create Calagator::Event 1250465170 [Free] Build your First Mobile App in One Day with HTML5, jQuery, PhoneGap Usergrid - Portland! Roll back

description nil Join us for a free one-day training course to learn everything you need to know to build your first mobile app — with HTML5+PhoneGap+jQuery+Usergrid! As taken by over 3,000 people in San Francisco, New York, Austin, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Seattle and more! The classes are completely free (and all the software services we’ll be using are too — most of them are even open-source)     This class will teach you everything you need to build a mobile app for iOS or Android – as well as Windows Phone, Blackberry or a mobile browser. In addition to reviewing important mobile features of HTML5 and Javascript, you will also learn how to use a mobile UI framework (jQuery Mobile), how to add app features with a Backend-as-a-Service (open-source Usergrid) and how to deploy your app to devices natively using PhoneGap. By the end of the workshop, we will have built a fully-featured app, ready for release on the app store, without having written a single line of server-side code! Pre-requisites A laptop: minimum OS requirements are Mac OS X 10.5.8, Windows XP, or any linux that supports JDK6 Basic understanding of HTML CSS and some programming experience (ideally in JavaScript and jQuery, but not  necessarily): it may be useful for you to go through the following Codecademy lessons to brush up before you attend: classes 1–3 of the Web course, classes 1–6 of the JavaScript course and classes 1–5 of the jQuery course. A working install of PhoneGap/Cordova. Please download PhoneGap and complete the “Platform Guide” for your preferred platform (iOS, Android, etc.) ahead of the class. Schedule 8:30am: Doors open — registration and coffee Intro HTML5 and Mobile Apps Building a mobile user interface with jQuery Mobile Loading live data into your app (Usergrid) noon: Lunch break (provided by Apigee) Writing live data from your app Package and launch your app natively on iOS or Android with PhoneGap Using advanced features like geolocation 4pm: Q and drinkup! (Beers provided by Apigee.)         About the Instructor   Greg is a Developer Evangelist at Apigee. TiE Pearl Pitch Club is designed as a supportive environment in which to try out your presentation - in front of a group of peers, including established entrepreneurs, and others just getting their start. Bring your pitches, with or without slides (bring your laptop to plug into the A/V system), and walk away with valuable feedback and coaching. Following the Pitch Club session we will offer drinks and refreshments at the TiE Pearl Incubator, while we discuss feedback and mingle.

If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 28th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the tool booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." Go in there, and ride on up to the 28th floor. You'll easily find the bike parking. create Calagator::Event 1250465161 Portland Perl Mongers - ØMQ Sockets and Perl Roll back

description nil ØMQ Sockets in Perl Speaker: Anthony Johnson Part message queue, part socket implementation sugar, ØMQ can be used to simplify socket communication and to scale out applications, and you don't even have to worry about the awful parts of socket communication. But more aptly and straight from the horse's mouth: > ØMQ (also seen as ZeroMQ, 0MQ, zmq) looks like an embeddable networking library but acts like a concurrency framework. It gives you sockets that carry atomic messages across various transports like in-process, inter-process, TCP, and multicast. You can connect sockets N-to-N with patterns like fanout, pub-sub, task distribution, and request-reply. It's fast enough to be the fabric for clustered products. Its asynchronous I/O model gives you scalable multicore applications, built as asynchronous message-processing tasks. It has a score of language APIs and runs on most operating systems. ØMQ is from iMatix and is LGPLv3 open source. Find out what ØMQ is, where to use it, and learn about common patterns, pitfalls, and how it can be used for building anti-RESTful APIs. Anthony will elaborate on what it took to build a scaled out application and API using Python, Perl, and ØMQ. As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub. create Calagator::Event 1250465160 When & How to Successfully Use Test Automation for Mobile Apps Roll back

description nil Reliable, well-engineered test automation is often a mythical goal that developers agree is a good idea, but in reality don't have the time and resources to execute properly. Considering the number of apps on the market and the fickleness of customers (after 2 crashes 84% will go elsewhere) testing is imperative just to stay relevant today. We will dispel the myth that automation solves all QA issues and eliminates the need for manual testing and QA teams. Machines are great at testing mind-numbing repetitive tasks and humans are great at testing user experience, and when manual and automated tests are used in conjunction the outcome is a better app. We’ll cover how to identify what should be automated and what shouldn’t. Fortunately best practices, strategies, and tools are emerging to cope with this difficult topic, and our talk will break them down across the following topics: :: Developing an Automation Strategy: When what and where to automate :: Automation tools: An overview of different tools and type of automated tests available This talk is for mobile app developers and QA teams who are interested in learning more about automated testing on iOS and Android.

create Calagator::Event 1250465159 PDX Big Data Discussion Group Roll back

description nil "No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it." We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately. This month's paper is [Ad Click Prediction: a View from the Trenches](https://static.googleusercontent.com/external_content/untrusted_dlcp/research.google.com/en/us/pubs/archive/41159.pdf) by McMahan et al. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely. Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions.
