file system architecture and discuss tools for imaging file&#13\;\n sys
tems\, suggest a few useful tools and idioms for finding clues in&#13\;\

DESCRIPTION:  &#13\;\n                                 PRESENTATION&#13\;
 \n &#13\;\n Crash Reporting: Mozilla's Open Source Solution&#13\
 ;\n&#13\;\n by&#13\;\n&#13\;\n K Lars Lohn&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Nothing exercises the limits of software like turning it &#13\;\n
over to the end users. While in-house testing is invaluable\, &#13\;\n
the end users can often find the neglected edge cases or subtle &#1
3\;\n race conditions in a more reliable manner. However\, once the
&#13\;\n software is in the end user’s hands\, postmortem crash info
rmation &#13\;\n is usually lost.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n By taking the
Google Breakpad project and enhancing it with &#13\;\n Mozilla’s own
Socorro project\, Mozilla has a solution to this problem. &#13\;\n
When Firefox goes down\, in a last ditch effort\, it lobs a &#13\;\n
packet of crash information over the wall to Mozilla's Socorro &#13\;\
n servers. Socorro Servers\, written in Python\, can handle million
s &#13\;\n of these crashes per day. Using Google Breakpad libraries
to &#13\;\n reconstitute useful stack traces\, Socorro Server saves
its &#13\;\n work in a PostgreSQL database. There statistics are g
athered &#13\;\n and displayed under the Socorro UI\, a PHP web appl
ication. &#13\;\n With this suite of tools\, the Mozilla developers
can track &#13\;\n trends and even drill down to look at specific i
nstances of&#13\;\n Firefox crashes.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n WARNING: du
ring this talk\, Firefox will be intentionally &#13\;\n crashed live
on stage. Those of delicate constitution may wish &#13\;\n to reti
re to the lobby prior to the spectacle.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n about Lars&#
13\;\n&#13\;\n Trapped at the triple point between a geek\, a hippie
and &#13\;\n a biker\, Lars is a self proclaimed Cowboy Programmer
at the &#13\;\n Mozilla Corporation. Unintentionally specializing i
n programming &#13\;\n as performance art\, Lars frequently jumps in

nAbstract:&#13\;\nEstimates are required multiple times in a project. Pr

clude: &#13\;\n• The amount of time for a task\;&#13\;\n• The cost f
or resources\;&#13\;\n• The cost of software\, hardware and other mate
rials\;&#13\;\n• The time required to finish a task.&#13\;\nHowever\,
there are many problems with estimates. This presentation focuses on th
e sociological and psychological aspects of doing estimates. &#13\;\nIt
teaches attendees the environmental issues that affect estimates and how
to deal with their impact. Through class interaction\, it shows both th
e psychological and sociological factors that affect how estimates are g
iven and provides leaders with tools to help avoid the common pitfalls.
By avoiding these situations\, estimates become more representative of t
he project and more variation more predictable. Controlling both of thes
e\, help the Project Manager avert trouble. &#13\;\nThis a very interact
ive and fun presentation. It has a short exercise and throughout the pre
sentation\, attendees are asked to make estimates on doing the exercise
again under a number of situations to help better learn from their own b
ehavior.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker Bio:&#13\;\nTodd Williams has thirty yea
rs experience as a Project Manager\, Architect\, entrepreneur and busine
ssperson. He has spent twenty of those years recovering red projects. Fr
om this experience\, he has developed a process to make the recoveries m
ore efficient. His experience also provides a plethora of invaluable kno
wledge on avoiding project failure.&#13\;\nHe has worked in manufacturin
g and service industries for products used internally and externally to
the companies developing them. The projects include large-scale system i
 ntegration of manufacturing systems\, equipment integration\, web-based
collaboration tools\, thick clients with automated update via the intern
et and large-scale business systems integration. The projects have been
in Taiwan\, Singapore\, Canada\, the United States and Israel. The team
s have been dispersed in as many as five countries\, three continents an
d countless time zones. Some of these projects were captive in-house tim
e and materials projects while others were outsourced fixed-priced proje
 cts.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMr. Williams is the President of eCameron\, Inc.\, l

 \n &#13\;\n Drupal&#13\;\n
                    What is it Good For?&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
                      by&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
Lev Tsypin&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Drupal is growing leaps and bounds these
days\, powering everything &#13\;\n from ma and pa brochure sites t
 o Obama’s recovery.gov. Does this &#13\;\n mean it’s a great fit for
any website? Not exactly.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Drupal has been defined a
 s many things\, including a content &#13\;\n management system\, a w
eb application framework\, and community &#13\;\n plumbing. In some
 ways\, this is both a blessing and a curse\; &#13\;\n there’s so muc
h you can do\, in so many different ways\, that new &#13\;\n users a
re crushed under the weight of the options and lack of &#13\;\n clar
ity. In addition\, all of that flexibility does come with a cost\, &#13\
;\n in terms of performance and conciseness.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Thi
s presentation will cover some Drupal basics including history\, &#13\;\
n core concepts\, and system structure. From there\, we will dig int
o &#13\;\n Drupal’s strengths and weaknesses\, finishing off by disc
ussing the &#13\;\n types of projects Drupal is best suited for\, in
cluding specific &#13\;\n examples for each case.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n
My hope is that developers new to the platform will gain a better &#13
\;\n understanding of when to approach a new project with Drupal\, m
ore &#13\;\n experienced developers will gain a bit of insight on wh
en not to &#13\;\n use it\, and non-techies will have some help in c
hoosing a platform &#13\;\n for their projects along with an underst
anding why developers they &#13\;\n work with select a given platfor
 m. Please note that this talk will &#13\;\n not delve deeply into th

DESCRIPTION:Jon Bach is coming to our local agile users group to tell us
about his specialty\, exploratory testing. Pizza at 6:30\, meeting at 7
 .&#13\;\n&#13\;\nTalk: &quot\;Exploratory Testing: Now In Session&quot\;
&#13\;\n &#13\;\nThe agile nature of exploration and the ability of test
ers to rapidly apply their skills and experience make exploratory testin
g a widely used test approach—especially when time is short. But explora
tory testing is often dismissed by project managers who assume that it i
s not reproducible\, measurable\, or accountable. If you share these con
cerns\, a solution may lie in a technique called Session-Based Test Mana
gement (SBTM)\, developed by Jon and his brother James specifically to a
ddress these problems. In SBTM\, testers are assigned areas of a product
to explore\, and testing is time boxed in &quot\;sessions&quot\; which
have mission statements called “charters” to create a meaningful and cou
ntable unit of work. Jon discusses—and you can practice—the skills of ex
ploration and demonstrates a freely available\, open source tool to help
manage your exploratoration.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSpeaker Bio: Jon Bach has b
een in testing for 14 years\, 12 of which has been as a manager. His ex
perience includes managing teams at Microsoft\, HP and LexisNexis\, and
is currently a managing consultant for Quardev\, Inc. -- a Seattle test
lab. He speaks frequently about test management and exploratory testing
\, and is the co-inventor (with his brother James) of Session-Based Test
Management. He’s also written a few articles for testing magazines as
well as a listed co-author of a Microsoft Patterns and Practices book on
acceptance testing (available for free online). Find him on Facebook\,

DESCRIPTION:PRESENTATION&#13\;\n&#13\;\nServer Sky - Data Centers in Orbi
 t&#13\;\n Power for computation on a Moore's Law schedule&
 #13\;\n&#13\;\n Keith Lofstrom\, http://server-sky.co
m&#13\;\n&#13\;\n The EPA estimates US data centers (not including d
esktops)&#13\;\n consumed 1.5% of total US electrical consumption in
2006.&#13\;\n They predict a doubling to 3% of base load by 2011.
Our&#13\;\n work as programmers and technologists continues this&#13
\;\n runaway exponential growth\, and we will be stopped by&#13\;\n
environmental and resource limits soon.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Server s
ky is a proposal to use newly emerging solid state&#13\;\n technolog
ies to build large arrays of 3 gram paper-thin&#13\;\n solar-powered
computation satellites in 6400km Earth orbits.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n A si
ngle server-sat replaces 15 watts of ground-based&#13\;\n electrical
  generation\, cooling\, and power conversion\, as&#13\;\n well as th
e computation and communication hardware itself.&#13\;\n Orbital ser
ver farms may start out as expensive as current&#13\;\n approaches\,
but design improvement and cheaper launch will&#13\;\n decrease cos
ts exponentially over time\, much as transistor&#13\;\n cost has plu
mmeted over the last four decades.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n This is open tech
nology\, responsive to public input\, and&#13\;\n the project needs
volunteer software and engineering help&#13\;\n to stay that way. E
ventually\, Server Sky will create&#13\;\n thousands of open technol
ogy jobs in the Portland area\,&#13\;\n and permit unbounded computa
tion growth in space\, while&#13\;\n reducing energy demand and envi
ronmental damage on Earth.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Earth can return to what
it is good at green and growing&#13\;\n things while we fill space w
 ith gray and computing things.&#13\;\n\n\nTags: linux\, plug\n\nImported

1986 to 1994) from 4.3BSD &#13\;\n to 4.4BSD and of the effort to re
move AT&amp\;T-encumbered code.&#13\;\n It has evolved a great deal

Berkeley DB (BDB) is a computer software library that provides &#13

 \, &#13\;\n PHP\, Java\, Perl\, Python\, Ruby\, Tcl\, Smalltalk\, an

 n John Jason Jordan&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Scr
ibus is just a few years old\, but has already achieved &#13\;\n mos

TeX\, and advantages &#13\;\n and disadvantages. This will include
the basic features of &#13\;\n Scribus\, including typographical con

rt options\, scripting\, collect for &#13\;\n output\, and lots more
. It will also cover how Scribus is the &#13\;\n end tool in a proce
ss that starts with other programs.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n Finally we will
reproduce the PLUG flier that was created &#13\;\n in Scribus. This
will be presented on the screen showing &#13\;\n the steps and feat

            by&#13\;\n                                 David Mandel&#13\;
\n&#13\;\n&#13\;\n David Mandel is interested in distilling the core
ideas &#13\;\n from the philosophy of Open Source Software and exte
nding&#13\;\n these into other areas like music\, publishing\, farmi
ng\, &#13\;\n and education. In the past he has given presentations
&#13\;\n on Open Source Agriculture.&#13\;\n&#13\;\n In this pre
sentation\, David wants to discuss Open Source&#13\;\n in education.
This is not a presentation about using &#13\;\n Open Source Softwa
re in traditional classrooms as much&#13\;\n as it is a discussion a
bout using Open Source Philosophy&#13\;\n to change traditional clas
srooms. We will discuss the &#13\;\n work of John Gatto author of &
quot\;Dumbing Us Down&quot\;\, the Moore &#13\;\n Method of teaching
mathematics\, and David Mandel's personal &#13\;\n experience teach
ing mathematics and computer classes in &#13\;\n community colleges.

DESCRIPTION:Scrap Your Zippers: A Generic Zipper&#13\;\nfor Heterogeneous
  Types&#13\;\n &#13\;\nMichael Adams\, Indiana University&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nAbstract&#13\;\nThe zipper type provides the ability to efficiently edi
t tree-shaped data in a purely functional setting by providing constant
time edits at a focal point in an immutable structure. It is used in a n
umber of applications and is widely applicable for manipulating tree-sha
ped data structures.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe traditional zipper suffers from
two major limitations\, however. First\, it operates only on homogeneou
s types. That is to say\, every node the zipper visits must have the sam
e type. In practice\, many tree-shaped types do not satisfy this conditi
on\, and thus cannot be handled by the traditional zipper. Second\, the
traditional zipper involves a significant amount of boilerplate code. A
custom implementation must be written for each type the zipper traverses
. This is error prone and must be updated whenever the type being traver
sed changes.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe generic zipper presented in this talk ov
ercomes these limitations. It operates over any type and requires no bo
ilerplate code to be written by the user. The only restriction is that t
he types traversed must be instances of the Data class from the Scrap yo
 ur Boilerplate framework.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nBiography&#13\;\nMichael D. Ada
ms will be completing his Ph.D. in Computer Science at Indiana Universit
y this summer. He has a B.S. in Computer Science\, a B.S in Computer En
gineering and a Minor in Mathematics from the University of Kansas. &#13
\;\n&#13\;\nHis research interests are the implementation and constructi
on of programming languages\, compilers and software analysis tools that
help programmers more easily implement\, reason about\, prove correct a
nd improve the performance of their programs. This includes areas such
 as type systems\, static analysis\, control-flow analysis\, compilers an
d optimization.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn spring 2007\, he worked on the X10 lan
guage for an internship at IBM Research. In summer 2007\, he worked on t
he Glasgow Haskell Compiler at Microsoft Research. In 2008-2010 he worke
d for Cadence Research on the Chez Scheme compiler.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nHe is

&#13\;\n &#13\;\nThe agile nature of exploration and the ability of test

g a widely used test approach—especially when time is short. But explora
tory testing is often dismissed by project managers who assume that it i

ddress these problems.

DESCRIPTION:GPU architectures are often described in confusing and overly
optimistic terms. The AMD Fusion APU architecture provides improvements
in communication latency and bandwidth between devices\, so the problem
of choosing the right core on which to execute code becomes both more a
cute and more flexible as communication between tasks becomes easier. Bu
t as the CPU and GPU become ever closer\, how does one program these mac
hines? This talk takes a look at these emerging architectures\; touches
on the current parallel programming models for CPUs and GPGPUs\; and fo
llows this with a perspective on what future programming models for hete
rogeneous architectures will look like.\n\nImported from: http://calagat

DESCRIPTION:In the 1970’s\, researchers at Xerox PARC gave themselves a g
limpse of the future by building computers that\, although wildly imprac
tical at the time\, let them experience plentiful fast cycles and big me
mories. PARC researchers invented Smalltalk\, and the freedom afforded b
 y such a dynamic\, yet safe\, language\, led them to create a new experi
ence of computing\, which has become quite mainstream today.&#13\;\n&#13
\;\nIn the end of the first decade of the new century\, chips such as&#1
3\;\nTilera’s can give us a glimpse of a future in which manycore&#13\;\
nmicroprocessors will become commonplace: every (non-hand-held) computer
’s CPU chip will contain 1\,000 fairly homogeneous cores. Such a system
will not be programmed like the cloud\, or even a cluster because commun
ication will be much faster relative to computation. Nor will it be prog
rammed like today’s multicore processors because the illusion of instant
memory coherency will have been dispelled by both the physical limitati
ons imposed by the 1\,000-way fan-in to the memory system\, and the comp
aratively long physical lengths of the inter- vs. intra-core connections
. In the 1980’s we changed our model of computation from static to dynam
ic\, and when this future arrives we will have to change our model of co
mputation yet again.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIf we cannot skirt Amdahl’s Law\, th
e last 900 cores will do us no&#13\;\ngood whatsoever. What does this me
an? We cannot afford even tiny amounts of serialization. Locks?! Even lo
ck-free algorithms will not be parallel enough. They rely on instruction
s that require communication and synchronization between cores’ caches.
Just as we learned to embrace languages without static type checking\, a
nd with the ability to shoot ourselves in the foot\, we will need to emb
race a style of programming without any synchronization whatsoever.&#13\
;\n&#13\;\nIn our Renaissance project at IBM\, Vrije\, and Portland Stat
 e&#13\;\n(http://soft.vub.ac.be/~smarr/renaissance/)\, we are investigat
 ing&#13\;\nwhat we call “anti-lock\,” “race-and-repair\,” or “end-to-end
&#13\;\nnondeterministic” computing. As part of this effort\, we have bu
ild a Smalltalk system that runs on the 64-core Tilera chip\, and have e
xperimented with dynamic languages atop this system. When we give up syn
chronization\, we of necessity give up determinism. There seems to be a
fundamental tradeoff between determinism and performance\, just as there
once seemed to be a tradeoff between static checking and performance.&#
13\;\n&#13\;\nThe obstacle we shall have to overcome\, if we are to succ
essfully program manycore systems\, is our cherished assumption that we
write programs that always get the exactly right answers. This assumptio
n is deeply embedded in how we think about programming. The folks who bu
ild web search engines already understand\, but for the rest of us\, to

DESCRIPTION:Open Data and Interoperability by Arlo Belshee&#13\;\n&#13\;\
nLots of us want to expose our data via RESTful web APIs. We also want t
o consume data exposed via such APIs. REST + Json works well for this. H
owever\, we'd also like to mash up multiple data sources and build highe
r level tools. For example\, it would be nice to create Business Intelli
gence (BI) tools that can point to any API and start charting the data\,
or create JavaScript control libraries that can be bound directly to da
ta sources.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nUnfortunately\, that isn't possible with just
REST + Json.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe problem is that each service is custom.
No two services follow exactly the same rules. Sure\, everything expose
s sets of resources. But how do you get from a resource to its related r
esources? How do you ask the server to tell you about related resources?
What\, exactly should the server do when it gets a PATCH verb? Each ser
ver interprets these differently\, which prevents making general tools.&
#13\;\n&#13\;\nI'm going to talk about the OData protocol. This is an op
en standard that defines uniform semantics and modeling for RESTful web
services. I'll show how this allows general tools to be built\, and data
from multiple sources to be combined together in interesting ways - wit
hout requiring custom code for each server. I'll also show how this enab
les people working in different languages. A single library can be writt
en for each language which can then support all OData-compliant RESTful
web services.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nMost of the examples will be with open sour
ce frameworks and tools\, but I'll also show ways that you can use OData
to break out data that is trapped in closed-source systems and expose i
t to the open source ecosystem.&#13\;\n&#13\;\nAgenda:&#13\;\n&#13\;\n7:

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe stereotypical view of computing\
, and hence computer security\, is a landscape filled with laptops\, des
ktops\, smartphones and servers\; general purpose computers in the prope
r sense. However\, this is but the visible tip of the iceberg. In fact\,
most computing today is invisibly embedded into systems and environment
s that few of us would ever think of as computers. Indeed\, applications
in virtually all walks of modern life\, from automobiles to medical dev
ices\, power grids to voting machines\, have evolved to rely on the same
substrate of general purpose microprocessors and (frequently) network c
onnectivity that underlie our personal computers. Yet along with the pow
er of these capabilities come the same potential risks as well. My resea
rch has focused on understanding the scope of such problems by exploring
vulnerabilities in the embedded environment\, how they arise\, and the
shape of the attack surfaces they expose. &#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk\,
I will particularly discuss recent work on two large-scale platforms: m
odern automobiles and electronic voting machines. In each case\, I will
explain how implicit or explicit assumptions in the design of the system
s have opened them to attack. I will demonstrate these problems\, concre
tely and completely\, including arbitrary control over election results
and remote tracking and control of an unmodified automobile. I will expl
ain the nature of these problems\, how they have come to arise\, and the
challenges in hardening such systems going forward.\n\nTags: psu\, comp

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nIn this talk\, I describe two side-c
hannel traffic analysis attacks on encrypted voice-over-IP calls and a n
ovel technique for efficiently defending against such attacks. We begin
with a review of the basics of speech coding to understand how and why i
nformation can leak out of an encrypted VoIP call. We then discuss the t
echniques for recovering hidden information: first\, how to identify the
language spoken in the call\, and then how to spot particular phrases.
Our techniques are completely speaker-independent\, and require no recor
ded examples of the target phrase. Nevertheless\, we show that they achi
eve surprising accuracy on widely-used speech corpora. Finally\, we cons
ider methods for limiting this information leakage. Experimental results
show that an intelligent\, adaptive adversary can convincingly deceive
such traffic analyses while incurring much lower overhead than previousl
 y expected.\n\nTags: psu\, computer science\, colloquium\, voip\, encryp

DESCRIPTION:Abstract:&#13\;\n&#13\;\nSatisfiability (SAT) and satisfiabil
ity module theories (SMT) solvers are efficient automated theorem prover
s widely used in several fields such as formal verification and artifici
al intelligence. Although SAT/SMT are traditional propositional and pred
icate logics and well understood\, SAT/SMT solvers are complex software
highly optimized for performance. Because SAT/SMT solvers are commonly u
sed as the final verdict for formal verification problems\, their correc
tness is an important issue. This talk discusses two methods to formally
certify SAT/SMT solvers. First method is generating proofs from solvers
and certifying those proofs. One of the issues for proof checking is th
at SMT logics are constantly growing and a flexible framework to express
proof rules is needed. The proposal is to use a meta-language called LF
SC\, which is based on Edinburgh Logical Frame with an extension for exp
ressing computational side conditions. SAT and SMT logics can be encoded
in LFSC\, and the encoding can be easily and safely extended for new lo
gics. And it has been shown that an optimized LFSC checker can certify S
MT proofs very efficiently. Second method is using a verified programmin
g language to implement a SAT solver and verify the code statically. Gur
u is a pure functional programming language with support for dependent t
ypes and theorem proving. A modern SAT solver has been implemented and v
erified to be correct in Guru. Also\, Guru allows very efficient code ge
neration through resource types\, so the performance of versat is compar
able with that of the current proof checking technology with a state-of-
 the-art solver.\n\nTags: psu\, computer science\, colloquium\, satisfyia

DESCRIPTION:Abstract: &#13\;\n&#13\;\nThe focus of my research is on enab
ling novel kinds of interaction between the user and the information in
a variety of digital environments\, ranging from social content sites\,
to digital libraries\, to the Web. In the first part of this talk\, I w
ill present an approach for tracking and querying fine-grained provenanc
e in data-intensive workflows. A workflow is an encoding of a sequence o
f steps that progressively transform data products. Workflows help make
experiments reproducible\, and may be used to answer questions about dat
a provenance – the dependencies between input\, intermediate\, and outpu
t data. I will describe a declarative framework that captures fine-grain
ed dependencies\, enabling novel kinds of analytic queries\, and will de
monstrate that careful design and leveraging distributed processing make
tracking and querying fine-grained provenance feasible. In the second
part of this talk\, I will discuss information discovery on the Social W
eb\, where users provide information about themselves in stored profiles
\, register their relationships with other users\, and express their pre
ferences with respect to information and products. I will argue that in
formation discovery should account for a user's social context\, and wil
l present network-aware search – a novel search paradigm in which result
relevance is computed with respect to a user's social network. I will d
escribe efficient algorithms appropriate for this setting\, and will sho
w how social similarities between users may be leveraged to make process

DESCRIPTION:&#13\;\nBack in 2001\, researchers decided to try to use &quo
t\;the other&quot\; processor in their PC (the graphics card) for comput
ation. These early\, tedious efforts were promising and lead to a new
type of computation called General Purpose GPU (GPGPU) Computing. NVIDI
A vastly accelerated such efforts with the release of CUDA in 2007\, tha
t provided a much simpler interface to programmers wanting to use the GP
U for general computation. Today\, GPUs are being used to accelerate so
me of the most powerful supercomputers in the world (see top500.org).
In this talk I'll describe the ideas behind this very different kind of
computing\, show some simple CUDA examples\, and mention the open source
alternative to CUDA (OpenCL). I'll give a bit more detail on our newly
acquired NVIDIA K20\, and briefly outline my GP-GPU Computing course fo

Android device to a MySQL database. The technique used is adaptable to a

ss remote databases\, instead it uses SQLLite\, a flat file system. &#13
