âBy simplifying income tax laws for people to have more equal lives, everyone will be more comfortable, able to live more humanly.â
Our weekly Tuesday civics meetings are a structured Q&A, hosted at Collective Agency, open to the public to ask questions and share-and-learn perspectives about this membership organization and about tax in Oregon overall, and the real effects of the real numbers on peopleâs lives.
Many people donât understand anything about tax in society, including myself four months ago before I started learning. Many people do. Weâll learn together. The end result will be an amendment to the Oregon constitution.

Winter Coders' Social - Sixth Annual Edition
Roll back
| description |
Join Portland's tech community in celebrating the end of another year. This is a fun, free annual event where members of local user groups and their families are invited to mingle, eat and play games. This is the fifth time the event's been held and it's lots of fun every time.
We'll have a potluck, so you're welcome to bring something yummy to share with others. If possible, label your food and whether it meets particular dietary needs, e.g. "vegan", "vegetarian", gluten-free", etc. If you'd like, tell others what you plan to bring, or see what others are bringing at http://goo.gl/akjFi. We'll provide beverages, plates, cups, utensils and napkins.
Like games? Bring your favorites and play them with others. We'll have some rooms with tables set aside. Have an activity or contest that you'd like to organize? Join the discussion at https://groups.google.com/group/pdxgroups.
Please spread the word, all are welcome. See you there!
PS: We're grateful to <a href="http://urbanairship.com/">Urban Airship </a>, <a href="http://myemma.com/meet-us/work-here">Emma</a>, <a href="http://shopigniter.com/">ShopIgniter</a> and <a href="http://piepdx.com/">Portland Incubator Experiment (PIE)</a> for sponsoring this event. |

We'll have a potluck, so you're welcome to bring something yummy to share with others. If possible, label your food and whether it meets particular dietary needs, e.g. "vegan", "vegetarian", gluten-free", etc. If you'd like, tell others what you plan to bring, or see what others are bringing at http://bit.ly/winter-social-2012-potluck.
PS: We're grateful to <a href="http://urbanairship.com/">Urban Airship </a> for sponsoring this event. |

Social capital is a key concept for thinking community enrichment, resource building and the social structure of networks.
How does this concept work in games and 3D spaces? What happens to social capital when communities move into persistent digital worlds? Does digitizing social capital fundamentally transform our sense of place and connectivity?
Join us as University of Oregon professor Donna Davis shares insights of a multiyear ethnographic study of digital social capital in 3D online spaces.
She will also discuss her current research, joined by Barbie Alchemi, founder of Creations for Parkinson’s, Second Life’s Parkinson’s support group dedicated to working with people with Parkinson's while raising money and awareness of the disease and for the Michael J. Fox Foundation.
Location: Take elevator to 3R, Turnbull Center's Pape Forum

November 8th Rose City SPIN Seminar
Mindful Engineering
Presented by Lindsay Van Driel
Dates/Times: Thursday, November 8, 2012: Networking @ 5:30-6:30 PM; Seminar 6:30-7:30 PM
Location: OTBC (Oregon Technology Business Center), 8305 SW Creekside Place, Suite C, Beaverton, Oregon, 97008, 2nd floor
Abstract:
Mindfulness refers to one’s ability to sustain attention, in a particular way, in the present moment and non-judgmentally. Although it may sound easy, five minutes of practice proves how tricky this can be. The conditions of modern life and the modern work place, with our hyper-connectivity, continue to erode our ability to willfully focus our attention. Mindfulness is based in the wisdom of ancient traditions, but modernized and secularized to reach its contemporary corporate audience. With academia leading the way, some 180 business schools across the world offer education and training in the field of mindfulness, most notably at Harvard, Stanford and the University of Michigan. Google created a program as a part of their employee development offerings dedicated to mindfulness and emotional intelligence. It is now accompanied by a NYT best-selling book of the same name as the course, Search Inside Yourself, as well as an industry wide conference pulling top tech CEO’s, innovators, authors and philosophers together for two days a year to discuss the importance of mindfulness. Intel’s Awake Inside program seeks to deliver the mindfulness teachings to employees, to relieve stress and build emotional resiliency and competency. As the technology industry continues to shape-shift, large firms are forced to constantly reinvent themselves to stay relevant. Intel’s program, dedicated to Mindful Engineering, is designed to teach employees the skills to look deeply within themselves for the answers to today’s most pressing issues. The program has proven to yield results in both personal and professional contexts, with the ultimate goal of promoting an overall sense of well-being in the individual.
Bio:
Lindsay Van Driel is a Business Operations Manager inside the Business Client Platform Division of Intel Corporation. She holds a Masters in Business and Administration from Arizona State University. Additionally, she is a registered Yoga and Meditation Teacher with the International Yoga Alliance. She joined Intel in the Fall of ’99 and has been there since, holding various positions inside the company’s vast engineering structure. Coinciding with her duties in Business Operations, she currently teaches both Yoga and Meditation on site at Intel and has founded Intel’s Awake Inside Program. This program is dedicated to realizing mindfulness in the midst of the corporate work experience and specifically in the field of engineering.

Software Defined Networking (SDN) replaces dedicated network hardware with standards based software running on servers that implements the control plane of switches and routers. Dr. Turbyfill, Director of Engineering at The Applied Research Center for Computer Networks (ARCCN), a non-profit organization, located in the Skolkovo Innovation Center, Russiaâs answer to Silicon Valley, will discuss ARCCNâs SDN work and ARCCNâs relationship with Skolkovo.
The Skolkovo Innovation Centre goal is âto concentrate international intellectual capital, thereby stimulating the development of break-through projects and technologies.â
ARCCN is focused on creating enabling technologies for the next generation of computer technology. Its vision is to develop a world class Russian center specializing in SDN âto commoditize network hardware and provide a standard-based application development platform taking much of the features and functionality that exist inside custom proprietary software and driving it into an open SDN space.â OpenFlow is an example of SDN. "OpenFlow offers a standard-based Application Programming Interface or API that links an Ethernet switch and a controller. This offers a model in which layer 2 Ethernet switches are low-cost merchant silicon based devices where flows are directed by a centralized controller(s). ARCCN is building collaborative relationships with international academic, research and commercial organizations to achieve its goals.
A light dinner of pizza and beverage will be supplied.

Glass Plate GAme
Roll back
| description |

The Glass Plate Game, inspired by Hermann Hesse's Glass Bead Game, is essentially a conversation in the trappings of a board game. The idea is to spark creative and interesting dialog as the players explore connections between ideas against a dynamic mosaic map. There are no winners or losers. There is no order of play. Conversation continues throughout, and anyone can make a move at any time. The end result is an artifact of the conversation. The "game board" makes it easy to follow the twists and turns of the conversation.
This time the game will be played with a theme: Arts.

Applications due for FounderDating's Portland chapter. This is the second round of applications, so if you were rejected last time, feel free to re-apply.
FounderDating (FD) is an invite-only, online network for entrepreneurs to connect with cofounders. What makes them different?
High Quality - members are carefully screened for quality and readiness (no recruiters, etc.) Applications and members’ identities are confidential, but a few of the folks who are part of the network are former founders or early employees from: stackmob, snapfish, Zynga, Loggly and Gilt just to name a few.
Balanced - 50% engineering & 50% non-engineering
Reach-- FD’s online network allows you to connect with people in your city and beyond to share ideas and begin building something you’re passionate about.
No Idea Necessary - FD is about the people, so you don’t need to have an idea, just be ready to work on a serious side project
