description nil [Full details at http://upcoming.yahoo.com/event/7813269/ ] Abstract: In recent years, the gulf between the mass of accumulating-research data and the massive literature describing and analysing those data has widened. In the life sciences alone, two new scientific articles are published every minute. The need for intelligent tools to bridge this gap, to rescue the knowledge being systematically isolated in literature and data silos, is now widely acknowledged. This talk examines the problems faced by academics trying to access the literature, and explores recent trends in semantic publishing and visualisation aimed at bringing the literature under control. Biography Steve Pettifer is a senior lecturer in Computer Science at The University of Manchester, where he leads the Advanced Interfaces Group. His research interests centre on novel techniques for interacting with machines, and on exploring the boundaries of human/computer interaction. Recent projects include investigation of the use of 3D Virtual Environments for the treatment of Phantom Limb Pain, the use of mobile devices in the management of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and the development of semantic tools for visualising and managing the scientific literature.
