FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Media contacts: Michael Coates, [email protected], 503.780.3945
Startup Weekend Portland set for November 12-14
Part of Startup Weekend, worldwide organization funded by the Kauffman Foundation, the Portland event supports startup development over a 54-hour weekend marathon.
Portland, OR â October 12, 2010 â Kicking off Global Entrepreneur Week, Startup Weekend Portland is open to entrepreneurs, developers, marketing folks, students, lawyers, angel investors, and anyone who wishes to spend an intense and intensely fun weekend building a team to start a new company.
Under the guidance and encouragement of business leaders, mentors and investors, attendees pitch their business ideas on Friday evening. The most viable ideas are chosen and teams begin to form organically. Over the weekend, teams are coached, guided and taught by members of the startup community to produce a working business model by Sunday. All teams present to a panel of judges, comprised of leaders within the local entrepreneurial community, and a winner is chosen.
Register by going to the web site. Ticket prices are $75 for members of the business community and $40 for students.
Notable companies who have emerged from Portland are CPusage, Mugasha Get Gathered, Life Grant, Startup River, and TreasuRecycle.
Startup Weekend is a non-profit, global organization supported by funding from the Kauffman Foundation. Startup Weekend events are currently held in over 100 cities in over 30 countries with new cities added every month. One event which created worldwide interest was Startup Weekend in Tel Aviv, Israel for Israelis and Palestinians. The two groups coming together and cooperating to build businesses created a positive buzz around the globe and especially in the Middle East.
Global Entrepreneurship Week runs from November 15 â 21 and will host 40,000 events in 100 countries involving 10,000,000 people. |

Join us for our monthly IxDA Portland meetup. Co-Leader Barbara Holmes will lead an exercise called the Customer Journey, a technique for doing user research.
As IxD practitioners we’re pretty familiar with user research techniques like personas and scenarios. How do you take this research and bring it to life for stakeholders at the business unit level or higher? One technique is the customer journey. This month, we’ll explore customer journeys as a way to illustrate user research and align it with client’s business and marketing goals. We’ll practice creating one by taking a look at a journey we’ve all made; deciding to be involved in the IxD profession.
Barbara Holmes, User Experience Architect at ISITE Design and co-leader of the Portland IxDA chapter, will lead the discussion about customer journeys. She and Jeanne will then facilitate the activity, and follow-up discussion.
In the activity, we’ll work individually to draw our own journey to the IxD profession. Where did you start? What drew you to the practice? What learning/training did you engage with? What are you doing now? After individual work, we’ll break into small groups where you’ll share your journeys with each other. The goal is to find common threads or patterns. Finally, you’ll present those commonalities and patterns to the group in a small group presentation.
Anyone and everyone is welcome, designers and non-designers alike.

==============================================
Talk descriptions:
"Spatial Analysis with R"
Ben will share some recent work he did using R for spatial data visualization. He will discuss how to read shapefiles and rasters into R, how to join and process data related to those shapes, and how to generate dynamic animated map products.
"R Therapy"
Do you have a problem that you are trying to solve with R that you just can't get to work? A model you can't seem to specify? A graph you can't tweak? A dataset you can't tame? An interface you can't bridge? A bug you can't trap? Well, try some group theRapy.
Bring your laptop, problem, and/or dataset and we will try to tackle the problems you are having as a group. If there are multiple problems, we can break into smaller groups. Don't have any current unresolved problems of your own? Then maybe you can help someone else, or at least learn from their problems before they are yours.
==============================================

Ben Stabler is a Supervising Modeler at Parsons Brinckerhoff. Parsons Brinckerhoff "provides strategic consulting, planning, engineering, and program and construction management services to both public and private sector clients ... in multiple market sectors, including transportation, power, buildings/facilities, water/wastewater, environmental, and urban/community development."

The Eugene [Modern] Web Developers group meets monthly, on the second Tuesday of the month, to discuss all things web development, but we welcome non-web development as well, and have discussed mobile, desktop, and really any software development. The community here in Eugene is small enough, that we'd rather have simply all software developers who are interested in hanging out and talking shop, etc.
We try to have at least one presentation (whether 5 minutes or 1 hour) at each meetup, and if you have a topic you'd like to present, please post to the mailing list/Google Group. |

Free Business Training, Portland
“Transforming Customers into Raving Fans Through Social Media”
Many successful companies are using social media to attract and convert leads, grow revenue, reduce marketing costs and even develop new products.
Is YOUR business being left behind?
Why Do Some Businesses Have Trouble With Social?
85% of companies have used Social Media and failed to see business results, while 10% use it and see their revenue soar. There are 3 primary reasons why businesses fail with their Social Media efforts:
1. The business has a siloed organizational structure. Social media can often blur the lines between customer service, sales, marketing and even R&D. Be open to change.
2. The business leaders think social media is nothing more than another marketing tactic. But
this approach leads to pushy selling and inconsistent messaging and can turn off more business in the long-term. These new tools require a different mindset than traditional marketing.
3. The business leader mistakenly assumes that because many of the social channels are free that they are easy to use and so jump in without a strategy. After this doesn’t work, they conclude that social simply doesn’t work. The problem, however, was with the message, not the medium.
Put YOUR Business in the Winning 10%
Join Cinta Media Group for a free training to help your business thrive in the modern marketplace. You will walk away with clear actionable steps you can take. There will be time for Q&A at the end.

PDX.pm - Practical Lists / Utilities pulled from Fennec

The monthly meeting of the Portland Perl Mongers
peaker: Chad Granum
Chad will give 2 shorter talks in a row. The first talk will deal with lists, what they are, how to use them. The second talk is a short presentation on several useful tools/utilities that started as part of the Fennec project but have been pulled out for general use.
Practical Lists
Chad will define what a list is and how it differs from an array. He will cover tools such as grep and map, as well as some List::Util functions. He will explain how you may start using lists in more places when you understand how they work.
Utilities pulled from Fennec
Fennec was a large undertaking, it also required implementing a few new ideas. Many of the new ideas are useful outside of the Fennec project. Chad will cover the following until he runs out of time:
Exporter::Declare
Method::Workflow
Child
Exodist::Util
Devel::CallerStack |

title:
Fides: Remote Anomaly-Based Cheat Detection Using Client Emulation
speaker:
Prof. Wu-chang Feng
time:
10:30am, Tuesday 19 October 2010
location:
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR,USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
abstract:
As a result of physically owning the client machine, cheaters in online games currently have the upper-hand when it comes to avoiding detection. To address this problem and turn the table on cheaters, this paper presents Fides, an anomaly-based cheat detection approach that remotely validates game execution. With Fides, a server-side Controller specifies how and when a client-side Auditor measures the game. To accurately validate measurements, the Controller partially emulates the client and collaborates with the server. This paper examines a range of cheat methods and initial measurements that counter them, showing that a Fides prototype is able to efficiently detect several existing cheats, including one state-of-the-art cheat that is advertised as undetectable.
bio:
Wu-chang Feng is currently an Associate Professor in the Intel Systems and Networking Laboratory at Portland State University where he leads a research group in networking and security. Wu-chang received his B.S. in 1992 from Penn State University and his M.S.E. and Ph.D. degrees in 1994 and 1999 from the University of Michigan. He was awarded the IEEE Communications Society 2003 William R. Bennett prize as well as one of four prizes recognizing the Best IBM Research Papers in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering and Math published in 2002. |

Writing Testable code. You all know by now that you should be unit testing your code, but do you know how? It is unfortunately really easy in flex to architect code which is very difficult to test. In this session, we will explore how to build components and applications in flex which are inherently testable, and see how we test them.
Join us Thursday, October 14, for food and networking at 5:30 PM sponsored by Thetus Corporation in association with the PDXRIA User Group. Our speaker, Michael Labriola starts at 6 PM.
Michael Labriola is a Senior Consultant at Digital Primates and the Lead Developer for FlexUnit 4. He has been developing Internet applications since 1995 and working with Flex since its 1.0 beta. Michael is an Adobe Certified Instructor, Community Professional, and co-author of the Flex 2, 3 and 4 Training from the Source books and Breaking out of the Browser with Adobe AIR.
As an international speaker and team mentor on Flex and AIR projects, he has consulted for many of the worldâs most recognized brands. His free time is spent escaping from technology through wine and food.

The theme of the meeting is the new features of Xcode 4. Brandon, Rich and I will be dividing them up; if anyone else wants to join in, just let me know!
Everyone needs to be under the Apple NDA; the easiest way to do that is to sign up for the Mac or iOS developer program (the free registration is fine).
A general Q&A session will follow the presentations, and then we will adjourn for beer.

The financial crisis left technology companies experiencing salary freezes, layoffs, shifts in equity compensation, mandatory time-off along with additional cost-cutting measures. Recent economic indicators point to recovery, so where do we go from here? What are the new trends in compensation and what is your company offering to stay competitive in the US and Globally?
Join your peers and special guest, Linda Amuso, President of Radford, as she will share compensation market intelligence and moderate a discussion that will include:
- Trends in compensation including incentive and equity compensation
- Effectively engaging your comp committee and board
- Impact of new regulations on CEO & executive compensation
- Pressure of wage deflation
Special Guest:
