create Calagator::Event 1250458415 Galois Tech Talk: An Introduction to Communicating Haskell Processes Roll back

description nil Haskell is an excellent language for combining the power of functional programming with imperative constructs. This characteristic led to the development of the Communicating Haskell Processes (CHP) libraries, which support imperative synchronous message-passing in Haskell. The core 'chp' library provides basic message-passing, concurrency and choice, as well as integrated support for tracing. The 'chp-plus' library provides higher-level features such as process composition operators and behaviour combinators. This talk provides an introduction to the two libraries and the programming style they engender -- as well as a brief look at the formal semantics underlying the libraries.

description nil Go Portland Tech is a chance for everyone involved in Portland technology to come try their hand at Go, a game that is loved by geeks the world over. Go is both thousands of years old, simple to learn, and poses interesting computer science problems (a computer player has yet to beat the best humans, and amateurs can still beat the bots too). Regular Portland Go club meetups are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays (see: OregonGo.org) but this is a chance for tech folks that are seasoned players or absolute beginners to get together and share a game. No experience is necessary to attend.

create Calagator::Event 1250458406 Advanced SQL Tuning Tips and Techniques with Dan Hotka, 15-16 March 2010 Roll back

description nil The course starts out with a complete overview of the Oracle architecture so students can get an understanding how their SQL and applications can take advantage of the computing environment. This seminar goes into detail on how Oracle arrives at an execution plan, the explain plan. Dan illustrates various coding techniques that insure the SQL runs at maximum performance in the current and future Oracle database environments. Indexes are closely examined as well. The internal structure is discussed as well as the decision process Oracle uses when selecting whether to use indexes or not. Dan will illustrate how to tell which indexes are being used. Dan illustrates various free tuning aids such as the Oracle Trace Facility, Stats Pack, and the newer Trace Analyzer. This seminar then uses this information in a discussion on finding the problem SQL using scripts and additional information in the V$ and X$ dictionary views. All scripts illustrated in this seminar will be made available to the attendees. The seminar concludes with a discussion on some Oracle10g new features that might be causing performance issues.

update Calagator::Event 1250458170 Portland Functional Programming Study Group Roll back

description <i>ABOUT: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, Erlang, OCaml, Scala, and others. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month. VENUE: You can enter the event space through the glass doors on 7th that are close to the intersection with Clay, or through the front door and just look for signs to the event space. There will be pdxfunc signs on both.</i> 1. Presentation: Jamey Sharp will give us a walk-through of the Haskell gzip deflate algorithm code that he and Josh Triplett developed. 2. Group coding activity: We'll split up into groups that will each try to build an FP app from scratch in an hour, and then share the results with everyone. We'll make teams with people of different skill levels, so having FP coding skills will be useful but not required. My hope is this activity will give more folks a chance to explore and learn from others how to design and implement an FP app. Sample app ideas: blog, Twitter-clone, Sinatra-like web-framework, message queue client/server, filesystem directory browser, CSV-to-JSON converter, etc. <i>ABOUT: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. create Calagator::Event 1250458399 Dr. Scott Burns - NW Major Earthquake Potential with discussion of both Haiti and Chile Roll back

description nil Portland is earthquake country. Three different types of earthquakes are possible in Oregon with two creating big threats for Portland. One is movement on local faults in the Portland area like the Portland Hills Fault. The other is the “Big One’ that could generate a magnitude of 9 along the coast and could last three minutes. Portland would be greatly affected by both. Dr. Burns will talk about the sources of these quakes and their past history and future chances and specifically will talk about both Haiti and Chile and their relevance to Oregon. Chile is a perfect example of what could happen in Oregon with the Big One.

update Calagator::Event 1250458375 SAOpdx: Parallel Java Programming for Multi-Core Processors Roll back

description Presented by the Developers Forum With over 6.5 million software developers worldwide, Java is used in every major industry segment, running on everything from cell phones to scientific supercomputers. Traditionally, it has been difficult for programmers to take advantage of the multi-core systems with their ever-multiplying number of cores. But that is all about to change with JSR-166y. Targeted for Java 7, scheduled for release in late 2010, JSR-166y adds a lightweight task framework known as ForkJoin (FJ) to the Java platform. Steve Dohrmann will be discussing the fundamentals of parallel Java programming. His talk will include the use of Java threads, an overview of the JSR-166y (ForkJoin) package, and some points on higher-level parallel programming models. If you're a Java developer, you can't afford to miss this opportunity to learn about the future of Java in a parallel world. And developers on other environments will find the overview of parallel application development and solid parallel algorithm fundamentals to be valuable in building systems that scale and provide competitive differentiation for your solutions. Meet the Speaker: Steve Dohrmann, Software Engineer, Intel Since joining Intel in 1994, Steve has worked in a variety of research, advanced development, and product groups within the company. He is currently working in a Java technology group and is focused on data-parallel programming for the Java VM. Intel will be giving away a brand new laptop for a door prize! Speaker Bio: Jon Bach has been in testing for 14 years, 12 of which has been as a manager. His experience includes managing teams at Microsoft, HP and LexisNexis, and is currently a managing consultant for Quardev, Inc. -- a Seattle test lab. He speaks frequently about test management and exploratory testing, and is the co-inventor (with his brother James) of Session-Based Test Management. He’s also written a few articles for testing magazines as well as a listed co-author of a Microsoft Patterns and Practices book on acceptance testing (available for free online). Find him on Facebook, Twitter, or his presentations and articles on http://www.quardev.com, where he also has a blog. Jon Bach is coming to our local agile users group to tell us about his specialty, exploratory testing. Pizza at 6:30, meeting at 7. Talk: "Exploratory Testing: Now In Session" The agile nature of exploration and the ability of testers to rapidly apply their skills and experience make exploratory testing a widely used test approach—especially when time is short. But exploratory testing is often dismissed by project managers who assume that it is not reproducible, measurable, or accountable. If you share these concerns, a solution may lie in a technique called Session-Based Test Management (SBTM), developed by Jon and his brother James specifically to address these problems. In SBTM, testers are assigned areas of a product to explore, and testing is time boxed in "sessions" which have mission statements called “charters” to create a meaningful and countable unit of work. Jon discusses—and you can practice—the skills of exploration and demonstrates a freely available, open source tool to help manage your exploratoration.
