create Calagator::Event 1250458465 PDX TechCoffee Roll back

description nil EPISODE #5! Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks! TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference. So bring your laptops and your work ethic to the 3rd weekly PDX TechCoffee. One commit a week is all we ask. NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by.

create Calagator::Event 1250458463 Galois Tech Talk Roll back

description nil Building Refactoring Tools for Functional Languages Details: * Presenter: Prof. Simon Thompson * Date: Thursday, March 25, 2010 * Time: 10:30am Abstract: Refactoring is the process of changing the design of a program without changing what it does. Typical refactorings, such as function extraction and generalisation, are intended to make a program more amenable to extension, more comprehensible and so on. Refactorings differ from other sorts of program transformation in being applied to source code (rather than within the bowels of a compiler), and in having an effect across a code base. Because of this, there is a need to give (semi-)automated support to the process. This talk will reflect on our experience of building tools to refactor functional programs written in Haskell (HaRe?) and Erlang (Wrangler). In doing this we will address system design, the pragmatics of system take-up, as well as contrasting the style of refactoring and tooling for Haskell and Erlang. Bio: Simon Thompson is a Professor of Logic and Computation at the University of Kent.

create Calagator::Event 1250458462 Galois Tech Talk Roll back

description nil Galois is pleased to host two tech talks on Wed., March 24. Visualization and Diversity Information Details: * Presenter: Prof. Ron Metoyer * Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010 * Time: 10:30am Abstract: The term “diversity’’ is used in many ways in many domains. People are concerned about the diversity of their work force, stock portfolios, student body, and forest insects, just to name a few. In this talk, I will discuss a work-in-progress visualization technique specifically designed to communicate diversity information. I will present the design concerns, resulting visualizations, and a study design for evaluating the method. I will conclude with a discussion of a case-study application to moth species data. Bio: Ronald Metoyer is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Oregon State University. He earned a Ph.D. from the Georgia Institute of Technology where he worked in the Graphics, Visualization and Usability Center with a focus on modeling and visualizing the motion of pedestrians in urban and architectural scenes. Dr. Metoyer currently co-directs the NVIDIA Graphics and Imaging Technologies Lab (GAIT) with his colleagues at OSU. His past research efforts have involved the investigation of techniques for manipulating motion capture data and for facilitating the creation of 3D content by end users with the goal of empowering domain experts to create compelling and interactive content for their domain specific needs. In 2002, he received an NSF CAREER Award for his work in “Understanding the Complexities of Animated Content”. Dr. Metoyer’s most recent research interests fall under the domain of information visualization. ------------------------------ TITLE: TBA Details: * Presenter: Prof. Mike Bailey * Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010 * Time: 11:00am Abstract: TBA Bio: Mike Bailey is a Professor in Computer Science at Oregon State University. He specializes in scientific visualization, 3D interactive computer graphics, GPU programming, stereographics, and computer aided geometric design.

update Calagator::Event 1250458453 pdxfiber's Reach Portland: Play in the world's largest "telephone game" Roll back

description Portland Attempts World Record to get Google’s attention. World’s longest “Telephone Game” needs only 700 people. A group of citizens are organizing the world’s longest “Telephone Game” as an attempt to get the attention of Google. The Technology giant has put out a Request For Information (RFI) to municipalities who may be interested in partnering with Google to install a 1 gigabyte fiber optic network that will serve 50,000 to 500,000 homes. The RFI has already caused quite a stir among cities large and small across America. In an attempt to gain the favor of the company, one city, Topeka, Kansas decided to change its name to Google for a day. The City of Portland is taking the proposal seriously and will be adopting a resolution Wednesday, March 17th to provide a proposal to the search engine colossus. The project would be a significant undertaking for Google. Estimates are that they would need to spend hundreds of millions of dollars to lay a fiber optic network in most cities, whereas in Portland, City efforts to facilitate it have already tilled the fields for high-speed broadband. The significance of the project is that it would provide speeds of one hundred times greater than is available today in the United States, potentially spurring innovative, revenue generating businesses and jobs in the city that is awarded the prize. A group of citizens in the technology and creative industries clusters have joined in the effort to “Woo the Goog”, since the RFI states that citizen involvement will be a deciding factor in awarding the fiber network. The Game will stretch from Pioneer Courthouse Square, and attempt to cross the Steel Bridge to the steps of the Rose Garden arena. The event will begin at 9am Saturday March 20th, and the record-breaking Telephone game attempt will start at the east side of the Steel Bridge at 9:30, reaching Mayor Sam Adams in Pioneer Courthouse Square at approximately 10:30. All who are interested are encouraged to meet at the corner of NW Couch and Naito Parkway. description nil Portland Attempts World Record to get Google’s attention. All who are interested are encouraged to meet at the corner of NW Couch and Naito Parkway. description nil The Pacific Northwest College of Art (PNCA) empowers artists and designers to reimagine what art and design can do in the world. This private fine arts and design college, founded in 1909 in Portland, Oregon, offers ten Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) degrees and six graduate degrees including master of fine arts (MFA) and master of arts (MA) degrees. Dr. Donald Tuski serves as the school's president. PNCA is home to the Center for Contemporary Art & Culture which hosts exhibitions with artists such as James Rosenquist and Cauleen Smith. The college welcomes the community in each month for First Thursday arts celebrations showcasing student work and throughout the year with free public lectures by nationally-recognized visual artists, designers, and scholars. The recently launched Make + Think + Code, a center for art and technology, hosts artists- and technologists-in-residence as well as numerous art-tech community events. At PNCA students learn to better understand the work they make and how it can make an impact in the world. Students hone skills and are introduced to entirely new ways of making. Just as importantly, they learn to think critically about their own work and that of others. PNCA graduates are working artists who show internationally; successful, creative, small-business owners; animators and designers working for top firms such as LAIKA, Nike, Weiden + Kennedy; professional printers working for studios like Gemini G.E.L.; freelance illustrators with high-profile commissions; and commercial photographers. PNCA is an accredited institutional member of both the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). In addition we are affiliated with the following: Association of Independent Colleges of Art & Design (AICAD) National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU) Art Resources Consortium Northwest (ARC NW) Oregon Independent College Association (OICA) Foundations in Art: Theory and Education (FATE)

description Details to come... We're going to just have a casual meeting this month, so we can hang out, talk about whatever project or bit of code has captured your attention of late, and drink beer. We'll be meeting concurrently with the fine folks at the PDX Weekly Hackathon, so there should be plenty of discussion of quite a varied nature. Feel free to come out and hack on things, of course!
