DESCRIPTION:The Portland Chapter of the DAMA Data Management User Group i
s dedicated to delivering thought provoking data-centric presentations t
hat will make you more successful in your job.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis month
\, we are bringing in Richard Sheridan\, the CEO and &quot\;Chief Storyt
eller&quot\; at Menlo Innovations from Michigan to the Propeller room at
the 200 Market Building.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nRegistration is required: http:
 //www.damapdx.org/&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOverview:&#13\;\nEvery year\, thousand
s of visitors come from around the world to visit Menlo Innovations\, a
small software company in Ann Arbor\, Michigan. They make the trek not t
o learn about technology but to witness a radically different approach t
 o company culture.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nCEO and &quot\;Chief Storyteller&quot\
; Rich Sheridan removed the fear and ambiguity that typically make a wor
kplace miserable. His own experience in the software industry taught him
that\, for many\, work was marked by long hours and mismanaged projects
with low-quality results. There has to be a better way.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
With joy as the explicit goal\, Sheridan and his team changed everything
about how the company was run. They established a shared belief system
that supports working in pairs and embraces making mistakes\, all while
fostering dignity for the team.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe results blew away all
expectations. Menlo has won numerous growth awards and was named an Inc
. magazine &quot\;audacious small company&quot\;. It has tripled its phy
sical office three times and produced products that dominate markets for
its clients.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker Bio:&#13\;\nFrom kid programmer in
1971 to Forbes cover story in 2003\, &quot\;outlier&quot\; Richard Sheri
dan(U-M grad BS Computer Science '80\, MS Computer Engineering '82) has
never shied from challenges\, opportunities nor the limelight. While hi
s focus has always been around technology\, his passion is actually pro
cess\, teamwork and organizational design\, with one inordinately popula
r goal: the business value of joy! Sheridan is an avid reader and histo
rian\, and his software design and development team at Menlo Innovations
didn't invent a new culture\, but copied an old one ... Edison's Menlo
Park New Jersey lab. Henry Ford's recreation of the Menlo Park Lab in G
reenfield Village was a childhood inspiration!&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSome call
it agile\, some call it lean ... Sheridan and his team call it joyful. A
nd it produces results ... business and otherwise. Five Inc. magazine r
evenue growth awards\, invites to the White House\, speaking engagements
around the nation\, numerous articles and culture awards and so much i
nterest they are doing a tour a day of the Menlo Software Factory™. Sher
idan was recently enlisted by Portfolio at Penguin to write a book about
all he has learned about the effect of a culture focused on Joy. Rich
is writing in his &quot\;spare time”.\n\nImported from: http://calagator

DESCRIPTION:The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought
provoking\, data-centric presentations that will make you more successfu
l in your job&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThis will be a brief introduction to some o
f the important concepts that arise in data mining in general and classi
fication analysis in particular. The focus in this presentation will be
helping attendees to develop their ability to frame business problems as
data mining problems.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThrough a demonstration driven pre
sentation format\, attendees will be exposed to a variety of data mining
topics. Throughout the demo\, attention will be paid to points of inter
section with traditional data modeler work products including the data d
ictionary and dimensional data model. I will also leave you with a varie
ty of links and references for additional study on your own.&#13\;\n&#13

DESCRIPTION:Data volume is exploding. While there may be tremendous value
to the business hidden within this information\, it also creates risk a
nd additional costs which need to be managed. Your legal department is f

on the order of terabytes or even petabytes in order to find the relevan

 r August 4th &#13\;\n&#13\;\nORIGINAL PRESENTATION: &#13\;\nThe world pr
oduces more than 2.5 exabytes of data every day. There is just too much
information out there and traditional reports using tabs\, rows and colu
mns do not paint the whole picture any longer.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nVisualizat
ion is one key approach to gaining insight from this mountain of data. A
dvanced Visualizations Platforms have enabled the use of more dynamic an
d interactive business graphics\, such as real-time dashboards and chart
s that update automatically as the data changes. It enables knowledge wo
rkers to see the trends and patterns (along with gaps and outliers) in t
he data that are not as easily identified in rows and columns of numbers
. Even Data Scientists are leveraging advanced visualizations tools to e
xplore\, understand and communicate insights\, along with the actions th
at need to be taken.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this session\, we will explore ho
w advanced visualization tools are being utilized in the era of big data
to draw valuable business insights and we will also delve into some of
the predominant data visualization tools being used by Data Scientists.&

DESCRIPTION:We will be talking about what data science is and isn’t\, wit
h particular focus on the skills that a data scientist is expected to br
ing to bear on a problem. We will discuss the educational and skill expe
ctations of a data scientist and how those relate to the skills we’ve de
veloped as ER Modelers. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nGoing by job descriptions\, data
science can easily read like “jack of all trades\, and master of them a
ll too”. How do we break that down into something more reasonably achiev
able?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhat is data science and what is a data scientist?
What do they do?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nDo ER Modelers make good Data Scientists
 ?&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAre the skill sets complementary?&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;
\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAnd then we’ll look at some of the basics of text anal
ytics\, or extracting information from unstructured text. This won’t be
nearly enough detail to make anybody a practitioner\, but we will see se
veral of the basic techniques at work and develop a functional mental mo
del of some of the techniques. By the time we’re done\, you’ll have been
exposed to concepts like:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTerm-Document Matrix (TDM)&#13
 \;\nTokenizing&#13\;\nStopword removal (Stopping)&#13\;\nStemming&#13\;\
nAnd as a bonus – we’ll see some Python code for extracting noun phrases
 &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBring your questions around thes
 e topics and let’s get into them.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nOur Speaker&#13\;\nAsok
a Diggs is a Data Scientist with Intel Corp. in Hillsboro\, OR. He has a
bout 15 years of experience in a variety of data management disciplines\
 , including database administration\, ER modeling\, ETL development\, an
d data architecture. He has recently transitioned to analysis of data by
completing the MS Predictive Analytics degree from Northwestern Univers

\, and he now spends most of his work time practicing his analytic model
