Season 2, episode 9
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.
*NB* Season 2 is ending soon (7-12 will be the 10th episode), so we're discussing locations for Season 3. Check the website for details. |

DOs and DONTs of Mobile Strategy | Mobile Portland
Roll back
| description |
John Battelle recently wrote, "Mobile. It's on everyone's lips, but no one knows what the hell to do about it." You don't have to look very far to find examples that prove his point.
Over the last year, Jason Grigsby has been collecting examples of where companies are making mistakes when it comes to their mobile strategies and desperately seeking examples of those who get it.
In this presentation, Jason will talk about the DOs and DONTs of mobile strategy.
Learn from both the outstanding success and cringe-worthy failures of others as you begin to formulate your plans for navigating the mobile landscape.
Finally, weâll look at methods for evaluating mobile strategies based on demographics, mobile context, and the unique characteristics of mobile devices.
<b>About Jason</b>
Jason Grigsby was one of the project leads on the Obama iPhone Application and helped design the user inferface for the Wall Street Journalâs Blackberry application. He founded and organizes Mobile Portland, a local mobile group.
Jason is a co-founder of Cloud Four, a small start-up focused on mobile and web development. He blogs at http://CloudFour.com.blog and provides a frequent updates about mobile as @grigs on Twitter. |

Chris Goldfarb
Chris Goldfarb is a dev for the Intel Information Technology group, and has been writing software for 14 years. .NET has been Chris' main focus since the pre-beta bits were released, and has both developed applications and trained others on the framework. Chris has presented software engineering topics at technical conferences such as the Microsoft Professional Developer's Conference, Intel Developers Group and the Portland Area .NET User Group, which he founded.
He has held positions as board member of the Intel e-Business Group .NET Taskforce and the Technical Infrastructure committee of the International .NET Association (INETA). Chris is Microsoft Certified in .NET and has been Microsoft Most Valuable Professional (MVP) in Visual C# for 4 years.
Prior to joining Intel in January 2001, he engineered mission-critical applications for the United States Air Force, United States Strategic Command. Primarily using Java, C++, and Ada, these applications included early-warning, ballistic missile flight path, and nuclear readiness assessment systems.
TOPIC:
MEF?!? *Another* 3-char acronym out of Microsoft?
What is it and why should you care? How does it help deliver extensible applications? How is it different than traditional IoC containers, and what are some scenarios where you would use one over the other, or even both at once? How do you use MEF, and what are some potentials gotchas and considerations for implementation?
In this session learn all this and more. In fact, since nothing beats writing code to learn, bring a laptop with VS2010 RTM installed and help me build a composite application in real-time!

Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us!
title:
Towards a High-Assurance Runtime System: Certified Garbage Collection
presenter:
Andrew Tolmach
time:
10:30am, Tuesday, 29 June 2010.
location:
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR,
USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
abstract:
It seems obvious that the reliability of critical software can be improved by using high-level, memory-safe languages (Haskell, ML, Java, C#, etc.). But most existing implementations of these languages rely on large, complex run-time systems coded in C. Using such an RTS leads to a large "credibility gap" at the heart of the assurance argument for the overall system. To fill this gap, we are working to build a new high-assurance run-time system (HARTS), using an approach grounded in machine-assisted verification, with an initial focus on providing certifiably correct garbage collection. This talk will describe a machine-certified framework for correct compilation and execution of programs in garbage-collected languages. Our framework extends Leroy's Coq-certified Compcert compiler and Cminor intermediate language. We add a new intermediate language, GCminor, that supports GC'ed languages and has a proven semantics-preserving translation to assembly code. GCminor neatly encapsulates the interface between mutator and collector code, while remaining simple and flexible enough to be used with a wide variety of source languages and collector styles. Front ends targeting GCminor can be implemented using any compiler technology and any desired degree of verification, including full semantics preservation, type preservation, or informal trust. As an example application of our framework, we describe a compiler for Haskell that translates the GHC's Core intermediate language to GCminor. (This is joint work with Andrew McCreight and Tim Chevalier.)
bio:
Andrew Tolmach has been a faculty member at Portland State University since receiving his Ph.D.in Computer Science from Princeton in 1992. His current research interests, pursued under the aegis of the PSU High Assurance Systems Programming (HASP) project, focus on high-assurance systems software development, in particular using formal verification. His past publications, mostly about functional languages, include work on operating systems in Haskell, garbage collection, compilation, debugger implementation, integration with logic languages, and lazy functional algorithms. |

Hello!
The next PDX Content Strategy Meetup is next Tuesday, June 29th at 5:30 PM.
[*NOTE: Grady Britton's building doors lock at 6 PM. If you need to get access please call 503.891.7165 and we'll let you in.
TOPIC: Deliverables/Management Tools
Bring you favorite tricks of the trade for conceiving, sourcing, curating, publishing and managing content. Whether you're with an agency going this work for your client, or you're in-house taking this work on yourself, these are the tools that can make or break your online communications success (and ofline, too!).
Please RSVP on the Content Strategy Meetup site (URL below) so we know you're coming. We'll supply light refreshments. Likely, beer.
See you next week!
Hosting: Jim Woolfrey and Katherine Gray
The motivating idea behind this "Content Strategy PDX" meetup is to start a conversation (or several) around the topic of Content Strategy and the interplay, interconnectedness, and intersections of Content Strategy with marketing strategy, web development, interactive strategy, content development, SEO, social media, brand development, design, user experience, editorial planning, etc.).
Some conversations to consider:
* How to evangelize, develop and implement a Content Strategy focus/practice in your organization.
* The people, processes, technology and deliverables one might associate with "Content Strategy" within a project framework.
* Content Strategy tips, tricks, tools & deliverables.
* Content Strategy specific to web design/development
* Social Media/Marketing and the Content Strategy framework.
* Content Strategy meets Content Management -- Technologies, platforms, costs, resource requirements and other variables to consider when planning, implementing, using or otherwise considering web CMS.
* Content Strategy and Information Design
* Content Strategy as a career (or part of one)
Please join the conversation.
Thanks,
Jim |
