TiE Oregon: Semiconductor Entrepreneurship - Opportunities & Challenges
Roll back
description |
What are the challenges facing semiconductor startups in todayâs environment?
Is it enough to have developed a great technology?
Historically, semiconductor startups have had massive development costs & long development cycles. A fabless semiconductor has to typically raise > $50M with a development and time to volume cycle that lasts 3-4 years or more. Has this changed in the light of current advances in technology?
Founders of semiconductor startups often come from an engineering background. What business challenges do these founders face?
Our panel, constituted of Steve Sharp, Chairman Triquint & past CEO of Triquint Semiconductor, Howard Bubb, CEO Ambric & Manpreet Khaira, CEO Avnera will address these and other important issues related to the viability of the fabless semiconductor startups in the new millennium.
The panel will be moderated by Scott Keeney, CEO & Co-founder nLight, a manufacturer of semiconductor lasers

CivicApps Hackathon - Mobile Apps for Education
Roll back
description |
There are a number of people and companies in Portland who are building textbook applications, teaching tools and other mobile resources, and there is even more of an interest. In August 2010, Mobile Portland's Mobile in Education event drew almost 100 people http://mobileportland.com/recaps/mobile-education-recap.
In partnership with the City of Portland, Webvisions and the Mayor's Office, we're honored to announce a hackathon dedicated exclusively to making mobile applications for education. There will be time in the morning for ideas and presentations from educators involved with the city, and brainstorming sessions and hacking in the afternoon.
Mobile developers, graphic and UX designers, educators and students are very welcome. Teams will have a chance to present their projects at 7:30Pm and will be judged by members of the City of Portland, Education District and local tech leaders. The three top projects will be automatically entered into the Webvisionary Awards in the Mobile Category.
CivicApps will be kindly sponsoring lunch, and we are looking for sponsors for breakfast and dinner. Please contact @caseorganic if you're interested in sponsoring. Come change the future of education! |

<strong>What Iâll Be Analyzing:</strong>
- What you need to fix on your site to rank at the top of Google.
- Personalized advice on how you can use social media and blogging to your advantage.

Open House
A call to action for leaders and press.
Being from the Pacific Northwest; you are considered a sustainability thought leader. You are cordially invited to our open house, a free solution based networking event.
Are you looking to get something out of the time you spend at a networking event? Do you attend green networking events to meet new people, or to participate in a solution?
Join the key Sustainable Oroville and Green Light Movie team for an engaging conversation. City leaders are saying YES to âgreenâ through Sustainable Oroville â a civic initiative that already has attracted a canola crushing plant (which will produce canola oil and meal), as well as plans for the nationâs first sustainable, passive haus hotel. Since the launch of this initiative, Oroville is gaining attention from other clean-technology entrepreneurs and sustainability advocates who want to see it succeed.
So whatâs the big deal? Oroville isnât waiting around for the world to change ⦠instead, itâs taking steps to change the world.
Orovilleâs journey into sustainability will create a road map that other agriculture-dependent communities can adopt. Capturing this transformation in a documentary film creates a proof-of-concept that can be distributed worldwide. Through conversations with local leaders, business owners and residents, as well as sustainability movement leaders, we will show a grassroots effort creating change we NEED to see in the world.
This is your opportunity to play a part in a "think globally, act locally" solution that is happening right now while being documented in the Green Light Movie, the Sustainable Oroville Project film.
This is not your usual networking event. Stop by anytime between 3pm and 6pm. Stay as long as you like. Get one on one talking time with the thought leader visionaries. Listen to the vision, get questions answered, and see how YOU can intersect your experience, skills, and passion into this movement that is providing a solution to improve qualities of life in our very own Pacific Northwest communities.

Mobile Web Frameworks: A Case Study in Implementing jQTouch
Roll back
description |

ORGANIZATION AND REGISTRATION
Presented by the Developer Forum of the Software Association of Oregon. Online registration is open through the website until 5pm on May 18.
EVENT SUMMARY
The sudden rise of smart phones interests organizations in extending their existing applications to work with mobile devices. The question immediately rises whether to develop native apps for the mobile platforms or to create a mobile-friendly web site.
Both approaches have pros and cons, but some code frameworks make it easy to produce websites that look and feel close to a native app by making use of HTML5 and CSS3.
Recently WebMD wanted to make a userâs Personal Health Record available in a mobile friendly manner. This talk will go over the key points which drove us to use the jQTouch framework over native apps, and it will go into technical detail showing how this framework allowed for a very fast and clean implementation.
The event includes networking, program, and lunch.
PRESENTER
Jake Hall, Lead Developer, WebMD
Jake Hall has worked in the software industry for 10 years. He has spent the last 6 years at WebMD Health Services Group and is currently Lead Developer and is has been providing leadership on the development team in moving to mobile applications. |

Presented by Chad Scherrer.
Sampling from a large discrete distribution is a common problem in statistics. In this talk, we'll consider a real-world situation where the properties of the distribution cause common approaches to break down, and we'll arrive at a Haskell-based solution that fixes the problem. |
