Join PIE for a conversation with PIE alum Quincy Brown about how to create frameworks and strategies for equity within startups.
"As startups we have a chance to lead with equity as we develop our business plans, marketing, customer outreach, and the like," said Quincy. "From my perspective, equity includes including women, BIPOC, youth, elderly, and everyone undeserved by policies and programming."
Quincy is a young, native transportation planner from Portland. He began is transportation planning career volunteering at TriMet working directly with the HR department where he served as a volunteer translator and helped recruit Latinx employees.
Following his degree from Claremont McKenna College, Quincy engaged in post bac work at Berkeley in Sustainability and the Built Environment and City and Regional Planning. He won best research in Human Rights from the Mgrublian Center for Rights and was Claremont McKenna's first Mellon Mays undergraduate fellow, a fellowship for minority students interested in becoming PhD professors.
His research has consistently focused on creating sustainable and equitable planning and programming that support and involve people of color, people with disabilities, and low income residents. In all pursuits, Quincy is passionate about bringing equitable and sustainable practices to everyone regardless age, race, gender, sexuality, or belief.

Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition. It is hard to know what to expect or how to prepare for it. Each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this virtual seminar led by engineers at Amazon Web Services (AWS), we will cover some common interviewing practices for technical interviews and what you may be able to do to get ready. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
Morning preparation, attire, mindset
Preparation for the non-technical parts
How to study for the coding interview
How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 50.
Agenda:
11:30 a.m. - Doors open
11:35 a.m. - Introductions and announcements
11:40 a.m. - Session begins
1:00 p.m. - Session ends
Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

Join us for our next virtual lunchtime FutureTalks session!
Unconscious Bias is typically thought of like a costly weed to be eradicated. Yet, despite our best efforts, even those of us who care most about inclusivity struggle to be "unbiased." We’re so excited to be joined by Lily Zheng, where we’ll hear about the systemic and cognitive origins of bias, the ways in which unchecked bias shapes the products we make and use, and a new framework that approaches bias not from a place of fear, but understanding.

This event will be fully virtual via BlueJeans conferencing. Use the link on this page to log in at the scheduled time!

Pride is something we do daily as part of our authentic selves. To honor our LGBTQ+ history and acknowledge our current state of affairs regarding racial injustice, let’s get together and hear stories about our community! Call it a protest, call it an uprising, the history of Pride began at Stonewall with three courageous activists, Stormé DeLarverie, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera.
Join PDXWIT with our virtual host Zapproved to honor our past, acknowledge our present and discuss a better future together!
Local heroes Miki Demeter, Daelyn Moyer and Vernetta Dorsey will be sharing how they are navigating in this new normal.
Hazel Valdez and Crystal Sincoff will be your hosts for the evening, and Monica Enand, CEO from Zapproved, will share thoughts and support of the LGBTQ+ tech community in Portland.
There will also, of course, be time to catch up with old friends and network, as well as learn all about Zapproved, who is making this event possible.
This event will sell out, so RSVP soon!

Panel Discussion on Facial Recognition Use in Portland
Roll back
| description |
Facial recognition technologies are being implemented around the world. While some uses of facial recognition, like unlocking your phone, may be convenient, others allow your facial information to be collected, used, and shared, without your knowledge or consent. Both governments and companies are now using this technology, often with little to no oversight or rules in place. In addition to transparency issues, facial recognition software programs have varying degrees of accuracy and have been shown to be less reliable when analyzing people of color, women, and children.
Because of these issues, some cities, including San Francisco, Oakland, and Somerville, MA, have banned government agencies from using facial recognition. Portland city officials are also considering a facial recognition ban and are looking to go a step further and address use by private entities as well.
There are many details to consider when adopting technologies like facial recognition, which can be used for surveillance. What are the costs and benefits? Who will be the target of the surveillance? Will it make us safer? What are we giving up in exchange for that safety? And should the technology be adopted at all?
On June 15th, join us for a combined event, with local privacy group PDX Privacy, where we'll ask our knowledgeable panelists the answers to these questions. We'll explore the risks of facial recognition technology, the ways it affects various groups of people, and how we can preserve our privacy and protect our communities.
Moderator: Chris Bushick (PDX Privacy)
Panelists:
- Sarah Hamid - CAIR Oregon
- Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty - Portland City Council
- Nathan "nash" Sheard - Electronic Frontier Foundation

RSVP: https://www.meetup.com/OWASP-Portland-Chapter/events/271144214/
Abstract:
We’ll discuss a program analysis tool we’re developing called Semgrep. It's a multilingual semantic tool for writing security and correctness queries on source code (for Python, Java, Go, C, and JS) with a simple “grep-like” interface. The original author, Yoann Padioleau, worked on Semgrep’s predecessor, Coccinelle, for Linux kernel refactoring, and later developed Semgrep while at Facebook. He’s now full time with us at r2c.
Semgrep is a free open-source program analysis toolkit that finds bugs using custom analysis we’ve written and OSS code checks. Semgrep is ideal for security researchers, product security engineers, and developers who want to find complex code patterns without extensive knowledge of ASTs or advanced program analysis concepts.
Speaker bio:
Clint Gibler (@clintgibler) is the Head of Security Research for r2c, a small startup working on giving security tools directly to developers. Previously, Clint was a Research Director at NCC Group, a global security consulting firm, where he helped companies implement security automation and DevSecOps best practices as well as performed penetration tests for companies ranging from large enterprises to new startups.Clint has previously spoken at conferences including BlackHat USA, AppSec USA/EU/Cali, BSidesSF, and DevSecCon Seattle/London/Tel Aviv/Singapore. Clint holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Davis.Want to keep up with security research? Check out *tl;dr sec*, Clint’s newsletter that contains summaries of artisanally curated, top talks and useful security links and resources from around the web.
