create Calagator::Event 1250478065 Portland Linux/Unix Group: This is a test(1): A shell scripter's guide to ubiquitous assumption testing Roll back

description nil Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement Who: Michael Dexter
What: This is a test(1): A shell scripter's guide to ubiquitous assumption testing
Where: Zoom, flawed as it is, link below
When: Thursday, February 3rd, 2022 at 7pm
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom "Look before you leap" is a valuable lesson in many aspects of life but particularly in computer science and administration. Responsible developers make extensive use of the test(1), a.k.a. "[" utility which quickly and programmatically tests assumptions as simple as, "does this file exist", relying on zero and non-zero return values to answer that question. This deceptively-simple yet highly-efficient use of return values can avoid hours of debugging and achieve goals such as idempotence. This talk will explain the importance of the test(1) utility, and explain similar functionality in other utilities such as FreeBSD's grep(1), kldstat(8), and others that support "-q quiet" mode. It will also identify opportunities for additional "quiet mode" functionality. About Michael He broke it, he bought it. Michael has organized PLUG since late 2009 and did not find a speaker. By day, Michael has nursed depressed NAS systems back to life since 2012. Returning to Zoom for now PLUG aims to dogfood free and open source technologies whenever possible and Jit.si had a good run. It is quirky and very difficult to manage as a moderator, but it is free software. Recording meetings proved unworkable but thank you Vincent for spinning up a Jit.si VM during a meeting *and* removing the watermark. Many colleagues have reported that web-based Zoom is working better than ever with free and open source desktop operating systems and for the success of PLUG and my sanity as a moderator, I need to use the best tool for the job. Please continue to send your ideas for better tools and I would not rule out moving to a solution that someone is willing to take ownership of, as Vincent did with the Jit.si VM. https://us06web.zoom.us/j/85249530401?pwd=dWZPTllGRk1udWtVRXB0STZ2VlJXZz09 Meeting ID: 852 4953 0401 Passcode: 8675309 One tap mobile +13462487799,,85249530401# US (Houston) +17207072699,,85249530401# US (Denver) PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings.

With representation from all over the world, it takes more than just code to represent the authenticity of a character within a game. It also means that the people creating it are well represented in order to provide as accurate a representation of the cultures and behaviors enacted within a game. Join PDXWIT for this panel discussion to learn more about how game acculturation is changing the gaming industry and what it takes to create characters and stories that you and I can relate to in a virtual environment. Facilitated by Crystal Sincoff and Hazel Valdez, you will hear from Kate Edwards, Executive Director of Global Game Jam, as well as game designers including Lauren Lizardo and Zach Deocadiz as they discuss what’s happening in the gaming industry today. create Calagator::Event 1250478043 **TUESDAY** The Digital Defense Fund and information security in abortion access Roll back

description nil ***NOTE: this meeting is on the 3rd TUESDAY because of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday on Monday!*** The 2020s have seen new and complex challenges for those fighting for reproductive freedom. In September of last year, the Texas legislature passed one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the nation, prohibiting all procedures after 6 weeks, without exceptions for rape or incest. But SB8 goes further, giving citizens with no connection to the woman the right to sue in civil court any person who aids her in seeking an abortion. As Planned Parenthood states, this means that “private citizens can sue other Texans for having or aiding in the procurement of an abortion — they can sue anyone from the person who drives the patient to the clinic to the doctor who performs the abortion.” (https://www.plannedparenthoodaction.org/planned-parenthood-pennsylvania-advocates/blog/how-did-texas-get-to-sb8) As the EFF predicts, “The result will be a chilling effect on speech and a litigation cudgel that will be used to silence those who seek to give women truthful information about their reproductive options.” Since 2017, the Digital Defense Fund has brought engineers and organizers together to provide security and technology support for the abortion access movement. Kate Bertash, Director of the DDF, will speak during our January event about the critical work the DDF does to create "a future where technology and innovation support secure, autonomous reproductive decisions, free from stigma.” Speaker bio: Kate Bertash (she/her) is Director of the Digital Defense Fund, a team providing technology and security resources and front-line support to the American abortion access movement. She brings together a background in nonprofit fundraising and technology, and left startup life after co-organizing the Abortion Access Hackathons and Debug Politics Hackathons. In her free time she helps organize the Crypto and Privacy Village at DEFCON, designs fabrics, and is working on building a science research and education center here in the Pacific Northwest.
