Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect or how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this seminar led by an engineering leader at AWS Elemental (https://www.elemental.com/), we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
-- Morning preparation, attire, mindset
-- Preparation for the non-technical parts
-- How to study for the coding interview
-- How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 50.
Agenda:
5:00 p.m. - Doors open
5:15 p.m. - Introduction
5:30 p.m. - Session begins
6:30 p.m. - Session ends

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Online Statistical Process Control (SPC) training curriculum provides participants with the analytical tools & methods necessary to plan & conduct experiments.
The objective of the Statistical Process Control Training (SPC)/Process Capability curriculum is to provide participants with the analytical tools and methods necessary to:
Understand SPC fundamentals and the importance of reducing variation
Implement control charting in order to assess process stability
Interpret control chart signals and implement appropriate reaction plans
Determine appropriate sampling plans and sample sizes
Assess process capability training (for normal and non-normal data)
Apply charting techniques for short production runs
Apply charting methods where multiple sources of variation may exist (e.g. multiple cavities, filling heads)
Apply SPC for naturally trending data (e.g. due to tool wear)
Determine the appropriate type of chart for a given process
Avoid common misapplications of SPC in practice |

Nike Tech Talks with Fastly CTO Tyler McMullen
Roll back
| description |
Join us for the next Nike Tech Talks on February 27. Fastly CTO Tyler McMullen will give a talk titled, "Making Functions as a Service Safe for Users."
Abstract: Functions as a Service has grown dramatically in popularity over the last few years. First, in centralized cloud computing, and now as the primary model of edge computing. The industry has put a lot of work into securing these environments against intruders; however, little has been said and less done to protect users against each other and against their own errors. In this talk, Tyler will introduce a new model for functions as a service, explain how it's implemented at Fastly, and talk about how it could change the way we think about end user security.
Speaker: Tyler McMullen is CTO at Fastly, the leading edge cloud platform, where he is responsible for evolving the system architecture and the company’s technology vision. Tyler leads a team of experienced technology innovators focused on internet scale and working on future-facing, ambitious projects and standards. As part of the founding team at Fastly, Tyler built the first versions of Fastly’s Instant Purging system, API, and Real-Time Analytics. Prior to joining Fastly, Tyler worked on large-scale web applications, text analysis, and performance. He can be found debating edge computing, networking, and distributed systems all over the world.

Join us for Happy Hour at Autodesk on March 18th!
We spend quite a bit of time at work, so why not create a community and a work culture that supports meaningful relationships? This month’s theme is Work, Culture and Community. To facilitate this discussion our conversation starter will be: What is one positive way to create a positive work culture?
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
-- An employee of Autodesk will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
-- Anusha Neelam, PDXWIT Scholarship recipient will talk about developing relationships at work and in the community
-- Paris Hyun, PDXWIT Scholarship recipient, will talk about creating the work culture we deserve
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
-- An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing; if you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director
-- A PDXWIT volunteer opportunities table
-- A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected
Parents: PDXWIT has teamed up with DivCarePDX to provide caregiver services for kids ages 2-13! We have a limited number of tickets available and if you would like to register your child for childcare, please contact: [email protected] for information. You can also bring children and opt out of the childcare portion, as long as the children stick with you throughout the night.
Agenda:
4:30 p.m. - Doors open/Networking
5:30 p.m. - Introductions, Announcements + Lightning Speakers
6:30 p.m. - Event ends
Event FAQ:
Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms?
A: Anyone is free to use any restroom that they are comfortable using. We do have gender neutral restrooms located on the 5th floor that guests are welcome to use. They would need to be accompanied by an Autodesk employee as they are not located in a public space.
Q: Is the space ADA accessible?
A: Yes
Q: Will there be food and drink at this event?
A: Yes. We will provide light appetizers, beer, wine and soft drinks. We will provide
vegan and GF options.
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: We do not have onsite parking.
Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance?
A: All guests must enter and exit through our front door located between 2nd and 3rd
on Ankeny. All guests will need to sign in at the front desk and sign an NDA.
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: Yes, we can provide bike parking.
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: YES! There is a street car and bus line stop very close to our office.
Q: Can I bring my dog?
A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home.

Pitch Club PDX
Roll back
| description |

Pitch Club is a collaborative workshop for any entrepreneur with the desire to create and deliver a perfect pitch. Pitch Club will assist participants in sharpening their ability to communicate with investors including gaining insight on the types of questions potential investor will ask and the best way to answer them.
Why do we pitch?
To be successful, entrepreneurs need the ability to sell their product. Pitch Club will provide insight into perfecting how to talk about your business.
Who facilitates Pitch Club?
TiE has an extensive network of Charter Members. Many of our Charter Members have run successful businesses in the past and many are current Angel investors. We curate curriculum and leadership from the pool of talent within our network because of a shared desire to mentor entrepreneurs.
This month, Tom Kingsley, Successful Entrepreneur, TiE Charter Member, Mentor and Investor will lead the event.
Each attendee who intends to pitch should prepare a five minute pitch presentation. (This can include a power point projection that will be presented from your computer.) Directly after pitching a 10 minute Q&A will take place with questions to the imaginary investors about the product and pitch.
Those who attend pitch club will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members.

Open Hack Night!
Roll back
| description |

Every Second Friday is Open Hack Night here at ^H. Come hangout with us at the most happening (and productive) place in town! Hackerspace activities encompass Hardware, Software, Crafting/Textiles, all the Realities (Real, Virtual and Augmented), Infosec, Audio/Video, Cryptocurrencies, Gaming, you name it - if it's technology then it's in scope. Our Hackerspace is a place where people with an interest in computing or technology can gather to work on projects while sharing ideas, equipment, and knowledge. There is plenty of table space, bandwidth and 3D printers (for those looking to try that out). Bring your ideas, works in progress, or something to show off. We'll see you there! |
