Portland Accessibility and User Experience Meetup (PDX A11Y UX) - Accessibility testing with Natalia Voegele
Roll back
| description |
Ever wonder about how to use and test all of the different accessibility tools and devices? Natalia Voegele will tell us all about her personal story, and how & why she got started with accessibility testing. She’ll give us a sample of different tools, from Android and iOS devices to Braille displays and Chromebooks. Learn about some of the common problems encountered while testing and what to do about them. We’ll also have some time for questions and hands-on work.
About the speaker, in her own words:
I am Natalia Voegele. An ambitious, strong, 36-year-old woman who happens to be blind. I have always loved technology. In addition to working, passions of mine include mental health, the environment, reading, traveling, singing, cooking, baking and spending time with those I love. I am in the process of writing a book about my life and creating an album.

Thursdays are open house night here at CTRL-H. Jon and Melinda are available during this time to give guided tours, answer questions and show you all that the hackerspace has to offer.
We don't have an opening ceremony or any formal meeting. This is a time for you to eavesdrop on other peoples projects and get support on a project that you may need help with. Bring your laptop, projects, inventions, your technical toys and your broken microwave to CTRL-H and hack with friends. |

Hey everybody. Got a bug you just can't land? Is there a recent CVE you've been eyeballing seductively? Just want to brush up on your APPSEC or OPSEC? Do none of the above questions make any sense, but you're interested in computer security?
PDX Exploit Workshop is the longest running security meetup in Portland (10 years!). It's an open, self driven event for people interested in computer security. Whether you're a novice or career professional, all are welcome. It's always a good time to learn about security!
We spend this dedicated time each week researching and exploring topics of software and hardware security as well as working on personal and group projects. Occasionally we have presentations on our findings. Bring a willingness to learn, a curiosity about security, and/or a specific area of interest to share with others.
This group meets in the PDX Hackerspace mainspace which has comfy seating, deluxe wifi (thanks Kyle!), Club Mate soda in the snack shack, and hackable LED displays to play around with.
p.s. This event is open to everyone! No ^H membership is required to attend. All are welcome. That means you! |

Coffee w/ Co-Founders - Early Stage Fundraising Panel
Roll back
| description |

Fundraising for your early stage startup is difficult. It's made even more difficult with the recent trend of smaller pre-revenue funding in the region. This month we will sit down with some area panelist to discuss funding trends, funding alternatives, and what can be done to get early stage companies better access to capital that can help take their companies to the next level.
This will be a "leave your feelings at the door" conversation. We will touch on what is really to blame for the lack of early stage funding access. Whether that means looking at local and regional funding resources that seemed to have dried up, to whether founders have companies that are investible.
Panelists:
Josh Carter - Manager, WeWork Labs (Moderator)
Nicole Schmidt - CEO/Co-Founder @ krowdsourced
Geoff Harris - Partner @ Flying Fish VC
Ross Barbieri - Angel Investor/EiR @ Portland State's Business Accelerator
About Coffee w/ Co-Founders: As a business owner you are faced with many challenges. You're forced to make decisions every day that could make or break your business. Coffee w/ Co-Founders is a way to network with other Entrepreneurs to allow free flowing information with the intent to collaborate and help each other. So often we're challenged and there's very little we can do to express our challenges with the people we work with or the people we care about. Think of Coffee w/ Co-Founders as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help! |

Digital Transformation and the Future of Business

Announcing the new MIT Enterprise Forum, Portland, Oregon Chapter!
Topic: Digital Transformation and the Future of Business
Did you know that:
97% of consumers search online to find a local business?
46% of Google searches are seeking local information?
88% of consumer local business searches on a mobile device result in a call or visit to the business within 24 hours?
The digital age rewards change and punishes doing nothing. It is no longer, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” How are companies adapting to the changed (and changing) world, being the disrupters rather than the disrupted?
Join us to hear four dynamo panelists how their companies drive digital transformations and how they successfully digitally transformed their businesses. From SEO/SEM to mobile native and electronic transactions we will discuss the trends and findings that shape the future of business.
Schedule: Tuesday, September 17, 2019
5:30 PM Doors open / Enjoy a hosted bar with beer and wine (21+ must show ID)
6:30 PM Program begins
8:00 PM Program concludes
Panelists include:
John Jerome, Founder, and CEO, Jerome, Bruhn & Associates
Mike Barrett, Co-founder, and CRO, Unosquare
Jason Thane, Co-founder, GenUI

When Workplace Stress Becomes a Mental Health Struggle
Many of us live and/or work on the west side of the Portland metro area and may not have a convenient professional community nearby. Thanks to support from PDXWIT and Salesforce, on October 16 we will get together in Hillsboro to talk about mental health.
In addition to our usual networking format, a representative from Salesforce will tell us about the company and share available opportunities. Kirsten Anderson, Channel Marketing Manager at Bigleaf Networks, will talk about normalizing mental health conversations in the workplace, preventing burnout, and warning signs that you could be on a slippery slope.
Agenda:
5:00 p.m. - Doors open/networking
5:45 p.m. - Introduction
6:00 p.m. - Speaking segments begin
6:30 p.m. - Networking
7:00 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: We do not have gender neutral specific restrooms, however, we have modified the restrooms in our main floor for that.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes.
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: We have ample onsite parking and it is free. If you come in off Cornelius Pass Road, upon entering the parking lot continue straight for the closest parking to our building, which is clearly marked.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: There are three entrances downstairs, however, only one will be used for entry to the site, which is our main entrance facing the parking lot directly across from the building. All guests will be required to sign a NDS and take a visitors badge while on site.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: We have some space for bikes inside the building, and racks outside, but riders will need to bring locks for those racks.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: Either works. Driving is pretty common for the office, however, the Orenco Max Station walk is about a 12 minute (leisurely) walk to our office.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. Please note there may be office pets present at this event.
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Are you interested in the best Smart Home Tech and how you can use it?
In this Meetup, I'll bring and share my favorite items in each category.
Security Cameras and Locks
1. Nest Cameras - Indoor and Outdoor 4K cameras with IQ face detection and following. Nest has built-in Google assistant with two-way audio and location detection to turn on/off while you are home or away. Free Recording (Live and past 3 hours of snapshots) vs Nest Aware ($10-30 per month for 30 days recording). I chose the Nest camera system for integration with my Google smart displays.
2. Nest Hello - Nest doorbell allows you to see who is at your door and works with the Nest ecosystem. Allows auto-replies or two audio.
https://store.google.com/us/product/nest_hello_doorbell?hl=en-US
3. August Automatic Door lock - August runs on location services that allow it to auto-lock and unlock based on your location. You can even control it with an Apple Watch.
4. myQ Garage Door - This hub will allow you to see if your garage is left open and close it from anywhere. It also sends you notifications if you’ve left it open for a custom set period of time. Voice assistant service $10 yr. Apple watch is also supported.
Smart Displays and Speakers
1. Nest Hub - The nest hub is a Google Assistant display. You can use it to control smart devices, get step by step receipt instructions, view your nest cameras, personalized routines, and display Google photos.
2. Google Home - Works similar to the Nest hub without display.
3. Chromecast - Google Assistant can play Youtube and Netflix on your TV
4. Echo Show/Dot - Alexa is the most widely used for controlling smart home devices.
Switches, Outlets, Lights
1. Switches - I prefer to use smart switches over smart bulbs unless you’re going for a custom scene. Switches only require one device rather than up to four bulbs per fixture. They don’t require a hub and do not need to be replaced. This smart switch has Alexa built-in, a smart thermostat sensor, and night light.
2. Outlets or Powerstrips - These allow you to use Voice assistant to turn on/off or set a schedule.
3. Smart Lights - You may want to consider a nice holiday ambiance or gaming/studio with the Nanoleaf panels or LifX Beams and LEDs.
Thermostat and Appliances
1. Ecobee Smart Thermostat - This thermostat comes with Alexa assistant built-in and a smart sensor to auto-adjust to cold and hot spots in your home. It will learn the occupancy based on motion and habits and adjust over time. It’s evaluated to save 23% percent on cooling and heating costs per annum. It has an Alexa speaker built-in.
2. Appliances - When it’s time to replace your home appliance you may want to consider wifi capabilities in your refrigerator, washer/dryer, etc.
Upgrade Wifi
1. Mesh Wifi or Extenders - Most homes require more than one router for coverage. Mesh Wifi force wifi clients to switch access points for better signal, cover dead spots, and offer better consistency and control.
We would love to hear how you have configured your home or plan to build the best Smart Home.

@DAMAPDX Sept. Chapter Meeting, Recent Advances in Natural Language Processing – (Some) Theory & Applications
Roll back
| description |

Presented by Joachim Rahmfeld, Ph.D
Lecturer at UC Berkeley
Today’s vast volumes of language-based, unstructured, electronic data found in various form factors such as blogs, email, social media, or web sites, promises competitive advantages for those who can extract business-relevant information most effectively and efficiently. Natural Language Processing (NLP) holds the key in leveraging this type of data in order to answer and respond to important questions such as, “What is the perception of my company in the Twittersphere?”, “Are these reviews largely positive or negative?”, “What is the translation of this in Spanish?”, “This document has the answer to my question somewhere… but where?”, “Are these products similar?”
Particularly over the last five years, revolutionary advances in NLP-related Deep Learning algorithms combined with dramatically increased compute resources have created unprecedented opportunities to not only answer natural language questions with greater accuracy and speed, but often also while requiring significantly less training data.
In this session, we will provide an overview of these advances and how you can make use of them. A particular focus will be transfer learning where large, pretrained models, such as Google’s BERT model, can be leveraged for a broad set of NLP use cases delivering excellent results, and enabling you to answer questions that were not possible to answer just a few years ago.
So this is a great time to learn about recent NLP developments and go through explicit examples.
About the Speaker
Joachim started his career in theoretical physics before leaving academia and joining the IT industry. For over a decade, he held various leadership positions in professional services, business development and sales at Sun Microsystems, VMware, and Hitachi Data Systems. In 2015, Joachim returned to his quantitative roots and obtained a Master of Information and Data Science from UC Berkeley. Most recently, Joachim managed a Data Science research team at Edison Software. He currently lectures at UC Berkeley on Natural Language Processing with Deep learning and is working on various NLP projects.

# Thanks to The Dyrt for providing the rooftop venue this month!
ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!
