description nil "The White House wants you to hack for a better America. Today it announced the National Day Of Civic Hacking on June 1-2 where many government agencies will liberate data for citizens across the U.S. to use to build tech that helps their communities. Twenty-seven cities have planned events where hackers will have access to data from The Department of Labor, The Census Bureau, and even NASA’s space stats. The National Day Of Civic Hacking is a joint project from the U.S. government, Code For America, Random Hacks Of Kindness, and Eric Schmidt’s early-stage venture fund Innovation Endeavors. update Calagator::Event 1250463369 Technology Association of Oregon Legal Forum - Trademark, Copyright, and Design Patent Boot Camp Roll back

description Treating the three categories of IP (trademark, copyright, and design patent) as individual strategies is one way of protecting your IP however these same three categories can be used synergistically to create a cohesive IP policy that will provide greater protection overall. Learn from Craig Morris, Managing Attorney for Trademark Outreach United States Patent and Trademark Office as he kicks off the Trademark, Copyright, and Design Patent Boot Camp on February 14th. Craig will give a general overview identifying the differences between the three categories as well as domain names and business registrations. He will discuss the basic process and strategy for protecting each, review basic considerations for each, and discuss how they should be used collectively for maximum protection. Additional Topics: •To register or not to register •How to enforce? •Importance of selecting a strong mark, that is, both federally registrable and legally protectable •Whether an attorney should be used when doing the initial search •Potential grounds for the USPTO to refuse registration •What may happen if another trademark owner believes it has stronger rights •How to avoid scams perpetrated by companies the request fees for services not required by the USPTO Concluding Craig Morris’s overview there will be three breakout sessions which will focus on how each category applies to one product, i.e. iPod, Nike shoes, Coke bottle, etc. The outcome of the sessions is to demonstrate how a design patent can and should be linked to trademark and copyright. Small Group Breakout Sessions Design Patents Session: Leads: Katie Maksym, Nike and Brenna Leggard, Lane Powell LLP •How best to cover a product design with a design patent •What strategies can be employed to broaden and maintain coverage through small design iterations? •Strategies for extending coverage for functional features through the use of decorative features •Aspects of the design patent process that can tie in trademark or copyrights and how this can provide enhanced coverage of the product Trademark Session: Leads: Jay Rafter, Stoel Rives LLP and Nate Moceri, Stoel Rives LLP •How best to integrate trademark into the actual product design •Can the design itself be a trademark? •Explanation of product configuration trade dress •What strategies can be employed to broaden coverage and maintain coverage over time? •Aspects of trademark that can tie in design or copyrights and how this can provide enhanced coverage of the product Copyright Session: Leads: Jay Smith-Hill, Lane Powell LLP •Now that you have a design and trademark, how do you tell the world about it? •How can the use of copyrights extend the reach of a design over multiple media outlets (website, marcom, YouTube videos, etc.)? •Aspects of copyright that can tie in design or trademark and how this can provide enhanced coverage of the product Who should attend? - Engineers new to the IP System - Engineering managers - Marketing professionals - Managers having IP responsibility - Small business owners and entrepreneurs Event Details: When: Thursday, February 14, 2013 Time: 7:30 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. 7:30 a.m. - 8:00 a.m. - Networking and Breakfast 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Program, break-sessions and Q&A Where: TBD, Portland, OR Cost: $75 Members | $150 Nonmembers Supporting Sponsor: OTBC Treating the three categories of IP (trademark, copyright, and design patent) as individual strategies is one way of protecting your IP however these same three categories can be used synergistically to create a cohesive IP policy that will provide greater protection overall. description nil We decided to create our own open meetup to discuss and learn about the Internet of Things. We encourage the curious, the hackers the entrepreneurs and the executives who are engaging in this area to come join us to listen to talks, share in conversation and networking. Each session we will have talks, "show and tells "and space to hack and network with others. Modelled on two phenomenally influential and successful groups, Mobile Monday and the catalytic Silicon Valley Homebrew Computer Club, we hope that we too can enable fun and exploration with this new technology area.

description **About TechTalks:** COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team. **About this talk:** Speaker: [John Jesse](http://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=11847256&locale=en_US&trk=tyah2) As new programming languages emerge, Microsoft's flagship programming language has been evolving to keep up. See how C# and the .NET Framework have incorporated new features such as functional programming, non-blocking code, language integrated queries, and more. This talk compares C# and the .NET Framework to the languages found in the book, Seven Languages in Seven Weeks, and in particular COPIOUS' most "native" tongue, Ruby. All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover. COPIOUS is a user-centered digital experience agency. We build digital products with the user at heart and technology in our bones. update Calagator::Event 1250462918 TiE-Oregon Inspiration 3: Featuring Eric Winquist, CEO Jama Software, James Davies, COO Timbercon Roll back

description Agenda: 6.00pm to 6.50pm Reception sponsored by Stoel Rives 7.00pm to 7.20pm Presentations by Speakers 7.20pm to 8.00pm Guided Discussion by Bill Kelly 8.00pm to 8.30pm Audience Q&A Bootstrapping on Steroids: In an interview with USAToday columnist, Steve Strauss, at Pagatim.com, Eric Winquist says that what's most rewarding for him as an entrepreneur is when a customer is successful and he knows that his company has played a role in the process. As a product manager, he was frustrated with some of the enterprise solutions he saw and used his savings to build a beta version of the product. What's unique about him is he turned down outside investment. Meet Eric and find out how he has bootstrapped his way to success. Two Steps Ahead: The mantra that James Davies has for his company is "Change is Good." Finding solutions through innovative ways is what drives him. In his interview with Steve Strauss, James says that what kept them going when they started Timbercon 15 years ago was niche knowledge in the data storage game. By staying two steps ahead each time in the fiber optics world, they were able to find solutions for customers. The most gratifying aspect of being an entrepreneur for James is " the freedom to try things, to explore and learn from mistakes." Moderator: Bill Kelly Inspiration - The bedrock of innovation Successful entrepreneurship requires several elements - inspiration, innovation and if you are focused on the outcome - sound business strategy. The inspiration series focuses on the driving force behind success. How do you find that spark that drives creativity? . From idea to development, from boot-strapping to growth stage, what guides entrepreneurs as the make critical decisions? Enterpreneurs discuss lessons learned and offer tips for other entrepreneurs. Attend this event to be inspired to deal with the challenges of running your own company. Speakers: Eric Winquist, Co-Founder and CEO Jama Software James Davies, Co-Founder and COO Timbercon Eric founded Jama Software with the vision of providing customers a more collaborative way to develop new products and eliminate the common frustrations with traditional approaches to requirements management. Jama: Founded by a team of experienced software professionals frustrated with traditional enterprise tools, Jama has created a powerful Web-based application called Contour that's used by thousands every day to manage billions of dollars in research and development projects.
