update Calagator::Event 1250460769 Pitch Club Roll back

description Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? Crave the harsh criticism of your peers? Need the validation of seeing what works and what doesn't in other pitches? Bring your 3 minute pitch. Put your name in a hat and if it gets picked, you're on. Powerpoints discouraged - just pitch. Then, answer questions and listen to painfully honest feedback from a panel of so-called experts. The first rule of Pitch Club is you HAVE TO PITCH. The second rule of Pitch Club is you HAVE TO PITCH. It doesn't have to be your startup - pitch your blog, your ideas for turning cat feces into gold, or your plan for world domination. More rules as we think of them. FAQ: Q: Who are these so-called experts and what are they going to do to me? A: Your pitch will be evaluated by entrepreneurs and people who pitch for a living. They are your superiors. Q: What about NDAs? Someone's going to steal my idea! A: There are no NDAs - use your best judgment about what to talk about and what not to. Also, remember the first rule of fight club - don't talk about fight club. We're all on the honor system here. Q: My pitch is more than 3 minutes - can I have more time? A: No. Q: Will it be catered? A: Hell no. You know what's in the lobster bisque. Q: Can anyone critique a pitch? A: No, only the panel. Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? description nil Join us at Open Source Bridge for lightning talks and discussions on exciting topics in devops best practices, cloud infrastructures (e.g. VMware Cloud Foundry, Rackspace Cloud, Amazon Web Services, openstack, etc), and tools (e.g. Puppet, Chef, etc). This BoF will be a great way to meet fellow practitioners and experts building the tools and platforms of the future. You’ll be able to find out what cool things others are doing and share your ideas. If you’d like to give a short talk, 3-15 minutes, please prepare and mention it at the beginning of the meeting so we can add you to the agenda. We’ll spend the rest of the time in open discussions, which will be awesome. Expect to meet engineers from Puppet Labs, VMware, RackSpace Cloud, openstack and other organizations in this industry. There will also be swag, like books and t-shirts. The Portland DevOps User Group and the Portland AWS User Group meet regularly to discuss these sorts of topics, see http://pdxdevops.org/ and http://pawsug.janrain.com/ for details. description nil Join us at the Open Source Bridge conference this week for a *free* birds-of-a-feather session to get together and share stories about our experiences with functional programming languages like Erlang, Haskell, Scala, OCaml, Clojure and others. If you’d like to give a short talk (3-10 minutes), please prepare and mention it at the beginning of the meeting so we can add you to the agenda. We’ll spend the rest of the time on open discussions, which will be awesome. The Portland Functional Programming Study Group and the Portland Scala Users Group meet regularly to discuss these sorts of topics. See http://pdxfunc.org/ and http://pdxscala.org/ for details. IMPORTANT: If you don’t already have a ticket for the Open Source Bridge conference, you’ll need to either buy one or register for a free “Community Pass” that will let you into the Friday unconference, Hacker Lounge and the evening BoFs: http://osbridge.eventbrite.com/

update Calagator::Event 1250460746 Portland Java User Group: Lean Mobile Data and Open Source: Storage, Messaging and Analysis Roll back

description This month's topic: Lean Mobile Data and Open Source: Storage, Messaging and Analysis This talk will provide a overview of Urban Airship's core data warehouse architecture - a system designed to handle capture, intake and analysis of data for 100s of millions of mobile devices with near real time precision. The talk will touch on Urban Airship's use of HBase, Hadoop Core, ZooKeeper, Kafka as well as home-grown services. Time permitting, the talk will also cover how Urban Airship takes a lean approach to working with volumes of data including the use of ad-hoc tools such as Pig and Cascading as well as how the company leverages the data architecture for fast customer discovery and innovations. ---------- Speaker: Erik Onnen Erik Onnen is the Hadoop and Analytics Lead at Urban Airship, the Portland-based leader in mobile application engagement services. He has over 10 years in distributed systems experience including the design and implementation of multiple "big data" systems. Erik joined Urban Airship in October of 2010, prior to that he was a Principal Engineer at Jive Software. ---------- PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :) Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up! Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, Trees restaurant in the same building). http://twitter.com/pjug http://pjug.org/ (join our mailing list, linked from the website!)
