founder of Quantified Self will be in attendance!
If you keep track of your life in any way – life logging, athletic performance, mood, sleep, medical symptoms, happiness, energy, etc. – come and share your methods, results and insight.
Here's our agenda:
**Intro and Announcements** - 6:15 sharp!
**Presentations** - 6:30 to 7:30
• Steven - Lessons learned from Bloodtesters.
• Plus more! Let us know if you have a project to share when you sign up.
**Social Time** - 7:30 to 8 pm
After some amazing presentations, we will have some time to converse with those around us.
*Where our talks come from*: Our talks come from you! Do you have a personal self-tracking story to share? Please let us know in your RSVP. You can let the three prime questions guide your presentation:
*What did you do? How did you do it? What did you learn?*
Here are examples from previous Quantified Self events:
• Ellis Bartholomeus: [My Health Scars](http://quantifiedself.com/projects/1057).
• Kyrill Potapov: [Tracking Productivity for Personal Growth](http://quantifiedself.com/projects/1073).
• Whitney Erin Boesel: [My Numbers Sucked But I Made This Baby Anyway](http://quantifiedself.com/projects/1079). |

AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: Learning through failure - building organizations that embrace it
Roll back
| description |

→ |
We learn through doing. Sometimes that means failing. Some of our greatest lessons come from learning what not to do or failing to deliver something important. This is in line with the motto "Fail Fast" which we hear often.
How do we, as agilists, build organizations that embrace the whole of failure as a way of learning? What does it take to allow the team and people to fail, with clear feedback that supports growth and development? How do we make it safe to fail, but still have consequences, because without consequences failure is meaningless?
Bring your collective experience with this, share your challenges and fears, and bring your questions to Ringlers where we get to build our community of practice and learn from each other. Also, we get to eat great food and drink beer!
Follow the link to our meetup to RSVP! |

Hack the Dot
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
**Hack the Dot** is a two-hour hackathon where code school students, working developers, marketing and design professionals, and anyone else interested in the Web come together to build ideas. Use your skills in web development, storytelling, and creative ideation to build a humorous (maybe even functional!) product quickly, while meeting people in your tech/startup community.
**How does it work?**
At a domain-driven hackathon, all of the teams are given a single premium domain name at the beginning of the event. All teams then have two hours to come up with a product inspired by that domain, fueled by food and beverage. Whichever team builds the most creative and funny idea for the domain wins!
Prizes include the premium domain name itself, plus swag from our sponsors!
**Do I need to bring a team?**
Nope! Teams are formed randomly at the beginning. |

Tonight, we're going to celebrate with a collection of lightning talks show-casing new things we've learned or built...essentially, live demos of our #cool-til Slack channel 😄 Watch the @howardabrams Twitter channel for a URL if you want to join remotely...we may be a local diocese, but we're open to visitors.
After our show and tell session, we'll retire to a nearby restaurant for food and drinks. Hope to see you there.

There's also a Phoenix application which provides an interface to the audio processing layer. The project is a simple experiment but touches on a number of concepts which might be interesting: NIFs in Elixir, Rust threads, Phoenix channels and Umbrella application design.
- Josh Chernoff - Talk TBD
- Paul Rogers - Talk TBD
• What to bring
Yourself! A laptop sometimes comes in handy.
• Important to know
Pizza and drinks are typically provided by one of our sponsors.

Chad Dickerson (Former CEO of Etsy) says: "If you only have one book on product management, this is the one."
He is talking about the book 'INSPIRED: How to Create Tech Products Customers Love' by Marty Cagan. This book, now as a second edition, provides stories and information on how companies release a technology product that does not simply deliver a solution - but something customer love and rave about.
Review the book description to see if this is something you want to dive into, and join fellow product and development agile readers for a discussion. Oh, and for the listeners of the modern "reading" age, this book is available in audio.
Need more inspiration? Jeff Patton says of the book: "When I was a product leader, I experienced a fair bit of accidental successes and puzzling failures. Marty's writing has helped me understand how product managers and product organizations really should work. I wish I'd had this book years ago."
Visit our Meetup link to RSVP to the gathering. Thanks! |

New Relic FutureTalks PDX - Team health assessments: a way to understand yourself and improve all the things
Roll back
| description |

→ |
<p>Join us on Monday, May 14 for the next edition of FutureTalks featuring New Relic employees Brent Miller and Honey Darling unpacking the "Team Health Assessment" — an organizational practice we've just undertaken as part of our commitment to continual reinvention which will help us understand how teams work and how product is built at New Relic.</p> <p>The best human achievements are team efforts. How do you know if your teams are healthy? It’s a complex problem, with no easy answers. Two years into a seemingly successful agile transformation at New Relic, we found ourselves wondering how well our teams had taken to the new system, and didn’t really know. We knew that execution was much improved. What we didn’t know was why. Did our leadership all magically turn into serious taskmasters? Did our engineers seriously level up? Did our product managers start making perfect decisions? In order to find out, we crafted a set of team health standards, conducted a facilitated self-assessment with each team, and then asked each team to put together a plan to improve their health. We learned a lot along the way, about how to understand team health, and also about the shape, function, and dysfunction within our org.</p> <p>In this talk we will share our journey, help you understand how to create psychological safety around a team health assessment, and show the kinds of things that we learned about the org. We will examine the project from a high-level project flow perspective, from an organizational change perspective, and share one team’s experiences on the ground.</p> <p>--<br>Doors will open at 5:30 for networking with light food and drink before the program starts at 6pm. The program will conclude with a Q&A around 7:00pm.<br>--<br>About our presenters:</p> <p>Brent Miller:<br>Brent is a botanist turned engineer turned agilist, whose work is now at the center of the spicy Venn diagram of humans, technology, and organizational design. He enjoys systems thinking and continuous improvement, and somehow continuously improved himself into his current career. He lives in Portland with his wife and two kitties.</p> <p>Honey Darling:<br>Honey has built strong teams in a number of companies. She's a thoughtful leader: results-focused, calm and directed, and someone who builds teams that work together in the same direction. She is passionate about technology and people, and especially the intersection between the two. Honey believes in the power of collaboration, creativity, and continuous improvement.</p> |

Portland Java User Group (PJUG) - How to Protect against Deserialization Attacks
Roll back
| description |

→ |
<p>Insecure deserialization is one of the most critical web application security risks, yet it is by no means a new vulnerability category. Data serialization and deserialization have been used widely in applications, services and frameworks, with many programming languages supporting them natively. Deserialization got more attention recently as a potential vehicle to conduct several types of attacks: data tampering, authentication bypass, privilege escalation, various injections and, finally, remote code execution. Two recent vulnerabilities in Apache Commons and Apache Struts, both allowing remote code execution, helped raise awareness of this risk.</p> <p>We will discuss how data serialization and deserialization are used in software, the dangers of deserializing untrusted input, and how to avoid insecure deserialization vulnerabilities.</p> <p>Speaker:</p> <p>Alexei Kojenov (<a href="https://twitter.com/kojenov" class="linkified">https://twitter.com/kojenov</a>) is a Senior Application Security Consultant with years of prior software development experience. During his career with IBM, he gradually moved from writing code to breaking code. Since late 2016, Alexei has been working as a consultant at Aspect Security, helping businesses identify and fix vulnerabilities and design secure applications. Aspect Security was recently acquired by Ernst&Young and joined EY Advisory cybersecurity practice.</p> |

PDX OSGeo Monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |
Monthly meeting of the Portland open source GIS group. Projects big and small are usually presented monthly along with rousing conversation and discussion. All are welcome, no need to RSVP - our group ranges from the geo-curious to the überhackers so bring your ideas and questions!
This month's agenda: exciting happenings in geodata, upcoming geoevents and bring your own geo-show and tell.
This month our special guest is Nicholas Chun, manager of the Oregon Population Forecast Program (OPFP). The OPFP produces regularly updated, coordinated population forecasts for Oregon counties and cities to assist them with their long term land use planning strategies. In addition to his primary role, Nick regularly create demographic profiles for customized areas using census data. Most of his data extraction and manipulation is done in R studio because of its flexibility and diverse number of packages. Among other things, Nick will be demonstrating how to use R to grab census data from the official APIs and produce basic chloropleth maps. Bring your questions and come prepared to learn!
As always, there will be pizza! And BYOB is always welcome.

We'll meet in the Ecotrust Alder Room. Enter the atrium of the Ecotrust building from either side. Feel free to bring food and/or beer up with you from Hot Lips or Laughing Planet! Walk up the inside stairs along the East Wall or take the elevator to the second floor. The Alder Room entrance is right behind the Ecotrust front desk. We'll have the gate open for at least the first part of the meeting. If it's not open, call Tanya at 503-475-7833 or just yell through the gate at us :-) |
