He will most likely be talking about digital surveillance and physical privacy. A little more about him: Kees Cook has been working with Free Software since 1994, and has been a Debian Developer since 2007. He is currently employed by Google to work on Chrome OS Security. From 2006 through 2011 he worked for Canonical as the Ubuntu Security Team's Tech Lead, and remains on the Ubuntu Technical Board. Before that, he worked at OSDL where he helped admin the mirrors at kernel.org, and sometimes hacked on Inkscape. He has written various utilities including GOPchop and Sendpage, and contributes randomly to other projects including fun chunks of code in Wine, MPlayer, OpenSSH,and Wireshark. He's been spending most of his time lately focused on security features in the Linux Kernel.

update Calagator::Event 1250464510 ChickTech Problem-Storming for Nonprofits Roll back

description Let's use our skills to make our community a better place for women and girls! Are you a woman interested in brainstorming and creating solutions for a nonprofit? We're bringing in nonprofits who are focused on women and girls (or issues that women and girls struggle with) who have something that they've been struggling with...and our goal is to have a viable solution for each of them by the end of the weekend! Although each project will have a tech component, women with expertise in many different areas wil be vital to creating a solid and successful solution. Each team will consist of 7-10 women with a variety of backgrounds. Some of the areas the teams will need expertise in include technology, nonprofits, marketing, business, psychology, education, and design. We'll kick off with heavy hors d'oeuvres Friday evening and everyone will choose their projects and meet their team members. Saturday and Sunday, it's all up to the teams to create something amazing! At 4pm Sunday, we'll hear from each team about their solution, and we'll adjourn at 5:30. Also, we'd love to hear ideas on how to help teams continue working on their projects for the nonprofits! A light breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided Saturday and Sunday. Childcare will be provided on-site. And we would *love* to have some supportive techie guys help out with the childcare in order to break yet another stereotype! We're hoping to have some fun, hands-on activities for the kids too, depending on ages (and age ranges). Please let us know if you have a nonprofit you think would like to be involved and get some free problem-solving, or if you'd like to be a volunteer and help to organize this event. All people who identify as women are welcome, although we have set a lower limit on age to 15. However, we are open to persuasion...if you are a young woman under 15, feel free to contact us. Sliding scale fee. All fees collected are donations that go to paying for the costs associated with this event. Anything above cost keeps ChickTech K-12 programs free for their participants. ChickTech's fiscal sponsor is TechStart, a registered 501c3. Event Schedule Friday: 6:30p - 9p hors d'oeuvres, choose projects, meet teams! Saturday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work with teams, lunch, more work! Sunday: 9:30a - 5:30p breakfast, work, lunch, work, present (not the noun, the verb)! update Calagator::Event 1250464503 International NodeBots Day 2013--PDX Roll back

description This is not a hackathon. There will be no prizes other than the satisfaction of making something awesome! There will be very little in the way of talks. We're going to get together, collaborate and hack. This is more NodeConf SummerCamp than NodeConf. Sharing. Enjoying each other's company. Learning and exploring. And JavaScript. Lots of JavaScript. We want to show that node is an all-purpose, fun tool by showing its potential with hardware. How? By bringing together those interested in node and hardware hacking, and giving them an open space to hack, collaborate, learn, and share their results with others. What Cool Stuff can I do? Checkout the Johnny-Five examples for some examples of cool stuff to do with Node and Arduino. For more info on NodeBots and preparing yourself for the ensuing awesomeness: http://nodebots.io/ Stay tuned as we'll be updating regularly. REGISTRATION COMING SOON. This is not a hackathon. description nil Join us for the "free swim" of PDX Quantified Self meetings! Work and talk in a space with other QSers. If you've got a pile of data you've been meaning to get to but just haven't devoted a block of time to it, bring it to the Co-Lab. Other data-interested people will be there for you to share with, get inspired by, and to get help from. Wank to talk about QS-related ideas? Drop by for a chat, and maybe start or join a QS-related project. Thinking of presenting something at our bi-monthly Show and Tell? Hone your presentation during this time, bounce ideas off of people, and get early feedback and encouragement. We do a round of intros at the beginning to find out what people are interested in doing/talking about, and then people are free to break up, gather together, work, talk, and see what other people are working on. See you there!

Special guests Shane Torres (Portland’s Funniest Person 2013), Sean Jordan and Amy Miller will hang out to crack jokes via text with you and a few hundred of your best friends! update Calagator::Event 1250464430 Drupal Users Group Meetup Roll back

description This crazy Portland heatwave must be getting to me, because we're totally mixing things up for the July Drupal user group! 1. We've got free pizza thanks to the fine folks at <a href="http://www.lullabot.com">Lullabot</a> & <a href="http://drupalize.me">Drupalize.me</a> and free beer & drinks thanks to OpenSourcery. So we'll start off the meetup with 30 minutes of socializing and eating (and even some pinballing!). If you or your company would like to sponsor pizza for future DUGs, drop a comment below. 2. No presenters at this months meetup. We'll be breaking up into teams and competing for 1 hour to make the most awesome, fun, random Drupal site using the mystery set of modules provided. Each site will need building, coding and theming of all levels in order to win, so everyone from the n00best-of-sitebuilders to the most experienced Drupal core contributor can help their team. 3. I know that fame and karma are pretty big motivators in the Drupal community, but in case those aren't enough, we'll also have prizes for the winners. The OReilly people have donated a 3 day pass to <a href="http://www.oscon.com/oscon2013">OSCon</a> that we'll be giving away along with some other goodies. So remember to bring a laptop and come hungry... for pizza and to win! We'll still be heading to the Lucky Lab NW on Quimby & 19th after the meetup for continued socializing and revelry. update Calagator::Event 1250464346 Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting: Fluent Refactoring, and more! Roll back

description Thanks to CrowdCompass for hosting Ruby meetings every Tuesday! PRESENTATIONS * Markus Roberts: Ruby Hangman * David Celis and Ben Weintraub talk about interesting performance issues. * Sam Livingston-Gray: Fluent Refactoring > Fluency is "what you can say without having to think about how to say it." Refactoring is a language that describes ways you can make your code better. I want to inspire you to learn more of that language, so you can make your code better without having to think about it. > I'll walk through the process of reworking a 50-line controller action that resists comprehension, let alone refactoring. We'll discover how to tease apart some fiendishly intertwined code, embrace duplication, use dirty tricks to our advantage, and uncover responsibilities that weren't obvious when we started. > NOTE TO PDX.rb: I'll be giving this talk at Lone Star Ruby Conf in a few weeks. This will be a full run-through of the work in progress—slides may be incomplete, points may be muddled, jokes may not be *quite* as funny as they should be, and (time permitting) I'll ask you for feedback and suggestions at the end. > This presentation will be given without warranty of any kind, either expressed or implied, including, but not limited to, the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose. Listen at your own risk. ;> <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there! </i> Thanks to CrowdCompass for hosting Ruby meetings every Tuesday!
