DESCRIPTION:Does everyone at your company respond to change as fast as yo
ur agile team?&#13\;\nOr do you have critical partners who simply can't
move as fast as your team? Are you required to provide detailed estima

cuts? In this presentation\, Nancy Van Schooenderwoert will explore pra

software development and applications in aerospace\, factory automation
\, medical devices\, defense systems\, as well as in financial services.
In 1998 Nancy introduced agile techniques to embedded software\, includ

in relation to specific development platforms. Her experience includes
HTML5/Javascript\, Silverlight\, and WPF in both C# and Visual Basic. Sh
e’s interested in making core .NET technologies available to all coders
to enable them to write better software faster. Her newest adventures in
clude Windows Azure and SQL Azure. Kathleen is also a long-time advocate
of generative techniques and is the author of Code Generation in Micros
oft .NET (from Apress). She has published numerous articles on a range o
f .NET technologies. Kathleen is active in the Northern Colorado .NET SI

ogs/kathleen&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTOPIC:&#13\;\nMEF offers a great tool for co
mposition and MVC offers an extensibility model designed for composition
. Combining these two demonstrates a great composition design with nearl
y unlimited flexibility conditionally exposed as you need more features
within MVC. You’ll learn how to use dependency injection (DI) to compone
ntize tasks following single responsibility principle for more robust an
d testable applications. You’ll see how MVC uses custom model binders\,
value providers\, validators\, and filters. You’ll see these techniques
used to pull almost all code out of the website project\, giving you ful
l flexibility in how you organize your website’s code. You’ll also see g
eneric base classes that allow extensive reuse of controller logic and r
euse of page elements. This challenging talk offers something for everyo
ne – deeper insight into composed systems using DI\, details about MVC i

DESCRIPTION:Nick and Chris will be providing an introduction to the new w
orld of TypeScript and will show how it applies to Windows 8. If you are
not already familiar\, you can read more at the website http://www.type
 scriptlang.org/.Some highlights:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n- TypeScript is a langua
ge for application-scale JavaScript development.&#13\;\n- TypeScript is
a typed superset of JavaScript that compiles to plain JavaScript.&#13\;\
n- Any browser. Any host. Any OS. Open Source.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTypeScript
offers classes\, modules\, and interfaces to help you build robust comp
onents.&#13\;\nThese features are available at development time for high
-confidence application development\, but are compiled into simple JavaS
cript.&#13\;\nTypeScript types let you define interfaces between softwar
e components and to gain insight into the behavior of existing JavaScrip
 t libraries.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAfterwards we will be experimenting with a n
ew gathering place\, Morgys Pub &amp\; Grill at 5245 NE Elam Young Parkw

DESCRIPTION:Scrum is Dumb\, or: How I Learned to Stop Burning Down and Lo
ve Agile (Part III of the &quot\;Agile Sucks&quot\; saga)&#13\;\n-------
 ----------------------------------------------------&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBrin
ging Agile into an organization is never a good idea. It is disruptive\,
complicated\, and very expensive. It brings organizational dysfunction
to the surface and shines a bright light on business practices that sabo
tage teams and fail to deliver value to clients. Further\, unwitting tea
ms may adopt a version of Agile that becomes dogmatic\, inflexible\, and
interested in perpetuating the &quot\;process” of Agile rather than bei
ng\, well\, agile. The only thing worse than bringing Agile in\, is tryi
ng to get Agile right.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe Agile Manifesto outlined some
very specific guidelines for understanding the values underlying Agile:&
#13\;\n&#13\;\n Individuals and interactions...&#13\;\n ...over pr
ocesses and tools&#13\;\n Working software...&#13\;\n ...over comp
 rehensive documentation&#13\;\n Customer collaboration...&#13\;\n
...over contract negotiation&#13\;\n Responding to change...&#13\;\n
...over following a plan&#13\;\n&#13\;\n That is\, while there is
value in the items on the right\, we value the items on the left more.&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nFor the most part\, the &quot\;Left Brain&quot\; of the Ag
ile Manifesto remains aspirational at best. It is interesting to note th
en that the overwhelming majority of software development projects have
chose a &quot\;Right Brain&quot\; form of Agile\, and invariably have ch
osen Scrum\, the most process-and-tool-heavy system to deliver &quot\;Ag
ility.&quot\; Further\, a reflection on the adoption of Agile leads to t
he unpalatable conclusion that Agile has been co-opted by &quot\;Scrum\,
Inc.&quot\; Instead of focusing on Individuals and Interactions\, Scrum
\, Inc. would have Agile practitioners believe that software development
efforts\, and can be reduced to users stories\, task lists\, and burn-d
 own charts packaged in SBaaS (Silver Bullet as a Service).&#13\;\n&#13\;
\nThe goal of this presentation is to untangle Agile from Scrum and to d
efine a process that will re-align software development projects back on
the &quot\;Left Side&quot\; of the Agile Manifesto and provide a framew
ork for establishing a qualitative analysis and cost savings analysis fo
 r a &quot\;Left Brain&quot\; approach to Agility.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThat sa
id\, everyone should be using Agile. This presentation will explore ways
to bring Agile into an organization\, how to choose the right &quot\;fl
avor” of Agile\, and what to do when it goes badly – because it will. Th
is presentation will also examine how to expand the Agile conversation f
rom within the software development team\, outward to internal stakehold
ers\, and eventually into client engagements. &#13\;\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWH

DESCRIPTION:Mobile first and responsive web design aren’t simply two grea
t tastes that go great together. No they represent much more than that.
Mobile first responsive web design is the responsible way to build respo
nsive designs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMobile first responsive web design is the
best way to build something that is both responsive from a layout AND a
performance perspective.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBut if mobile first is the right
way to do responsive design\, then why are so few people doing it? In t
his presentation\, we’ll dig into why mobile first responsive design mat
ters and the five techniques necessary to make it work.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nJ
ason Grigsby was one of the project leads on the Obama iPhone Applicatio
n and helped design the user interface for the Wall Street Journal’s Bla
ckberry application. He founded and organizes Mobile Portland\, a local
mobile development user group. Jason built his first web page in 1995. H

RT... no wait Windows Store Apps - argh!! to much confusion!&#13\;\n So
what does WinRT have to offer? Is it worth the effort to learn it? This
presentation is about Charles' experiences with WinRT as he dove into l
earning WinRT back in December of last year and what he has discovered a
long the way.&#13\;\n He will attempt to give you the width and breath o
f what WinRT has to offer using C# and XAML but the presentation is not
about C# and XAML. He came from a WPF/XAML background so it was natural
fit for him. In addition\, he intends to poke a lot of fun at Microsoft\

the way we will have a bit of a history lesson coupled with a group quiz

DESCRIPTION:Did you ever think you could change the world by pursuing you
r dreams? But how do you get there and reach your full potential? What d
oes education has to do with all of this? Women can transform their live
s by jumping in and getting involved in their dreams. At this event\, yo
u’ll see an inspiring movie called Girl Rising. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nWant to
understand the basics behind all the cool gadgets we use every day? It a
ll starts with circuits! And we’ll have a fun activity for beginners. &#
13\;\n&#13\;\nWhat is this event? &#13\;\nIt’s a combination movie showi
ng and hands-on activity. It’s a chance for high school girls to meet wo
men in technology and a chance for women in technology to be inspired by
high school girls! &#13\;\n&#13\;\nWho's invited?&#13\;\nWe’re excited
to have an Intel WIN and ChickTech event! If you identify with any of th
e following\, we’d love to have you: &#13\;\n&#13\;\nCurrent and past Ch
ickTech: High School participants&#13\;\nCurrent and past ChickTech volu
 nteers&#13\;\nChickTech supporters&#13\;\nIntel WIN members&#13\;\nFutur
e ChickTech volunteers and supporters&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWhy should you come
 ?&#13\;\nIt’s free! There will be snacks.&#13\;\n &#13\;\nBut seriously\
, this is an event to watch and reflect on women’s empowerment in tech b
y watching Girl Rising. We’ll also have an educational (and fun\, we pro
mise!) hands-on activity and create your very own circuit. &#13\;\n&#13\
 ;\nIf you’re a ChickTech: High School participant\, we’ll do our best to
provide transportation to the event\, free of charge. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nW
ho’s hosting?&#13\;\nIntel WIN (Women in Intel Network) Oregon will be c
o-hosting this event with ChickTech. Intel is graciously hosting the eve
nt\, and ChickTech is working hard to plan and run the event. &#13\;\n&#
13\;\nPublic Transportation&#13\;\nHF3 is a 7 minute walk from the Hawth

DESCRIPTION:The Northwest Regional Women in Computing (NWrWIC) Celebratio
n focuses on empowering and encouraging women to enter the Science\, Tec
 hnology\, Engineering\, and Math (STEM) fields\, particularly computer s
cience. The conference brings together students from universities and hi
gh schools\, with industry leaders from the private and public sectors t
o engage and inspire the next generation of leaders to play an active ro
le in shaping the future of computing and technology.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe
2015 conference is the fourth annual event. Our mission is to encourage
women to pursue and build successful careers in computing and technolog
y by improving their educational experience and engagement with industry
leaders. With less than 30% of STEM jobs filled by women\, the industry
is lacking full representation of the world’s views. This lack of diver
sity inhibits industry’s innovation potential. Our effort recognizes and
empowers women who are part of the computing industry and celebrates al
l who are supporters of them.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf you are the following\,
then you would want to come:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n College professionals&#1
 3\;\n industry leaders&#13\;\n Job seekers&#13\;\n STEM/Technol

DESCRIPTION:The talk is about F#\, MBrace and Azure as uber-innovative op
en source tools for distributed programming\, cloud computing and big da
ta inspired by functional paradigm and wonders of monads. I will describ
e computation expressions or monadic computations\, which is the unique
F# feature that makes it possible to introduce language integrated domai
n specific language to control the custom flow\, side effects\, ambiguou
s unpredictable behavior and shows absolutely innovative usage of F# lan
guage. You'll see the open-source MBrace framework built on the base of
F# computation expressions as a distributed computational framework engi
ne for cloud computing and performing highly loaded jobs on big data\, e
xecuting in non-blocking way\, managing the state across the cluster of
same-network nodes and making all that stuff easy for the software engin
eer. I will give you a tour through MBrace framework constructions\, its
architectural design and practical implementation model and demonstrate
the full solution potential with Azure infrastructural services and ope
n source Brisk Engine. As a result\, you'll see the undeniable advantage
s of both individual technologies: F#\, MBrace\, Azure and their combina
tion in solving complex and frequently used tasks\, like highly scalable
data-intensive computations\, processing of huge amounts of distributed
data in cloud environment.Architecture construction examples\, code fra
gments\, demo of parallel computation tasks execution and the result wil
l be presented\, clearly showing that .NET Open Source stack is finally
 shooting ahead.\n\nTags: meetup:event=224880418\, meetup:group=PADNUG\n\

DESCRIPTION:Agile has been an astounding success in the development commu
nity\, but DevOps – which closes the gap between devs and infrastructure
  – seems to be lagging behind. Companies are experiencing some serious g
rowing pains in trying to adopt a change-management friendly culture on
their road to DevOps maturity. Let’s push beyond book knowledge and buzz
words and talk frankly about what is really going on in Portland today
on the DevOps scene. One local company\, SureID\, has experienced some g
reat successes and some hard-won lessons in adopting DevOps over a perio
d of several years. Come hear what they’ve learned and leave with a prac
tical roadmap and metrics-based goals that you can take back to your com
pany in your own journey! We’ll cover the following areas: • Why culture
comes first – using the lessons of General Motors • Where the books go
wrong – what happens in the real world with DevOps – and how to overcome
them grass-roots • Tools that sparkle – using Octopus to handle release
management\, and TeamCity for monitoring and op insights\, Chef and Pup
pet for configuration management and deployment. • Cool dashboards you c

DESCRIPTION:Bruce writes C# programs that control industrial machines. Hi
s software controlled the creation of the Strati (the world’s first 3D p
rinted car) and is shaping turbine blades at GE Aviation. He's currently
working on systems that will turn precision watch parts in France\, cut
battery components in China\, mill bearing races in Ohio\, and cut boat
parts in South Carolina. He is one of the best software engineers in th
e world in this particular specialty – and will be sharing many of his m
ost effective techniques with you! Topics include: • An efficient applic
ation architecture for machine control. • Robust communication with moti
on controllers and other devices. • WPF techniques for screens that oper
ators (and clients) will love. • Diagnostic tools and techniques.  (The
machine will not have an internet connection.) • Protecting your data fr
om operators who will cut power to the machine. • Simple and effective i
nternationalization using Microsoft Translation Services. There is a ser

in a short time frame will have a very successful career. Furthermore\,
even if you are currently working in a different field - if you are work

DESCRIPTION:A serverless approach to computing is one where services requ
ired to run a system are managed and automated. Developers don’t need to
worry about running server instances and you pay only for the time code
is actually executing\, instead of servers hosted by the hour. Learn ho
w to build .NET based serverless applications with Amazon Web Services (
AWS). We’ll build an ASP.NET Core API and deploy it to AWS’s function as
a service\, Lambda and API Gateway. Then we'll deploy a single page app
lication (SPA) with AngularJS using AWS’s storage service\, S3 and conte
nt delivery network\, CloudFront. This entire serverless application wil
l be built\, deployed and ready to serve at scale during the demo.\n\nTa

DESCRIPTION:For the second time in Cloud Native PDX history\, we will be
having a joint meetup with OpenStack (now the Open Infrastructure Meetup
). This is also our first-ever Southwest Portland meetup.&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nTwo speakers will share their experiences in Kubernetes and OpenStack.
 Pizza\, beverages\, and raffle will round out the evening.&#13\;\n&#13\;
 \nAGENDA&#13\;\n5:30 – 6:00 p.m. Check-in\, Pizza\, &amp\; Networking&#1
3\;\n&#13\;\n6:00 – 6:30 p.m. Accelerating the Adoption of Hardware Acce
lerators in Kubernetes – Swati Sehgal of Intel&#13\;\n&#13\;\nWith conta
iners becoming the desired deployment model for a wide range of workload
 s such as Big Data\, IoT\, storage\, AI\, ML\, SDN and NFV solutions\, c
ontainer orchestration tools like Kubernetes\, need to evolve to meet st
ringent networking and resource management requirements for optimum util
ization of compute\, network and storage. Such application generate larg
e volume of data that needs to be securely transferred in and out of sto
rage and over the network and inherently require compression and encrypt
ion which makes them computationally expensive. Offloading such operatio
ns to the hardware accelerators results in better CPU utilization and im
 proved application performance.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n6:30 – 7:00 p.m. Containe
r Compliance Tooling -- Nisha Kumar of VMWare&#13\;\n&#13\;\nNisha intro
duces Tern\, a utility for software package introspection in containers.
This tool allows administrators to have the same level of confidence on
what's in their containers as they currently do with VM inages\, includ
ing compliance audits\, bill of materials\, and exploit detection. Nisha
is the primary author of Tern. https://github.com/vmware/tern&#13\;\n&#
