create Calagator::Event 1250464190 Keep Portland Wired! A Tour of Portland’s Tech Community Roll back

description nil A tour by [Know Your City](http://knowyourcity.org) in conjunction with [The Wild](http://www.thewildevent.org/portland/) *Cost: $25 general/ $20 members* Board the bus for a ride through Portland’s technology industry, including some of the major institutions our city is known for, as well as some of our emerging start ups. Get a behind-the-scenes view of leading tech innovators, and meet some of the leaders who are shaping Portland’s tech future…you’d be crazy to miss it! We’ll start out at Portland Incubator Experiment, a start-up incubator for new, emerging tech businesses. Associated with and housed in the Widen+Kennedy building, the space canopies 8-10 start-ups at a time, helping with the early stages of creating business. We’ll hear about how they’ve created more than $1 million in venture capital and more than 400 jobs, and meet with several of the business owners. At Second Story we’ll get a look at their innovation center for new interactive experiences. Staff will share their work in pushing the boundaries of storytelling across digital channels – including web, mobile and installations. We’ll hear a bit about their history and some of the new groundbreaking projects currently in development. Nike+ Accelerator will provide us with a similar but different view into the world of emerging start-ups. Started just months ago, 10 teams are working with mentors to develop a variety of businesses, many around health, wellness and technology. The program is run by TechStars, a Colorado-based company that has generated more than $275 million in venture capital for clients over the last six years. The tour ends at Free Geek, a nonprofit whose mission is to recycle technology and provide access to computers, the Internet, education, and job skills in exchange for community service. Founded in 2000, the center refurbishes more than 44,000 computers, printers and monitors a year, while recycling 601 tons of materials. We’ll take a quick tour of their thrift store, as well as learn about their hardware grants program, classes and volunteer opportunities.

update Calagator::Event 1250464173 PSU Tech Talk: Lifecycle of the common software developer Roll back

description Lifecycle of the common software developer: a field study of the habit, environment, and community of several pacific northwest "programmers" as they progress through their professional life. Synopsis ------------- The common household developer – homo sapiens sapiens mollis – has an interesting lifecycle; tending to be only about 8-16 years long and accomplishing great tasks, then either retiring or quitting in a rage to create public art. But their formation is largely a source of confusion, and their practices during their lifetime are mysterious. We trekked into the depths of Portland to discover their habits, the environments their flourish in, and the odd communities that they create and survive within. In particular, we study one specimen who was particularly attracted to glitter (which we had in great abundance) and taught him proper english so that he could communicate with us; if we're especially lucky he will make a guest appearance to answer questions. About the speaker ------------------------- Chuck Lauer Vose is the lead instructor at the Portland Code School and a senior software developer focusing in Drupal and Ruby. His love of glitter and party hats has been well documented, but he can also be found programming professionally and helping people become better developers in his free time. He is an organizer for the pdx.rb user group (as much as it is organizable), and he likes ducks.
