This is an open discussion on all things about agile software development. This month:
At Renewable Funding, we recognize that a successful agile team depends on the
ability to constantly inspect and adapt its practices to changing
circumstances and new information. Over the past couple of years, our team has
made several notable changes to our process. Some were good ideas, while
others didn't work out as well; but we've managed to learn from these
experiences and grow as a team.
Several members of the Renewable Funding team will reflect on a few of our
"noble experiments"---such as our feature-branching release process and
90-minute iterations---in a round-table discussion that will touch both the
merits and drawbacks of these approaches and demonstrate the collaborative
effort we use to chart our course.

Portland Perl Mongers – Fearless Code Cleanup

speaker: Chad 'Exodist' Granum
Refactoring is something many developers approach with a great deal of fear. Sometimes you may need to refactor code that you do not understand. Sometimes there are no unit tests. Sometimes things can be scary.
Chad will be showing techniques for cleaning/refactoring code that will help avoid errors, and make things less scary. Ideally people will bring small/medium code samples or modules as examples. If nobody brings anything we may pull something off of cpan.
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab. |

Season 6, episode 1
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on FreeNode. One commit a week is all we ask.

SAO Ignite v2
Roll back
description |
If you had just five minutes to showcase your cutting-edge products, technologies, or methodologies, what would you say? What if you were forced to present those ideas with 20 PowerPoint slides that each rotated automatically after 15 seconds?
The Software Association of Oregon is hosting a second Ignite event on March 15th. As a speaker, you'll land a platform that challenges not only the way you present your ideas, but grants you access to an audience eager to listen. As an attendee, you'll learn about emerging, innovative, locally-sourced concepts while networking with a diverse and passionate crowd of like-minded, "early-adopters."
<b>What is Ignite?</b>
<a href="http://igniteshow.com/">Ignite</a> is a fast-paced geek event where speakers share their personal and professional passions via 20 Powerpoint slides each auto-advancing every 15 seconds, giving each speaker exactly 5 minutes of fame. Quick, fun, thought-provoking, social, local, global - Ignite is all of these and more. It satisfies the ADD in all of us. It's a high-energy evening of 5-minute talks by local people who have an idea - and the guts to get onstage and finally give that "elevator speech" we've all been told we need but rarely get to give.

ISSA Portland Chapter Meeting
Roll back

This topic will be presented by Braun Tacon:
Major Incident Handling: A foundational requirement for Organizational Risk Management
Major Incident Plans not only make good sense but are critical requirements driven by fiduciary responsibility, moral obligation and most importantly legislative and safety mandates.
Many organizations continue to do business with no Major Incident Handling plan in place as part of their overall Organizational Risk Management strategy. Worse yet, when it comes to addressing that gap, far too many choose to remain in denial leaving Major Incident planning for the proverbial, “…next fiscal year.”

PDMA Learning and Networking Event: CUSTOMER REQUIREMENTS â WHY DO WE GET IT WRONG?
Roll back
description |
While the need to understand the customerâs requirements is widely acknowledged, too many development efforts suffer from problems with the requirements. A common mistake includes capturing what the customer asks for at a high level, without really understanding the customer need and use model for the product. Many product failures can be attributed to not having a full understanding of what creates value for the customer. Fully understanding what customers value will make the product development process more productive and increase the likelihood of customer success and satisfaction.
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its January Learning and Networking Event. At this event, experienced professionals will discuss their experiences with understanding customer requirements, how to best understand their underlying need, what approaches work best for collaborating with the customer in creating requirements, and common mistakes to avoid.
*A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.*
**Moderator:** To be announced
### **Panelists**
### **Chris Dennis** â Managing Director, Steaming Kettle Consulting
### **Leo Fishberg** â Principle Architect, User Experience
### **Albrech Enders** â Owner and Principal at endersgroup
$20 on-line registration prior to the event
$25 at the door
A discount is available for PDMA members

The goal is to come together and make a video game, or non-digital game like a board game or card game. Participants rapidly prototype game designs and hopefully inject new ideas to help grow the game industry. We share a common theme and constraints. We ask participants to create a game from beginning to end in a prescribed time (maximum of 48 hours). The brief time span is meant to help encourage creative thinking to result in small but innovative and experimental games.

Meet Walmart Labs: Portlandâs Latest Mobile Powerhouse
Roll back
description |
Please RSVP at http://mobileportland.com/events/walmart-labs
The news that Walmart had acquired local iOS development agency Small Society surprised many people. Twitter was abuzz with questions like:
* Walmart has an office in Portland?
* Why did Walmart Labs decide to locate an office in Portland?
* What is Walmart Labs and what does it do?
* Why did Small Society decide to join Walmart Labs?
For those familiar with Ben Galbraith and Dion Almaer, these arenât new questions. After many years working for companies like Mozilla and Palm and starting the popular Ajaxian blog, Ben and Dion finally struck out on their own and created a company called SetDirection.
The company operated in stealth mode making many curious what Ben and Dion where working on. But within a few months, Ben and Dion announced the SetDirection had been acquired by Walmart and that they were going to lead Walmartâs mobile efforts.
Somethingâs up at Walmart Labs. Well-respected mobile professionals keep announcing that their careers have taken a surprising turn. It is clear that Walmart Labs has been assembling a fantastic teamâmany members of which call our fair city home.
Join us at Mobile Portland where we will hear from Ben and Dion what Walmart Labs does, what excited them about the opportunity, and why they chose Portland. Then Raven Zachary and James Keller, formerly co-founders of Small Society, will join Ben and Dion and talk about their decision to sell Small Society and join the Walmart Labs team.
Doors open for networking at 5:30. Meeting starts at 6 pm.
*About the Speakers*
*Dion Almaer, VP Mobile Architecture, Walmart.com*
Dion Almaer is a technologist who loves to code and build. He and his long time partner-in-crime Ben Galbraith recently brought their team to Walmart to power the mobile engineering efforts. He enjoys sharing his passion for software production across various communities, including a new property called FunctionSource.com.
Dion has been writing Web applications since it took over from Gopher. He has been fortunate enough to speak around the world, has published many articles, a book, and of course covers life the universe and everything on his blog at almaer.com/blog.
He has been called a human aggregator, and you can see that in full force if you follow him on Twitter @dalmaer.
*Ben Galbraith, Vice-President, Mobile Engineering, Walmart.com*
Ben Galbraith, together with his long-time friend Dion Almaer, forms one-half of the dynamic "Ben and Dion" duo that founded Ajaxian.com, headed Developer Tools at Mozilla, ran Developer Relations at Palm and is now running mobile architecture and engineering at Walmart.com after being acquired along with their start-up team in early 2011.
Ben's been writing code since he was six and starting businesses since he was ten; he's written books, given hundreds of award-winning presentations world-wide, produced a few technical conferences, sold three companies, and has held CEO, CIO, CTO, and Software Architect positions in the medical, publishing, media, consumer electronics, advertising, software and internet industries. He lives in Palo Alto with his wife and five children and blogs at FunctionSource.com.
*James Keller, Walmart.com*
James Keller is a digital communications strategist and user experience evangelist at Small Society, a small agency based in Portland with a passion for the iPhone⢠platform, dedicated to helping organizations bring great ideas to life. Before joining the Small Society team, James was at Wieden+Kennedy helping the Portland office align client business goals and brand experiences with emerging technologies.
Leveraging her extensive knowledge of interaction design, business analysis, campaign analytics, and integrated marketing communications, she has led multiple teams in creating efficient and effective online strategies for top brands such as Coca-Cola, NIKE, Procter & Gamble, Leviâs, LAIKA Studio, Zipcar, and the MTV Networks. She can frequently be seen at conferences speaking on topics such as information architecture, social media, and convergent culture.
*Raven Zachary, Walmart.com*
Raven Zachary is President of Small Society, working with big brands, established companies, investors, and startups on iPhone strategy and product development. Raven directed the Obama '08 for iPhone application for the Obama Campaign, and has worked with companies such as Whole Foods Market, Zipcar, CLIF BAR, and Air New Zealand on iPhone application initiatives. He is the founder of iPhoneDevCamp, a not-for-profit iPhone developer conference. Raven is also a Contributing Analyst with The 451 Group, an IT industry analyst firm and works closely with O'Reilly Media on iPhone and mobile technology related events and coverage. He is regularly quoted by the press about the iPhone market and is a frequent conference speaker on the topic. |

Career Coordinator Meg Kilmer will be hosting a Wednesday lunch meeting with our future game designer students. We are trying to form a team to compete in the Oregon Game Project Competition at PSU in March. Does anyone know of a parent or alum in this industry who could serve as a “coach” to this student club for three months? There are grant opportunities involved as well but we need a coach first to help our kids form a team. |

CHIFOO Presents: Missing the Point: The Expanding World of Gestural Interaction
Roll back

The paradigm of physical computing is well and truly hereâsensors and microcontrollers are getting cheaper and more robust, and they are easily programmable. Long associated with gaming, these sensors are making their way into our everyday âutilityâ devices. For example, think about the average smart phone: it likely contains a proximity sensor, an accelerometer/orientation sensor, an ambient light sensor, a gyroscopic sensor, and a moisture sensor. Cameras can recognize head motion and facial gestures; they can track body movements and compare them to motion models.
As these sensors become part of everyday interactive devices, we are ushering in new forms of gestural interaction, which is changing how we interact with digital experiences and data, and changing the nature of our computer-mediated communications. In this talk, Elizabeth will offer some observations and speculations on how the world of physical computing, broadly construed, is changing the way in which we interact with our devices, each other, and interactive digital experiences.
About the Speaker
Dr. Elizabeth Churchill is a Principal Research Scientist and manager of the Internet Experiences group at Yahoo! Research. Originally a psychologist by training, Elizabeth has focused throughout her career on understanding the ways in which people interactâwhether their interactions are primarily face-to-face or are technologically mediated. She has published within the areas of theoretical and applied psychology, cognitive science, human-computer interaction, and computer-supported cooperative work. Elizabeth has a BSc in Experimental Psychology and a MSc in Knowledge Based Systems, both from the University of Sussex, and a PhD in Cognitive Science from the University of Cambridge. She regularly teaches at the University of California, Berkeleyâs School of Information. In 2010, she was recognized as a Distinguished Scientist by the Association for Computing Machinery. She is the current Vice President of the Association of Computing Machineryâs (ACM) Special Interest Group on Computer Human Interaction (SigCHI).
