PSU Tech Talk: Lifecycle of the common software developer
Roll back
| description |
Lifecycle of the common software developer: a field study of the habit, environment, and community of several pacific northwest "programmers" as they progress through their professional life.
Synopsis
-------------
The common household developer â homo sapiens sapiens mollis â has an interesting lifecycle; tending to be only about 8-16 years long and accomplishing great tasks, then either retiring or quitting in a rage to create public art. But their formation is largely a source of confusion, and their practices during their lifetime are mysterious. We trekked into the depths of Portland to discover their habits, the environments their flourish in, and the odd communities that they create and survive within. In particular, we study one specimen who was particularly attracted to glitter (which we had in great abundance) and taught him proper english so that he could communicate with us; if we're especially lucky he will make a guest appearance to answer questions.
About the speaker
-------------------------
Chuck Lauer Vose is the lead instructor at the Portland Code School and a senior software developer focusing in Drupal and Ruby. His love of glitter and party hats has been well documented, but he can also be found programming professionally and helping people become better developers in his free time. He is an organizer for the pdx.rb user group (as much as it is organizable), and he likes ducks. |

Introduction to Ruby Bootcamp
This two-day bootcamp introducing Ruby is for intermediate learners who have a solid grounding in HTML and CSS but would like to take advantage of dynamic data. We will cover principles of object-oriented programming and making web applications with Sinatra. We will cover Ruby basics and syntax, installation, use, and research of gems, bundler, and code interpolation.
This class will help to demystify the larger frameworks like Rails and prepare you for more advanced projects. It is ideal for people who have been dabbling with PHP or Rails, or for front-end developers or QA engineers who want to push themselves further in their careers.
There will be time from 3pm â 5pm on Saturday to stay later and work with others in the class to complete projects.
Pre-requisites: You will need to bring your own laptop for this bootcamp. Students taking this course should have already taken the Intro workshop or demonstrated their abilities by deploying a hand-made website to a server on the internet.
Dates: 5/16/13 & 5/18/13
Times: Thursday 5 â 9pm & Saturday 10 â 3pm (lunch provided on Saturday)
Early Bird registration fee: $540
Early Bird Registration Deadline: April 26th by 5:00pm
Late registration fee: $800

May CAKE (Case) Study
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Last year we gathered weekly to share useful business tips that could be implemented immediately. In 2013 our workshops are changing to a new monthly format. This time we’ll gather monthly to share lessons learned working with a Portland-based business and present the results of our work in the form of a case study.
Each month will feature a different local business.
Why should you join us?
If you can identify with any of the following scenarios, you should stop what you’re doing and reserve yourself a seat for an upcoming CAKE:
You have a great idea for a business.
You have just started developing a business.
You have a hobby you want to make money from.
You own an existing business and are feeling overwhelmed.
You’re just a really awesome person who enjoys eating cake (the edible kind).
*Don’t take our word for it, people really like us…*
“Since the first CAKE workshop that I attended, I’ve gone back as often as my schedule allows. The two hosts, as well as all the participants have great input and advice to offer, and they offer somewhat unconventional advice on how to start up a business with a more ‘boot-strap’ approach.“
-Grant Bernard (Blurble)
“CAKE provides, not just vague conceptual pieces of inspirations, but tangible information in order for you to confidently and with ease take the next step to grow your business.”
-Akiko Oguchi (5th Season: Clothing Reborn) |

PDXScala Monthly Meeting
Roll back
| description |
Come join other Scala fans, whether you're a seasoned oldtimer or complete beginner. We'll have open discussions and a variety of presentations and examples. If you have topics you're interested in hearing more about or something you'd like to give a presentation on, please let us know! Also, feel free to bring code you'd like to show off or get input on from the rest of the group.
We'll have pizza at 6, so if you're planning to join us, come early if you're hungry! |
→ |
Hey folks, it's that time again. We'll have some great beginner friend material courtesy of Rob Norris along with time for general questions and answers for any one who's just getting started with Scala and wants to know how more experienced Scala developers might do things. In addition, Kevin Scaldeferri will be giving a bit of a preview of the material for the talk he'll be giving at Lambdajam (http://lambdajam.com/sessions#scaldeferri) later this summer, covering
"using the cake pattern to bridge the divide between unit testing and functional testing." We'll have pizza and we welcome attendees whether you're deep in the Scala world or just passing by and wanting to see what all this functional programming in the OO world is about. |

Join us for the "free swim" of PDX Quantified Self meetings!
Work and talk in a space with other QSers. If you've got a pile of data you've been meaning to get to but just haven't devoted a block of time to it, bring it to the Co-Lab. Other data-interested people will be there for you to share with, get inspired by, and to get help from.
Wank to talk about QS-related ideas? Drop by for a chat, and maybe start or join a QS-related project.
Thinking of presenting something at our bi-monthly Show and Tell? Hone your presentation during this time, bounce ideas off of people, and get early feedback and encouragement.
Like to talk QS? This is the Meetup for you. We'll do intros, 60 minutes of The Scrambler (an activity to encourage small groups of conversation) and then conversation free-for-all!
All are welcome (and fresh perspectives encouraged).
See you there! |

Cleanweb Hackathon: A call for software developers, designers or innovators
Roll back
| description |
If the idea of potentially winning $3500 and a client contract while solving environmental issues sounds great to you, come to join the first Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland.
The Cleanweb Hackathon in Portland, Oregon kicking off Friday 5/17 at Earth Advantage will bring together software developers, designers and entrepreneurs for a weekend to brainstorm solutions that address global resource constraints.
In less than 30 hours, a dozen teams will create apps that tackle energy, waste, water, transportation and other sustainability issues by leveraging web, mobile and social media technologies. Teams will be equipped with datasets, APIs, food and coffee; presenting their prototypes to a select panel of judges on Sunday afternoon.
At the Friday night kick-off social, the local organizing team will discuss the project ideas to focus developers on solving key issues given by the city and other public and private sector partners. On Saturday morning, participantsâ teams will assemble at Earth Advantage for a briefing on API and datasets before beginning development of their applications. The hackathon will conclude Sunday with teams presenting their apps to investors and infotech industry leaders in the hope of winning the first prize of $3,500. Participants will also get a chance to mingle with the sponsors, judges and press. Presentations and awards session will begin at 3:00 PM PST.
The Cleanweb Hackathon Series began in San Francisco in September 2011, which was a sold-out event with over a hundred participants that resulted in fourteen software and mobile applications. Cleanweb later mushroomed into a global movement with community spawning movement in over a dozen cities around North America and Europe and most recently the formation of The Cleanweb Initiative, a new non-profit industry association.

On Saturday morning, participantsâ teams will assemble at Earth Advantage for a briefing on API and datasets before beginning development of their applications. The hackathon will conclude Sunday with teams presenting their apps to investors and infotech industry leaders in the hope of winning the cash prize.
