Every Little Legal Thing That App and Software Developers Need to Know

    HatchLab PDX

Every Little Legal Thing That App and Software Developers Need to Know: A Seminar for Independent Developers and Small Businesses

Presented by Joel Corcoran, Of Counsel, Rational Unicorn Legal Services LLC

Software development isn’t just a hot market for economic growth and job creation, it’s also a field of rapidly developing law -- in the U.S. and around the world. And based on his experience, Joel knows that trying to pass off legal problems as “it’s not a bug, it’s a feature” rarely works. In this seminar, we will cover all the core legal issues that can arise in any software development business: choice of business entity and product ownership; protecting your code and software products (including Open Source); borrowing code versus copyright infringement; software patents; licensing frameworks; and when to watch out for export controls (even on the Internet).

The More You Glow seminar series shines light on legal topics and other professional services. Join us for some enlightening events!

The WHAT, WHEN & HOW of starting, growing and sustaining your business

    HatchLab PDX

Starting and growing a business is not an intuitive process. But there IS a process. One of the tricks is understanding what your business needs most at a given point in time, so that you can prioritize where to spend your time and energy and maximize the results you want to achieve. One way to do that is to understand what stage of business you are in.

So, what stage of business are you in? Are your current priorities and actions in alignment with what your business really needs right now? If not, you could be spending a lot of time and energy on the wrong things. It may sound simple, but the fact is that many businesses make the mistake of investing too much in the wrong things at the wrong time, or event the right things at the wrong time. And those can be expensive mistakes.

For example, the needs of a fledgling startup are different from a business that is scaling to accommodate growth. Taking the time to understand the stages of business development is critical to making strategic decisions and avoiding costly delays that can hold your business back. When you know where you stand, you will save time, money and energy by understanding what stage of business you are in, and what to focus on to get to your next milestone.

In this hands-on workshop, we'll focus on some of the earlier stages that small businesses go through, and why some stages require more focus on marketing and sales, while others require an investment in systems, operations, or HR. Understanding the evolving needs of your business can help you anticipate (and budget for!) important investments of time and money that will help your business grow, one manageable stage at a time.

    Takeaways from this workshop include:

-Understand the stages of business development, and how this impacts your ability to succeed -Identify what stage of business you are in, and how to set realistic, achievable business goals -Learn how to anticipate your business needs over time and better plan for growth -Opportunities to get hot seach coaching on your individual business challenges

Are you a coach, consultant, freelancer or small business that wants to grow? Do you find it a challenge to prioritize where to spend your time, energy and money in your business? Do you feel a pressure to work on "everything, all the time" in your business? Would you like to be able to anticipate and plan ahead so you can pace yourself and feel more in control of your business growth? This workshop is for you!

A Digital Marketing Toolkit for Your Business

    HatchLab PDX

Find your new best customers by building a digital marketing plan that focuses on the goals, campaigns, and tactics that work best for you. From websites to social media to email marketing and advertising, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and hard to see what is really driving sales.

With 10 years experience in digital marketing strategy, in both small businesses and nonprofits, Lyndal Frazier-Cairns will teach you how to separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves, and double down on the marketing that works for you.

In addition to this intensive training, you will also take away a full, personalized marketing plan that includes best practices, your goals, and the steps you need to take to make your business plans come to fruition. Your clients are looking for what you do. Let's help them find you.

Lyndal Frazier-Cairns has been helping small businesses and nonprofits tell their stories since 2000. Among her fondest memories are: A million-strong Facebook activist movement to save the Queensland AIDS Council's ad campaign; supporting 15 indigenous young people get their start in journalism; putting an undies-clad butt on the rear of a San Francisco bus; and that time she scolded a mobster for being rude.
