PDX Weekly Hackathon
Roll back
| description |

Come do strange things with computers amongst others whilst drinking fine Portland beer. Look for the row of geeks with computers in the back of the main room.
All programming languages welcome. Come work on your own projects, work on others participants' projects, get advice, have fun, etc.
You're encouraged to bring a computer, but can team up with others that brought one too.
Afterwards, the group descends on the 12th and Hawthorne foodcart pod for additional nourishment.
Also, many people meet up at the pub during the same time as the hackathon to play boardgames they bring which you're welcomed to play. |

Introducing Well-Founded Recursion
Eric Mertens
Implementing recursive functions can be tricky when you want to be certain that they eventually terminate. This talk introduces the concept of well-founded recursion as a tool for implementing recursive functions. It implements these concepts in the Agda programming language and demonstrates the technique by implementing a simple version of Quicksort. |

About McKenzie Books, Inc.
McKenzie Books is a Beaverton-based online bookstore with a selection of over 65,000 quality new and used books in their Beaverton warehouse. A locally owned business since 2001, McKenzie Books has bought and sold over a million used books online in just the past two years. Although the bookstore is internet-based and serves customers worldwide, McKenzie Books also invites local customers to order online and pick up at the business address. They also welcome visitors to use their lobby computer kiosk to search their virtual bookshelves. The lobby is open for business from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and is located on the southwest corner of 153rd and S.W. Millikan Way in Beaverton; two blocks from the Beaverton Creek MAX station.
About DonorsChoose.org
Todayâs public schools often lack resources for students to thrive. âCitizen philanthropistsâ can choose and fund specific project requests from teachers, and even receive thank you cards directly from the classrooms. Charles Best, a former Bronx public high school teacher, started DonorsChoose in 2000 so that individuals could connect directly with classrooms in need. Projects range from as little as $49 to several thousand depending on the supplies requested by the teacher. Approximately 75% of projects costing less than $400 get fully funded. 100% of the funds go towards purchasing the supplies and delivering them directly to classrooms. DonorsChoose has raised over $51 million dollars helping more than 3 million students in the process.

JETRO Clean Tech Seminar Series: Japan-U.S. Smart Grid Market Trends of the Future
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Global companies are closely eyeing the opportunity in the now-developing and popular smart grid market. Currently, the U.S. is the hot spot for smart grid development and is also attracting Asian companies from Japan, China and Korea, who are interested in deploying their smart grid technologies in the U.S. However, a majority of the U.S.-based smart grid technology companies in this market are unaware of the opportunities outside of the U.S.
This seminar will off er opportunities to learn what is happening in the smart grid market in Japan and the U.S. Furthermore, in this seminar you will learn ideas on how Japanese and U.S. smart grid companies could complement each other to grow the market together.
The general difference in the current implementation of the smart grid in Japan and the U.S. is that the U.S. seems more business-focused, aiming to reduce energy costs and develop infrastructure, while Japan seems more society-focused, seeking to reduce carbon emissions as a whole. Japan already has a reliable grid and is pushing for advanced integrated control including demand-side to be ready for intermittent renewable energy sources. In the United States, however, thereâs a need for highly reliable transmission and distribution networks.
Join us for an opportunity to advance a close working relationship between Japan and the U.S. to develop and deploy the smart grid in each nation. |

Come join us for another gathering of PDXScala, graciously hosted by Jive Software. We'll be meeting at 7PM, June 17th, and Steven Osborn will be talking about his experiences developing for Android using Scala.
----
Interested in Android Mobile OS development, but want to be able to program in Scala? Well you can have your cake and eat it too. Steven will give a high level overview of the Android development platform along with his experiences using SBT along the SBT Android plugin to rapidly develop Android applications. We'll cover everything from setting up your project, running your hello world application, and testing.
Steven is the CTO of Urban Airship, a local mobile messaging and content deliver company providing easy to use, cross-platform web services for iPhone, Blackberry and Android. With nearly a decade of experience in the industry he has participated in all stages of a software company from startup to acquisition. Steven enjoys participating in open source development and has contributed significant amounts of code to projects, including Android OpenIntents and IDiB (Identity In The Browser). Steven is also an accomplished Guitar Hero rockstar and believes strongly that ideas are worthless and execution is everything.
----
If you have other topics you'd like to discuss or just want to come hear how others are using Scala, please come join us. There is always plenty of opportunity for open discussions and mini-presentations. |

Perl 5 & 6: What you've missed in the last $n years by Eric Wilhelm and Paul Fenwick
http://www.scratchcomputing.com
http://www.perltraining.com.au
We are honored to have local Perl expert and OSCON presenter Eric Wilhelm and visiting OSCON keynote presenter Paul Fenwick talk about gems you may have been missing in Perl 5 and 6.
Eric will present an overview of the Perl 6 project, a snapshot of recent development, how to install Rakudo Perl 6, and samples of what you can do with Rakudo Perl 6 now.
Paul writes: Awesome things have been happening in Perl recently; so many that even if you've been paying close attention, you may have missed a few. In this talk we'll examine some of the coolest recent technologies for Perl programmers, including:
* Overhauling Perl's Object Oriented framework with Moose.
* Making everything a first-class object with autobox.
* Slashing your error handling code with autodie.
* Building fast, readable and reusable regular expressions with Perl 5.10.
* Bundling and building stand-alone applications using PAR, the Perl
Archiver.
* Astonishingly good profiling with Devel::NYTProf.
* Playing MineSweeper automatically with App::SweeperBot.

Drop by the OEN SwapMeet, a networking program specifically for people looking to connect with entrepreneurs, early-stage companies, and the people who help them both grow. As the Oregon economy continues to develop, there will be more and more opportunity to work with, work for, or start new companies in growing industries. SwapMeet is a great way to get connected to the people making it all happen. There's no entrance fee, and no pressure. Just networking, connecting, and a no-host happy hour!
<b>Don't miss the pre-event:</b>
Interested in learning about how to leverage your OEN membership? Arrive early at Backspace. At 4:00 pm we are hosting an OEN member orientation [link to that event] where current OEN members will share some tips about getting the most out of your OEN membership. You also will meet some OEN staff and get an overview of the organization and it programs. Please register for both events. |

Demos of Semantic Web applications. If you've got an app you'd like to talk about, contact the organizer at http://www.meetup.com/pdxsemweb/suggestion/ |

Tonight we'll have the first of our Semantic Web application demos. Three lovely volunteers will be showing actual applications that use Semantic Web technologies in various states of development.
Brian Panulla will show a system for building and interacting with rubrics - tools for educators to facilitate assessment and grading of student assignments.
Leif Warner will be demonstrating a semantic web system modeling complex and shifting state of the local Portland music scene.
Paul Daigle will be demonstrating a semantic system for identity management. The model cross-links between authenticated social objects (people, groups, time, location) and associated media (data, content) to help manage access.
So come, listen, discuss!
If you've got an app you'd like to talk about, contact the organizer at http://www.meetup.com/pdxsemweb/suggestion/ |
