Introduction to Machine Learning (with Google Cloud ML APIs)

If you are planning to jump the Machine Learning bandwagon, wait no more! In this introductory ML meetup, we will explore how to use Machine Learning using Google Cloud ML APIs. Here are some fun things we will show how to do using the ML API's:

    • Understand the content of an image: Classify images into thousands of categories (e.g., "sailboat", "Eiffel Tower"), detect individual objects and faces within images, and find and read printed words contained within images.

    • Convert audio to text: Recognize over 80 languages and variants, to support your global user base. Transcribe the speech into text to enable use cases like command-and-control through voice.

    • Learn the structure and meaning of text: Extract information about people, places, events and much more, mentioned in text documents, news articles or blog posts. You can also use it to understand sentiment about your product on social media or parse intent from customer conversations happening in a call center or a messaging app.

Google Development Group (GDG) PDX Meetup - All About Kotlin

This month we're going to discuss Kotlin! If you haven't heard of Kotlin, it's a new language created by JetBrains (the people behind the people behind Android Studio). Kotlin is 100% compatible with java and android, and can be used in existing android projects mixed with java classes. There is incredible IDE support and the language itself is very modern, borrowing many concepts from functional languages such as Scala, but being much more accessible to java developers.

We will have a presentation about Kotlin basics and I encourage you to bring laptops to play with it as we will reserve some time for group work where we all play with the language together.

If you want to participate in that portion of the meetup, please have Android Studio installed along with the Kotlin plugin.

Details of Kotlin can be found at:

As always, excellent food and drink will be provided by our generous sponsor, eBay

Mara Zepeda CE0 of Switchboard on the Feminine Approach

Mara Zepeda is the co-founder and CEO of Switchboard, an online community building platform often described as a non-creepy Craigslist. She will share some insights into how the feminine approach to work is different than the masculine approach (and how that's okay).

You'll leave feeling inspired to embrace your feminine strengths!

Mara has spent her entire life working in organizations and higher education at places like Harvard University, and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia; as a reporter with National Public Radio; and as a board member of arts organizations, neighborhood associations, and her alma mater, Reed College.

Mara graduated with honors from Columbia's Graduate School of Journalism with a focus on digital media, and received her B.A. in Russian from Reed. She grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico and loves meeting new people. So get in touch.
