Developer: "Fluffy Bunny," the story of refactoring Digital Trends

Join the developers of digitaltrends.com (Richard Benjamin and Brandon Clark) as we share the trials and tribulations of refactoring one of the web's largest WordPress sites.

Back in January we started a secret internal project humorously dubbed "Fluffy Bunny". The goal was to overhaul digitaltrends.com and transform it into something modern that would free us from the chains of a legacy codebase. Six months later we unveiled the Digital Trends 2014 theme (AKA: The Unified Theme) which was a near complete end to end rewrite of not just the theme but also much of the core architecture of the site.

This will be a high level talk about our development process and thoughts on writing maintainable and modular code within the context of a major site refactor. We will touch on theme and plugin development, project organization, and a good amount of what we jokingly refer to as "code punditry". Afterwards we will be available for extended questions and answers.

Portland WordPress: Master the Rewrite API

You think you know the Rewrite API? Think again!

Rewrite rules turn request URIs (e.g. /2012/10/13/i-ate-an-apple/) into query arguments (e.g. year=2012&monthnum=10&day=13&name=i-ate-an-apple&page=) that WordPress can understand. The Rewrite API is close to, but not exactly, like turning lead into gold. And almost as powerful.

In this meetup, Daniel Bachhuber will take us through the ins and outs of the Rewrite API, as well as some common use-cases / pitfalls.

SAOpdx: Where Do You Grow From Here? Think Outside the US

Presented by the SAO’s International and Finance Forums

It’s time to start thinking about how your company is going to take advantage of the opportunities that’ll be in front of you with the upcoming economic growth predicted in the next 12-24 months. To be ready many successful software companies are looking at implementing or expanding their international strategy. Why international? One reason is that many countries are going to lead the US in coming out of the downturn. Case in point is the recent increase in interest rates in Australia - a sign that country will be an early bird in the forthcoming economic rise. Many global markets are already experiencing increases in B to B and B to C sales, job growth and other signs that we are still waiting for in the US. And with the weak dollar your solution may be a bargain in many markets around the world.

Hear from a panel of leading software executives how they are positioning their companies in markets outside the US to expand and strengthen their respective organizations. They will also highlight ‘do’s and don’ts’ from their past experiences so that you can avoid their mistakes and take advantage of their success.

Panel Bob McCarthy, Vice President/CFO, Tripwire, Inc Tom O'Keefe, Executive Vice President, EthicsPoint Jeff Gaust, President/CEO, Board of Directors, Prolifiq Software Paul Wilde, Chief Financial Officer, Webtrends

If you’re looking at how you could make international be a part of your company’s future please join us for this informative and thought provoking session.

Who should attend: CEO’s, CFO’s, Business Owners, Business Development Directors, Sales and Marketing Executives or anyone involved in strategic planning.

Continuous Integration in Your Environment: Theory and Practice

Developers SIG Cost: $10 for members $30 for non members

The Continuous Integration process is often summed up as "don't break the build," but there is a lot more to it than that. Continuous Integration done properly is all about shortening the feedback loop between developers so that any changes that affect other developers are dealt with as quickly as possible. Continuous Integration is valuable to any software organization – legacy or new product development, IT, Consulting, and R&D. This talk will cover how CI works in practice, example implementation tools for Java and .NET, as well as the theory behind reducing integration times and increasing developer productivity and code health that CI enables.

Offshoring Application Development: The Real-Life Experiences of Three Software Professionals

International SIG Cost: $10 for members $30 for non members

Although offshoring application development is commonplace now, success is not by any means guaranteed. In many cases, the gains made by lower labor costs are more than offset by the difficulties in managing such projects. Finding the best partner, implementing advantageous terms and then managing the project to success are the essential elements to ensure a solid return on investment. The International SIG of the Software Association of Oregon is pleased to offer a panel discussion that will explore best practices on the sourcing of offshore resources and the management of offshore development projects.

Moderator David Parker, Director of Product Marketing, Blazent

Speakers Will Claridge, Director of Quality Assurance, Tripwire Adam Simantel, Director of Development, Iovation John Gasper, Director of Development, Sabrix
