ons of augmented reality in science\, medicine\, engineering\, commerce
and education can improve people’s lives in far reaching ways. Due to th
e broad impact of applications\, augmented reality is projected to eclip
se virtual reality and become a $120 billion industry over the next five
years. This talk touches on the types of applications that will drive t
he proliferation of AR. &#13\;\n&#13\;\n*Todd Revolt is the head of Str
ategic Alliances at Meta. He has more than 20 years experience in the so
ftware industry. He built global channels at Zendesk\, Atlassian\, Lithi
um\, and Zero G. At each\, he was responsible for overseeing a variety o
 f activities including marketing\, sales\, new business development\, an
d global expansion. Todd has entertained\, and educated audiences at se

and Kent Bye has conducted over 250 Voices of VR podcast interviews wit
h the leading VR developers and academics. Kent will talk about the curr
ent state of virtual reality\, some of the exciting applications in diff
erent fields\, some of the current limitations of VR\, what is on the ho
rizon\, as well as insights into the ultimate potential of virtual reali
ty. He will also have some virtual reality gear on hand that you will be
able to try.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n*Kent Bye is the host of the daily Voices o
f VR podcast and the co-founder of the Portland Virtual Reality Meetup.
The Voices of VR podcast has featured over 200 of the pioneering game de

#13\;\nReal Time Operational Analytics at the Speed of Thought with Apac

13\;\n&#13\;\nApache Spark has come a long way since it began as a faste

a player in the realm of real time analytics at scale. However\, much o
f its underpinnings remain batch oriented and unsuited for highly concur
rent OLAP workloads. In this talk\, we will describe how we are innovati

#13\;\nApply Graph Theory to Infrastructure as Code | Mitchell Hashimoto
 \, Founder\, HashiCorp&#13\;\n&#13\;\nGraphs are mathematical structures
used to model relationships between objects. Modern infrastructure is a
series of resources (objects) that have dependencies and ordering requi
rements (relationships). Thus\, modern infrastructure can be represented
as the mathematical construct of a graph. With just a few nodes\, the r
elationships between resources in an infrastructure are easy to understa
nd\, but at a certain scale\, the relationships become impractical to re
ason about.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTerraform relies on years of graph theory res
earch to model the relationships between infrastructure resources so ope
rators can safely manage and change infrastructure resources across bare
metal\, IaaS\, PasS\, and SaaS. Operators can avoid unforeseen conseque

DESCRIPTION:Join Nike Digital for the next event in our Nike Tech Talks s
eries on Thursday\, February 9th from 4:30-6:30pm!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe Sh
ape of Revolutions: How Things Change&#13\;\nEllen Friedman | MapR Consu
 ltant\, Author\, and Apache Software Foundation Committer&#13\;\n@ellen_
friedman &#13\;\n&#13\;\nThere’s a revolution underway in how people wor
k with data. For one thing\, streaming data is no longer seen as a speci
al use case – and that’s a good thing because streaming is a better fit
to the way life happens. Stream-first architectures are useful even beyo
nd real-time processing. Another big idea has to do with where data liv
es: the big data revolution showed us that data structures spanning more
than one machine are a good thing. But a new revolution involves data s
tructures that span more than one continent (geo-distribution) and that
go from on-premise to cloud.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk\, Ellen will te
ll a few stories that show how innovation with real impact can happen\,
including the shift in thinking and in engineering culture that underlie
successful change. We’ll look at emerging technologies and how best to
use them\, new designs in architecture\, and flexible practices such as
a microservices style that have huge implications in IoT and other large
 -scale analytical workflows.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRSVP: https://niketechtalksf

DESCRIPTION:Join Eric Baer\, Director of Software Development at Formidab
le\, Inc.\, at the next Nike Tech Talks on June 14! Eric will give a tal
k on The Evolution of API Design from RPC to GraphQL. Food and beverages
will be served\, and there will be time to network before and after the
talk.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout Eric:&#13\;\nEric has been developing produc
ts for over ten years in everything from embedded systems for high-end a
udio products to high-traffic APIs in Java. For the past six years\, Eri
c has developed a deep specialization in JavaScript and the associated e
cosystem. In his current role\, Eric is an O'Reilly author\, a conferenc
e speaker and Director of Software Development at both Formidable and at
Livestock Nutrition Center\, where he is driving large projects and wri
ting software around Babel\, GraphQL and i18n.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAbout the
Talk:&#13\;\nOver the last 60 years\, API designs have changed to respon
d to everything from new network topologies and new languages\, to the p
ressures of managing ever larger code bases. Today’s most popular API pa
ttern\, REST\, was developed in a time where the cost of making API requ
ests was plummeting. At the time\, bandwidth was getting cheaper\, laten
cy was dropping\, and the computing power of devices was still tracking
Moore’s Law. Mobile turned this on its head. The environments in which a
pps and APIs need to perform today have effectively regressed a decade.&
#13\;\n &#13\;\nThis talk will explore some of the new client-server int
eraction models that address today’s pressures and use history to unders
tand the tradeoffs that we made at the transition between the previous d
esigns. Eric will introduce major tools that are attempting to change th
e API landscape including GraphQL and Falcor. Since GraphQL is the domin
ant technology in this space\, he will examine some of its functionality
\, touch on some of its syntax and present a live coding demo that shows
off a GraphQL server from 0 to 1. Demonstrating a complete implementati
on in under 10 minutes will give a strong sense of what’s possible\, and
what kind of complexity burden a tool like this would impose. Spoiler:
 There is no silver bullet.\n\nTags: tech talk\, eric baer\, api\, RPC\,
