Guy Cutting
Data Engineer, Instructor
Guy is an enthusiastic problem solver who has deep experience working with data, both on the front and back end. He began his career as a web application developer, working in ColdFusion, PHP, Java, and MySQL. He learned Python while studying Computational Physics and writing experimental control software for optics and radio telescope projects. Eventually his love of math and statistics led him into data science, where he learned to apply a wide range of models and techniques to gain insight from many different types of data.
Guy holds a master’s degree in Systems Science, an interdisciplinary field which uses diverse tools and methods to solve complex problems. Working as a Data Scientist helped him to realize that his real passion is for designing and deploying data processing systems that support front-end analysis and Data Science, and now his focus is in Cloud Data Engineering. He is an experienced communicator who enjoys translating technical problems for audiences of all backgrounds and skill levels. Guy is a Google-certified Cloud Engineer.
Parham Parvizi
Founder, Data Engineering Expert
Parham Parvizi is a founding member of Tura.io and DataStack.Academy. Tura is a group of professional Cloud Data Engineers and Architects, and DataStack.Academy is the most comprehensive Data Engineering bootcamp; training the future of Cloud Data Engineers.
Parham has been a Data Engineer and Cloud/Big Data Solution Architect for nearly 20 years working for major silicon valley tech companies. He started by loading floppy disks into an IBM 8086 machine to play games at the age of five. He learned programming as a teenager by hiding bookmarks on the shelves at Barnes & Noble. He now guides companies as a senior advisor on their digital transformation to the Cloud.
Parham is an Apache Software Foundation contributor and was an early adopter and contributor to open source Big Data projects such as Map Reduce and Hive. He was one of the founding members of Talend and helped their growth in the Americas and Asia Pacific market during the early years of the company. As a Talend ambassador, he’s trained thousands of users around the world. Later, he served as a Big Data Product Manager at Pivotal (currently known as Vmware Tanzu). He was a team member for Greenplum Distribution of Hadoop and led the team behind a Hadoop distributed SQL query language called HAWQ.
As a Data Advisor and Consultant, Parham has had the opportunity and pleasure to work with nearly every Fortune 100 company over the years. From managing thousands of node clusters to optimizing data tasks that you are familiar with behind the scenes.

Abstract
This talk will introduce Quine: a brand new open source “streaming graph interpreter” meant as a new fundamental infrastructure component to address major challenges in data engineering and simplify enterprise data pipelines.
Quine fits in between the world of databases and stream processing systems. As data streams in from Kafka, Kinesis, etc., Quine builds it into a graph. Then using “standing queries”—queries that live inside the graph and efficiently propagate—it finds matches to complex patterns in the graph and streams the results out right away. Quine maintains a stateful representation of all data streamed through (like a database) so that complex results are built from the combination of new streaming data and potentially very old data—all without having to manage any time windows. Since the graph is fully versioned, you can always query for what the data used to be, at any historical moment. Quine is meant to be a complete package of everything that lives between two Kafka topics: high-volume events stream in, and highly-meaningful interpreted results stream out.
In this talk, we will explain the how Quine works under the hood, discuss some of the interesting and brain-bending challenges we had to confront in order to create it, and show some uses cases to illustrate why it’s important for modern data pipelines. Quine implements a property-graph data model on top of an asynchronous graph computational model. It’s like Pregel with Actors. Each node is capable of performing arbitrary computation, so we can bake in some powerful capabilities deep in the graph; and then package it up for easy use into user-contributed “recipes” available in the Github repo. Quine is free and open and the repo will be publicly available in February, and actively supported by thatDot and the community.

Miki Demeter will be joining us to discuss open source software on February 18th!
Open source software is code that is designed to be publicly accessible: anyone can see, modify, and distribute the code as they see fit.
This talk will cover open source software and why it's important to look at the software that is put into products.
Miki's current position is as a Security Researcher In the IPAS GO (formerly Security Center of Excellence) working on Secure Development Lifecycle governance and as Product Security Expert for Open Source Software.
She is a TrevorChat Crisis Counselor and is working with outside organizations like Women Who Code, Women of Security, Portland Women in Tech, and the Diana Initiative to help drive diversity and true inclusion while advocating for women in the STEM fields.
