WednesdayOct 2 2019Lunch & Learn: Funding for Women Entrepreneurs in Biotech
Registration link coming soon.
Funding continues to lag for women entrepreneurs in Biotechnology. As the largest women-owned intellectual property IP firm in the US, McCoy Russell LLP has been closely watching the participation of women as inventors. The ability to protect innovation through patents is a key driver to obtaining funding, and statistics show that a significant gender gap still exists in both funding and inventorship even though the biotechnology industry has increased the number of women scientists.
The average women inventorship rate in the US is approximately 13% with Oregon ranking in the bottom one-third of US states. In the last decade, only 20% of inventors on patents assigned to universities and hospitals and only 15% of inventors on patents granted to public research organizations were women. In addition, even when these applications are filed, data shows that USPTO examiners treat women inventors more harshly. A Yale study shows that women inventors had an 8.2% lower chance of obtaining a US patent where the names were clearly indicative of gender.
While funding opportunities also remain scarce (45% less funding per Boston Consulting Group), investors supporting women entrepreneurs have found a higher average ROI (10% higher).
It is in this light that McCoy Russell has developed approaches to support organizations in enhancing women participation at all levels, including in brainstorming, invention submission, etc. Because diversity leads to increased innovation, organizations can received significant valuation benefits in their portfolios.

TuesdayJul 23 2019Lunch & Learn - Escaping the Government Pricing Pinch: From Gross to Net
Organizations that thrive typically all have one thing in common: They understand what contributes, and detracts, from their bottom line. But mastering that task in a world of hidden government pricing is becoming a tightrope walk. That’s because government pricing programs can disproportionately impact sales channels—and paint a vastly different picture of a company’s financial status when comparing gross and net incomes.
Small biotech companies are frequently unaware of the impact government pricing channels will have on their developing financial models for new products. Government-regulated payers—such as Medicaid, Medicare, VA, and DOD—often leave financial ambiguity in their wake, as smart, competent, capable companies can’t keep up with the changing rules, regulations and risks inherent in government pricing. They need a guide.
Join Jason Hardaway, Managing Partner at CiiTA LLC, as he discusses government-mandated price controls, such as Medicaid, 340B, and VA—and the hidden impacts of each of these controls on your financial models. You’ll receive a roadmap on how to navigate their nuances and how to avoid their potentially devastating pitfalls. This knowledge, and an understanding of these channels pre-launch, will protect revenue and keep your investors happy.

WednesdayMay 22 2019Sales and Marketing Workshop - Sales Training for those who want to hone in their personal skills
There are many aspects to creating and developing a sales team. They range from: do you even want an in-house team? To: how will you train and monitor said team, in house or not? What characteristics will make a good salesperson? The answer to the last one might surprise you.
Once you have figured out who you want. Then you must know what you want them to say. The key to any sales process is just that, the sales process. How and who to prospect, how to qualify said prospects, the presentation, the close and of course the follow up. All are critical aspects to getting sales results.
Finally, what opportunities does your sales team present? What type of information and customer feedback can be gleaned? What benefits can be achieved by having a salesperson on board from the outset of product design?
Seating for this workshop is limited
