Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

PDXRust Meetup: NES Emulation in Rust
Roll back
| description |

The Nintendo Entertainment System shaped an entire generation which has since spurred hundreds of emulators in the following decades. Luke Petherbridge will present a fully featured Rust implementation that will highlight many of the important strengths of Rust such as strong typing, memory safety, traits, trait objects, and generics. Web Assembly (wasm) possibilities for the future will also be covered briefly.
Luke got into Rust about a year ago, when he took a class at PSU with Bart Massey. He immediately fell in love with the language and is currently working on a lightweight 2D rendering and physics library in Rust to both supplement his NES emulator and provide future game creation/visualization possibilities. |

Venue note: We're still meeting at the food cart pod at 11th and SE Madison. We'll be in the west area of the pod with the covered picnic tables under the heaters, behind most of the food trucks. The pod has a beer cart and many food options - come enjoy dinner with us!
It may be a bit rainy, but it shouldn't be too cold plus there are covered areas to sit with heaters! See you there. |

Free Range Developers is excited to invite Valentin Lucas to talk about his experience in 2D animation!
Valentin’s career has been blossoming for 6 years and most recently he found himself working at Laika here in Hillsboro, OR. Coming from south France, He studied animation in Paris. He started improving his craft and began teaching animation and story boarding himself. He moved to Spain to work on the Netflix film “Klaus” as a 2D animator. Valentin is currently working as a 2D character artist for the aforementioned Laika.
Valentin is excited to share his 2D experience with our meetup and enlighten fellow artist on the tips and tricks he picked up on for a successful career in animation.
Valentin will walk us through his experience working on Klaus, and present us with a breakdown of the shots he worked on. Going over some of the key aspects of his work. Taking time to touch on the important principles he learned during his 1st year as an animator and showing off some exercise that kept him fresh as a 2D artist/animator. He will give us a quick overview of the 3 short films he had a hand in creating and talk about the challenges during those projects and wrapping it up with an overview of the last 6 years of his career and what got him where he is today as an artist and animator!

Managing Student Loan Debt as a Working Professional in Tech
Many of us live and/or work on the west side of the metro area but may not have a convenient professional community nearby. Thanks to PDXWIT and First Tech's support, we can get together to talk tech and other work topics.
The event will be primarily networking focused, but we will hear from Hazel Valdez and Chylon Pappas about how they have maneuvered through their student loans. First Tech industry experts who have worked with countless tech professionals at all levels will be in the room sharing their success stories and answering any of your questions about refinancing, consolidating and other student loan debt management strategies.
We will also have a job seekers section where attendees can learn about the various employment opportunities available right now.
Agenda:
5:30 pm - Doors open /networking
6:30 p.m. - PDXWIT Introductions
6:45 p.m. - Discussion Begins
7:00 p.m. - More networking
7:30 p.m. - Event Ends

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |
